Product description
Khatia Buniatishvili – Motherland
Her most intimate album including solo works from Bach to Pärt
Following the success of her Chopin album on Sony Classical, Khatia Buniatishvili now reveals a new, highly personal side on her album ‘Motherland’.
The CD is an intimate quest encompassing solo piano works from Bach to Pärt and from Brahms to Kancheli, in which the themes of longing for home, the merriment of a folk dance and the eternal cycle of growth and decay are apparent. Spanning a broad stylistic and historical range, the album celebrates the works that have accompanied Khatia Buniatschvili’s personal path in life, including pieces from her Georgian homeland. Motherland juxtaposes the happy lightness of a ‘Slavonic Dance’ by Dvorak and the melancholy of Grieg’s lyrical ‘Homesickness’, and contrasts the elegant gaiety of Mendelssohn’s ‘Song without Words’ (op. 67/2) with the graceful introspection of Liszt’s ‘Lullaby’. Classics of the Romantic piano repertoire such as Chopin’s Étude in C-sharp minor (op. 25/7) and Brahms ‘Intermezzo’ (op. 117/2) are embedded between Bach’s cantata ‘Sheep May Safely Graze’ and Arvo Pärt’s musical dedication ‘For Alina’.
About Khatia Buniatishvili
Khatia Buniatishvili has been described by The Independent as “the young Georgian firebrand”. At the age of only 26 years, this Tblisi-born pianist has already achieved an exceptional maturity of interpretation and a distinctive artistic approach that make her playing unmistakable. Khatia’s warm, sometimes sorrowful playing may reflect a close proximity to Georgian folk-music, which, she attests, has greatly influenced her musicality. Critics emphasize that her playing has an aura of elegant solitude and even melancholy, which she does not feel to be a negative attribute. “The piano is the blackest instrument,” she says, a “symbol of musical solitude… I have to be psychologically strong and forget the hall if I want to share it with the audience.” Khatia Buniatishvili speaks five languages and lives in Paris.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2018Loving this. Perfect for a quiet evening with a good book and a glass of something. The breadth of genres means it does not tire the listener, and the playing is delightful and exquisite. One has heard most of these pieces before, and yet they do seem fresh, original, and played just for you. Beautiful.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 November 2015It is a lovely CD which you can listen to over and over again. All the tracks are lovely melodies and not intrusive - ideal as background music as well as turned up to enjoy. Khatia obviously loves the music she is playing and her heart is in it. I would rate it one my best piano CD's and I have many.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 2018Although a cd with many different styles it makes sense, I think, from the artist point if view when she tries to convey a mood or feeling. The only but would be that the sound of the pedal is too noticeable, but that's my taste.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2019Excellent - I can just sit back and relax while the music plays on
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 May 2015Wonderful playing, sound and a joy to listen to. A rare glimpse into a real artistic interpretation which offers something different.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 October 2014They say 'Never judge a CD by it's cover'. Well, this is definitely and exception.
Probably the best classical release this year.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2016NOTHING WRONG WITH THE MUSIC WHICH IS EXCELLENT.
ITS THAT THE RECORDING HAS A STRANGE BACKGROUND NOISE, WHICH RENDERS THIS UNLISTENABLE ON HEADPHONES.
AT FIRST I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE CD, BUT THE NOISE IS ALSO ON THE MP3 DOWNLOAD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Antologia di vari Autori

5.0 out of 5 stars Un tesorito

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music
This CD album - as other reviewers said - the first few tracks have lower output level, same as what I heard from this CD, so I turned up the volume, but the dynamics of these tracks was too good that I had to turned down the volume, then I remembered somewhere I read few years ago that the album was recorded in a church (SONY used the same church as DG used) and the recording was very good (probably the "airy" from the recording), so the audio equipment have to be good enough to appreciate the good recording. Too bad my system is only mid-fi, but I really enjoy the music - Khatia's performance was excellent and you can feel her emotion and energy when she played. This is an awesome CD album, just buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attachant

5.0 out of 5 stars Extra beautiful. Marvelous artistry in excellent sound.
The only horrible review this release has gotten here pertains to the sound. I have to disagree. The sound is amazingly intimate and every note is there to be cherished. Now, as a showcase of this pianist's artistry, this is an excellent collection. If you saw KB play live (and there is plenty on YouTube) you would probably become a fan. In fact, I think it is now great times for women pianists; and it is not only their mesmerizing beauty but their technique and sensitivity. Lovely to look at, and hear... and listen, as here.
There is lots of sensitive playing here, some will probably think it is too much of a good thing, but again, this goes with the performance chops of this excellent pianist. Her playing is extra-sensitive and delicate when called for, even though she seems to indulge a bit. At the end, I happen to like that. And a lot has to do with how the pieces flow: the program.
As a CD collector for decades I learned to avoid recitals like this under the (pre)-judgment of commercialism. But here I made an exception, as the program looked varied and it touched on rare pieces. The inclusion of Kancheli, Ligeti and Part is a plus. Otherwise, you go through centuries of style and emotion, from Bach to Georgian folk. Ultimately, it delivers a beautiful evening of solo piano by the fireside, and a glass of good wine to enjoy.
