- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018I love this series! When I found out Captain and Candy were getting their own book, I was so happy. Captain and Baron were tied as my favorite "secondary" characters throughout the series. I liked Candy, too. She seemed like a sweet girl. Excellent book!
CAUTION:
Spoilers ahead!
I loved Charles's interaction with his family. His family life goes to show that the grass is never greener on the other side and that every family has skeletons. Even though I hate how his father treated him, it made Charles strong and thick-skinned for boot camp. I hear grief about Charles's mother, but you have to understand, things were A LOT different back then. Women were struggling to be treated fairly (a lot more than now) and her being a military wife, she was definitely not considered equal to her husband in society. I have no doubt that Charles's father purposely kept the letters from Jacob. I didn't like that Ms. Phoenix left the two brothers' relationship open, but I expect that was done purposely.
Cleopatra (and I thought my name was bad!) was so sweet! I adored Ethan and admired his confidence. I loved that he was so down-to-earth and relatable, that he wasn't afraid of being a blue-collar working man. Cleo's mother's depression was sad and after Ethan's death, the fact that Cleo slipped into a major depressive state herself, but got herself out of it, showed her strength.
I enjoyed reading about Captain's time at boot camp. I hated Grapes at first (I dislike people who take out their anger at other people out at the world, which is also why Mary is one of my least favorite characters) but I liked his character development very much.
I also LOVED the first interaction with Mr. Gallant. I like the teacher a lot and their talk has definitely stuck with him all his life.
I hated Liege (how is his name pronounced, btw?) even before I knew his name but I especially hated him now. I hate abusers in general. What he did to Candy and Anna was inexcusable. I also gained newfound respect for Headmaster Coen. I didn't care for him much during Brie's training because I thought he was too critical of Brie. Although nowhere near as nitpicky as Ms. Clark, it always felt like he was taking out his frustrations with Sir out on Brie. But the kindness he showed to Candy made me love him. Not just for doing the right thing but being there when she needed him. The fact that he stopped the abuse as soon as she entered the training center doors spoke volumes to me. I would've loved to have been a fly on his wall during his "discussion" with Liege. And Baron! Oh, Baron. I love him. He really knows how to cherish a submissive. He is the epitome of safety and protection. Plus, Rachael being a badass was awesome! She is one of the most underplayed and underrated characters in the series.
We don't learn much more about what caused Captain's injuries. I cried so hard when I read that he was the only survivor. There's obviously a lot more that happened to him (rescued?) than just the wounds. The fact that he survived something that horrifying, plus losing Grapes (not said but implied) made me weep for him. Although he is a fictional character, there are many just like him who ARE real. It also made his time in Russia that much more heartbreaking. I'm crying now thinking about what was going on in his head while Faelan was being hurt.
I liked seeing Mr. Gallant and Ena again. It was Ena's kindness that opened up Captain's heart. He found acceptance at The Haven, which was something he desperately needed.
I think my favorite part of the book was learning that Brie was Captain's first true submissive. The way it went about from Brie's perspective, it seemed like Captain was an experienced Dom, but the fact that he really wasn't made their date a million times more special. Their interaction was magical. I think Brie was the one who put Captain in a place where he could be a good Dom to Candy.
I loved Captain and Candy's date. So perfect for them both.
I refuse to call the end of the book the ending because it's not. We all know what happens but not the deets. I didn't like it but seeing Captain's love for Candy broke my heart. He's such a wonderful, caring, kind man, that he always puts her needs before his. He needs to get his head together again because Candy deserves his love as much as he deserves hers. I personally can't wait to see how it happens.
I read the first 17 books in the series in one weekend (and with my husband home one of those days!) and Safe Haven was as perfect as the others. I said at the beginning that Baron and Captain were tied as my favorite secondary characters. After reading this, Captain is my favorite. I love Baron but Captain... yeah, he's top.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018This is a tough book for me to review. I'd received an ARC of this but I also received the book when it was released yesterday. I was taken a little bit by surprise by the story arc and the tone of the first 50%, or more, of the book. That portion dealt with what had gone on before - the history of both Captain and Candy, and how they ended up in the same place at the same time. Most of Red's books deal with present time, with flashbacks to account for the past. This one started in the past, and brought us through to present day for both the Captain and his love, Candy.
We met Candy and the Captain in previous books in the Brie series, beginning with the Captain "purchasing" Brie from an auction at the Submissive Training Center, as well as Brie's interaction with Candy on the bus, and with Captain helping in the rescue of Rystar from his captors. They both piqued our interest and I'm so glad they have their own books and their love. Unfortunately, the love between them isn't so easy as it would appear. Captain lives with the horrid memories of war and while he doesn't have regrets, the things that have happened to him make him believe that he isn't the one for Candy. And Candy, who has lived through tragedy and abuse, believes just the opposite and knows that Captain is her mate.
I wasn't used to the book being more history than present tense, but as I read, I realized that was exactly why this story was in two parts. This book would have been HUGE had Red Phoenix told the tale in one book. In a way, because I'm a selfish reader and want the whole story in front of me, I wish it WERE in one book. BUT, not only does the idea of two books build suspense, it also appeals to me in terms of keeping my interest level high. And I enjoyed their story in a way that is completely different from the enjoyment I gained from the other books in the Brie series. This book tugged at my heart strings in a way the other books didn't do. Yes, I cried with Sir, Brie, and others in the previous books, but in this book, I found myself pulling for Captain from the very beginning - with his father, boot camp, and on. It was the same with Candy. Because of the way Red wrote the book, I read Candy's history as it happened, and not through flashbacks as in other books. That made her pain all that more real and the emotions as I read this were just as real.
Had Red Phoenix asked me (like she's going to take my advice, lol), I would have told her that dividing a story of two people up into two parts might be a mistake. I would have been wrong. Very wrong. Kudos to Red for changing it up in a way that brought out big, bright emotions (and not just the positive ones) in a way that the reader could not miss them. I'm giving this five stars because it was a well written, heart-tugging story about the beginning and middle of love. Both Captain and Candy learned hard lessons in the book and those lessons brought them together. While there was little BDSM in the book, the ideals of the lifestyle were there. I would recommend this book to any reader of Red Phoenix. This book, amongst all the others, stands out as different, engaging, and oh so very enjoyable!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018Safe Haven is beautiful proof that “love has no limits.” It’s a story of loss, grief, determination, turmoil, love, joy, and of course, since it’s a Red Phoenix novel, off-the-charts hotness! Whew! It now ties with the previous book as my favorite!
Captain is a man that I have grown to love. He already had my affection and gratitude in previous books, but he cemented my love and appreciation for him in this one. Part of my heart aches for him. Okay, let’s be honest, half of it hurts for him and all he had to endure and fight through. The other half? It hurts for Candy.
Candy…I loved her simply because she and I had something in common when we met her in previous books. But now? She inspires me. She showed what perseverance looked like in the midst of devastating grief, terror, and the unknown. Her courage is one that can’t be ignored and that’s just one of the many things I adore about her.
Safe Haven shows the purity of love without limits, and it served to prove that opening your heart and mind can lead to incredible beauty and joy. Captain’s determination and strength, mental, emotional, and physical strength, made me cheer him on as well as hug him in gratitude! Candy’s perseverance, courage, sweetness, love, and joy made me want to have her as my best friend! I felt so much and couldn’t help but relate to so many parts. Red Phoenix provides such an amazing world and I cannot wait for the next book

5.0 out of 5 stars The surprised story of captain and candy excellent
I have read and reread each book in this series. I love them so sexy and a great stories to make you love and feel for all the characters. I was delighted to read about candy and captain. It is nice to read about all the different characters in this series. I was surprised Red chose these two but now I understand she made them so real. This book gives you more background in Bries interaction with these two. Can not wait till August to read the next book to see what is going to happen next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional and beautifully written love story
Another amazing book from author Red Phoenix. Very emotional heartfelt story which is told from both points. Captain as a young man making decisions that his father disagrees with leading him to turn his back on his son. Captain goes through a very traumatic situation which leads him to believe he will always be alone, until he joins the bdsm community. Candy finds herself in a perilous situation with no way out until she receives a helping hand from a stranger in the form of a card. A card which introduces her to the submissive training center. This is where their paths cross, and for each of them begins a new journey.
