4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

She is a winged warrior of the heavens. He is a doomed Elven King.

Khyrial the Zyrane Stormrider, disgraced Ayraelar warrior, has one mission – to keep King Vaylar alive. Her honour and return to her home above the Boreal Tempest depend upon success, for her dead father swore an oath she must keep at all costs

‘Evil knows how to bide its time. It is slow, as the turning of our worlds, and its memory is very long indeed.’

Powerful enemies plot a deadly end the Elven King’s reign. His fated attraction to the exotic bodyguard must be expunged at once. Khyrial will give her own wings to keep Vaylar alive. An elite warrior from birth, she is formidable, fierce and fearless, yet as the stakes rise, so do her forbidden feelings for the handsome Elven royal.

Vaylar is the King of Shalaemi, his sap rooted in the magical Elven forests, besieged by destructive Wyrms. His duty is to his realm. Khyrial is his sworn servant, an aerial huntress of storm and lightning. To a warrior of the heavenly realms, dishonour means death.

Catapulted into the lost realm of the Dragons, Khyrial and the King must make a terrible choice. One choice that will change everything.

Elf and Ayraelar. Man and woman. Never predictable, the storms of romance.

What a ride! This was the best story I’ve read in a long time! There was a lot going on besides the romance. The romance was a slow burn and clean. There were some innuendoes, so it wouldn’t be appropriate for the younger YA reader. The characters were all fleshed out. You learned right along with the main female character, Khyrial. I’m glad this was a stand alone story, but wouldn’t mind some more stories in this universe featuring some of the other characters and realms. Kudos to Mr. Secchia!!

This is a well-written story that took many twists and turns as Khyrial travels a road of self-discovery. It shows how our perceptions of others are influenced by upbringing, society norms, and our perceptions of ourselves. The story has action, intrigue, friendship, camaraderie, and romantic love woven into a well-paced plot.

I have yet to read a Marc Secchia novel that hasn’t made me sob (in the best possible way), and I am looking forward to many more tears in the future.

I couldn't put this book down. I was crying and laughing and rejoicing in turn. Another amazing masterful tale by Marc Secchia.

Khyrial has been sent by the Lords of Ayrelar to protect Prince Vaylar and make sure he became King Vaylar and was not assassinated. His father died under mysterious circumstances a month earlier and Khyrial is sent to protect the Prince and to make sure he becomes King. She is also sent to find out information about Wyrms that have been seen in the Middle Realm.

The Prince wants to know why she is here. She tells him about the pact her father made with his father. He then becomes King and Khyrial becomes his Champion. This way she stays close to the King and can protect him.

In this story you will meet good step-sisters, lazy knights, Magis, an evil fiancée, Pegasi, wyrms, dragons, evil spirits and people from the Lower Realm and Upper Realm. The amazing storyteller, your author, Marc Secchia, has taken the characters and has given us another great story.

Khryial has an impossible assignment: protect the hapless young elven prince from seemingly endless attempts to kill him. But Prince Vaylor is not what she expected. He’s clever, fearless, committed to his people, and soon smitten with Khyrial.

There is abundant action, danger, and plot twists. The world-building is fun, with tree-dwelling elves, winged people, deadly wyrms, humans, proud pegasi, and unique dragons with colorful, living flames in crystalline bodies. As always, I enjoy the descriptions. Khyrial has huge wings to soar in “the wide empty spaces of the sky’s vault, sporting in clouds and chasing rainbows – and, perhaps, dancing amongst thunderheads.” She’s a new favorite character. “Khyrial and the King” is a great, much needed escape. Five stars!

Loved how the story is all tied up in one book, and what a story. Wonderfully written. Great characters. Interesting plot whose resolution is unexpected. Well worth my time reading it.
