- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2014I have just finished the series - written thus far - and am desolated at the thought that there are no more yet; I think 'Desperate Love of a Lord' is due in mid-October but I don't know whether it is a novel or novella; it is not direct family, though. This book is wonderful - as others have said, deeper and darker than the previous books, although for tugging at the heart strings 'Lost Love of a Soldier' is out on its own.
I think what makes this such a good story is that while we see a damaged young man trying to come to terms with his own inadequacies, one can actually see in his upbringing much of the shape of English royalty, although it has changed rapidly with the younger generation. What I also liked is that, despite his best intentions, John cannot let go, and so instead of an easy, love-conquers-all resolution, it takes right until the end of the book for him to deal with his demons, and I still felt that he would never be a perfectly normal man, except with his own family, and probably one couldn't expect that, given his position in society. There were so many instances when the author could have taken the easy route and made John and Katherine become united against the outside world - instead it was John who kept pulling back behind his icy persona, shutting everyone, including his wife, out, while Katherine forged on, finding her own way through. In so many stories, once the villain has made his final move, the couple become dewy-eyed and any contentious issues are instantly resolved. Not so in this story, and makes it the excellent read it is. There are parts that make very uncomfortable reading during John's early relationship with Katherine and his treatment of her although the reader understands why he is like he is.
Jane Lark, if you read reviews, please never kill Edward off, even is he has to hang around as a benevolent ghost! He is just the most wonderful man and in every book where he appears, he just gets better and better. Another believable fact is the vast number of children each couple has - also very authentic for that time. I am so hoping for more in this series - each story has been quite different from the previous one, which unfortunately is not so common with other authors of this genre; many 'family' sagas tend to fall into a formulaic pattern; not so Jane Lark!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2021This is a very well written and complex book with very unusual characters and a different kind of plot. It also carried from the first book which gave the impression of HEA but that was not quite right
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2020It's true! I usually loathe second generation characters. Only Sara Donati seemed to get it right. Pamela Belle didn't and neither did Diana Gabaldi, but Jane Lark has.
John, the new Duke of Pembroke we find originally in the first of this saga as a boy used by his mother's protector and trained by his mother's father. A puppet on both counts. This takes its toll on the adult John.
A moving account of the detrimental effects of a unloved childhood on the bigger child. How secrets are destructive and how falsehoods prevent true happiness.
Thank goodness for Katherine, who really owes nothing to anyone. Mistreated and overlooked, but still keeps giving- mostly to the young man who has held her heart for years.
Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Romantic!
This is the best book I have read in a really long time, and I read books all the time! This is the type of book you don't want to finish. I kept looking at my percentage on my kindle and willing it to stay at 50%, and 75%, and 90%! I never wanted this story to end. I loved the characters! You feel as if you are in the book and I MIGHT have fallen for John a little bit! I like books that focus on the love story. I am not one for all the drama that some writers try to fill the pages with. Just give me the romance and Jane Lark did! Page after page! I am excited to have found a new author to read. Jane Lark, I want to be your new best friend!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Scandalous
John was raised solely by his cold heartless Grandfather until the age of 10. His Grandfather told him his Mother was dead.
AS children Katherine and her brother Phillip son and Daughter of a Squire were friends with John. She has loved John from afar for years.
Katherine was adopted but always knew she was the illegitimate daughter of a milk maid.
When Johns Grandfather dies and John assumes his role as Duke, he becomes s cold calculating man simular to his grandfather. He never knew why he was left with his Grandfather who was a cruel man or why his Mother never came for him. When she finally did she had remarried and shortly after began having a family with her new husband.
There is lots of angst on Johns part, feeling he could not show weakness and was in capable of love. He wanted Katherine but he was of course a Duke and could not marry "beneath" his station.
I enjoyed this book though there was a point I was so over John's insistence on hanging onto his issues.

3.0 out of 5 stars Story wad fine but..
Story was fine; the editing was poor. Couple of times names were reversed and there were grammatical issues. I'm a nut about that and it threw me out if the story.
