Editorial Reviews
MOVING IN STEREO: THE BEST OF THE CARS is a collection produced by the band, with all surviving members contributing to song selection. Ric Ocasek also supervised digital remastering of all the audio with Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound. The collection features the band's big hits along with a rare, single mix for "I'm Not The One," as well as a live version of "Everything You Say," and a new mix by producer Philippe Zdar of "Sad Song," a track from the band's last album, 2011's Move Like This.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2020This is the final Cars compilation, and can be seen as a revision of their 1985 multiplatinum "Greatest Hits" album. First the bad news: two songs from Greatest Hits aren't here: Magic and Good Times Roll. I don't personally care for Good Times Roll, and while Magic is certainly catchy I don't really miss it here (I happen to love the Heartbeat City album so if I want to hear Magic I'll just listen to that--I can't really imagine someone who loves Magic but not the rest of that record). In exchange for those two missing songs you get Don't Tell Me No, Candy-O, You're All I've Got Tonight, Moving In Stereo, Dangerous Type, Sad Song (Remix), and Everything You Say (Live). Dangerous Type is my favorite Cars song, and honestly I think I prefer all of these other songs to Magic--which is just to say they are all good. I am so happy this contains Tonight She Comes which was only released on Greatest Hits. The only song I *really* miss here is You Are The Girl--perhaps Ric's reflection on the band breaking up at the time of that single/video made the memory too unpleasant to include it. Or maybe it was unlucky because it was the Cars' 13th and final Top 40 hit (and Casey Kasem would never introduce another Cars song on his show). Maybe it was the death knell to the 80s. Anyway I love that song if only because the was the first video I remember seeing on MTV when it aired and I thought they were so goofy and awesome.
The art is great and non-problematic. Unlike some of the folks at Steve Hoffman forums, I don't think Ric messed up the remastering here, while there might be a bit less DR I think things sound clearer than the originals. Finally it is clear lot of care went into arranging the songs on the vinyl so that there are four distinct sonic experiences across the two discs, and even before receiving the vinyl package I know I'll be listening to them a lot over the rest of my life.
UPDATE: After listening to this compilation many times I will concede that "Everything You Say (Live)" is a much better song than 'You Are The Girl', getting an entirely new recording is special, and that snapshot of the live band performing before their breakup and Orr's death is just lovely. Ben completely invokes Elvis and owns his performance, and the recording is top notch. I can't imagine a better homage from Ric to Ben than in including this song.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2024Heavy pressed 180 gram double record set. Record jacket is high quality, everything to like. All of the best Cars songs - sounds amazing. So much better than streaming.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2024I really miss Ben I used to see him all the time at the Paridise in Boston where I first saw them live and they would also hang out there when other bands were playing ,and listening to to the song Drive really hurts me bad but I love that song and I also miss Ben.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album
Great mix of tracks that were actually compiled by Ric Ocasek and the other members of the Cars, but there are a few missing, including 'Magic'. Why this track was overlooked baffles me - it was huge back in the day. You really couldn't turn on your TV or the radio without hearing this song a billion times a day. Nevertheless, it is a great album - older and newer fans will love it. I guarantee it!
One thing I don't like is the packaging on this - it's actually pretty horrible and not practical at all. The cardboard sleeves are very tight, making it nearly impossible to get the CD or booklet out. Whoever came up with this bright idea clearly didn't use their brain. Really awful design choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars 80 Forever

5.0 out of 5 stars Voyage of Rediscovery
Now, I'll start by saying I'm not a massive Cars fan or obsessive or anything. Back in the late 70s I used to sneak into my elder brothers bedroom to play his records. He was into Thin Lizzy, Boston and loads of similar bands whereas I was a Buzzcocks kid. Anyway, I used to sneak in there when he wasn't around mainly to play his War of the Worlds album, which I loved (still do). One day he came in with something I'd not heard before, it was the first Cars album. I played it and loved it. Particularly "My Best Friend's Girl". I went out and bought the single, which made him a little suspicious as it wasn't my usual fare, but I got away with it.
That was in 1978 when I was 14. I've never bought another record by Cars until now when I decided to relive my youth and buy this best of on vinyl. I'm so pleased I did. Yes, there's a lot I've heard here before, the aforementioned "Best Friend's Girl", "Just What I Needed", "Let's Go" and obviously "Drive", but there's so much more that I hadn't heard of before and it's been a bit of a revelation. The album has been on repeat much to the annoyance of my wife and son for the last couple of days. I might even invest in the Original album series boxset now, but we'll see.
I must mention the packaging for the album. It really is superb. So well designed and eyecatching. The cover alone is worth the purchase price and the pressing is superb, not a pop, hiss or crackle anywhere. It's a gatefold, the 180gm records are housed in plain white polylined sleeves (always a nice touch) plus you get inner picture bags too. Oh, and the obligatory download card.
It's been great rediscovering this superb music and I maybe late to the party by 39 years but I could be becoming a Cars fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars 果たしてどちらがBESTか?
「Just What I Needed」「Since You're Gone」と続く1、2目は奇しくも「Greatest Hits」と全く同じ。
