- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2013The Breakers Series by Edward W. Robertson is an absolutely captivating, original, character-filled, compelling post-apocalyptic tale. The world building is detailed, so believable as to be completely transparent and absorbing. The logic of what has happened to end the world (a plague) fits together nicely, with no wrong steps or weird missing facts. It is chillingly realistic.
Then, each book in the series introduces a new set of characters and follows them as they navigate through the apocalyptic world. Mr Robertson has a knack for showing his characters as deeply flawed people, but leading the reader to come to understand and respect (if not like) them -- even the most socially retarded and selfish ones. Each book concentrates upon several of these characters, but is filled with interesting secondary characters who are also well drawn out and multi-dimensional. And, in what I considered a bonus gift, characters from the earlier novels appear or are referenced in later books. This constant weaving together threads from different novels reinforces the overall story (of a world collapsed, with survivors fighting for their lives) and somehow makes it more believable and real.
I hope that Mr. Robertson will continue writing these books forever and ever. If you haven't discovered this series yet you are in for a treat. Start at the beginning so you can experience the complete story fully. Then join me in asking for more books in the series!
This book, Outcome, is a short story in the Breaks world, and chronologically fits in somewhere in the first two books. It introduces us to Ellie, an agent at the time of the apocalypse, who realizes early on that the plague is unstoppable and decides to try to rescue her ex-fiance before he gets infected. Excellent.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2013After configuring number and looking over statistics, Ellie Colson knows that she needs to get to New York before the outcome of the disease. A disease called Panhandler which makes people cough up the blood until they die and will take over the world in short time.
Getting to New York was supposed to be fast since all she needed to do is find her ex-fiance Chip and his daughter Dee and bring them to safety. But after finding out that Dee is missing, they have to find her before they could catch the disease.
I love when authors have novellas before series to have a short introduction of what is going to happen. It’s the right amount of story to capture attention, set the mood, and figure out if I enjoy the writing. Which, I have to admit, I absolutely loved!! The story was consistent and always captured my attention. I cannot wait to start Breakers which is the first book in this series.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2016I've read the complete series twice. Robertson is very good at writing stories that hold the readers attention. His books are usually written with two stories running concurrently; at a critical point in the story, he breaks off and picks up the other story at a critical point. At first, this bothered me, but I soon realized that these breaks in the story line allowed me to mark my place and put the book down. The story of Ellie Colson, in "Reapers" (Book 4 of the series) is one of my favorite stories & characters in the series. "Outcome" is the prequel to the series, explaining the onset of the plague that almost wipes out humanity, and explaining how Ellie, a federal agent of sorts, came to be farming wheat and baking bread near Lake Placid with a "daughter" who wasn't actually related to her. The other stories in the Breakers series tend to center around the conflict with the aliens who had planted the plague in the first place; "Reapers" is a more conventional story of a woman's determination to protect her family and survive in a post-apocalyptic world. "Outcome" gives us some insight into the person of Ellie Colson; her role with a federal agency apparently tasked with tracking such things as plague outbreaks, and her decisive action to protect someone she cares about. Through this novella, we get some insight into the beginning of the plague and the unsuccessful attempts of the government to control it. As in all his books, "Outcome" is fast-paced, well written, and a most-satisfying read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2013This short story was scary to read, to tell you the truth. The world is going to end, but not by a meteor hitting Earth, or nuclear bomb going off, or zombies... Nope. This is a virus, and it's spreading fast. This short story gave me goose bumps because it shows the ugly side of humanity (or lack thereof) when the crisis hits. Ellie wants to protect her ex-fiance, but several times, she is close to ditching him because he needs to find his step-daughter.
What scared me the most were the things Ellie and Chips stumbled over when trying to locate Dee. They were disturbing, my heart tore at the things that the author described. It was brilliantly written, scared the crap out of me, saddened me, tore at my heart and the ending was...
This short story was enough to show me exactly how good a writer Mr. Robertson is, and I downloaded the first book in the Breakers series; Breakers.
