Pretty Yende, a rising star soprano with a modern fairy-tale story releases her debut album A Journey. Born in a remote town in South Africa, Yende was first introduced to opera music at the age of sixteen when hearing the Flower Duet from Delibes opera Lakmé in a British Airways commercial. At that moment she decided to become an opera singer. Yende rose to the top of the opera world with unparalleled speed, with competition successes and engagements at the world s foremost opera houses. She was the first artist in history to win first prize in every category of the International Belvedere Competition in 2009 and also won first prize in every category at Plácido Domingo s Operalia competition in 2011. Yende had her debut at La Scala in Milan in 2010 and was accepted into their prestigious young artist s program. But her international breakthrough came at the Metropolitan Opera in 2013 when Yende replaced Nino Machaidze in Rossini s Le Comte Ory, stepping in at a month s notice opposite star tenor Juan Diego Flórez and gained rapturous international acclaim. A Journey is a particularly joyful labor of love for Yende as each track on the album celebrates a milestone in her extraordinary musical journey and rise to the top of the opera world.

    Saw her in the Palais Garnier Paris production of "La Traviata". She was jaw-dropping!! It was a modern staging and her voice was absolutely flawless. She is also extremely beautiful. We enjoyed it thoroughly! If you like opera, seek her out as she will be a huge star for years to come. The Garnier had to bring up the house lights to stop the standing ovations for her; they just keep cheering!

    This is a stunning CD. Here tone and technique singing these very difficult arias, including very high coloratura, are remarkable. No wonder Placido Domingo raves about her! This one CD explains her meteoric rise as a world class soprano. The people of the little town of Piet Retief, as well as her teachers at the University of Cape Town, should feel very proud of what they nurtured.

    A supreme Prima Donna she may be, but at times there is work to be done. Her voice is exciting and magical at times, particularly the aria from le Comte Ory, but I expect my heart to swell in a few of these arias, such as "Dieu, quell frissons court pour mes veines...", and it just didn't. I feel for a first CD, it is good, but I've heard other video recordings where she nailed "O eendetemi la speme..." and this one didn't capture that same brilliance. Nevertheless, there are great moments here and I'm glad she is growing in popularity.
