Editorial Reviews

Preservation Hall Jazz Band and its music continue to evolve as they embrace tradition and history while inspiring a new generation. Preservation Hall Jazz Band and My Morning Jacket first met a few years ago and also performed together on tour and in New Orleans. As their support for each other has grown, Jim James (My Morning Jacket) decided to take on the role as co-producer with Ben Jaffe on what is the first release of original music from Preservation Hall Jazz Band. With songs co-written with Dan Wilson, Chris Stapleton and the legendary Paul Williams, these new recordings have a fresh approach but still capture the classic feel of what has kept Preservation Hall Jazz Band relevant over the past 50 years.

Okay, for full disclosure, I am a PresHall fanatic. If they perform within 300 miles of my house, I find a way to go see them. I try to get down to NOLA at least twice a year JUST FOR THEM. And now to the critique... Some folks may have been expecting more Dixieland style jazz, or a more traditional form of New Orleans jazz and this may disappoint them. It didn't disappoint me in the least though. I love those styles of jazz but I also think that while the past must be preserved, jazz needs to grow and change just like any other living thing and yes, jazz is alive! These guys (and Ms. Watanabe, who can rock a piano down on St. Peter St!) are ensuring that jazz stays alive. The eponymous song blew me away when I heard it for the first time. "Dear Lord" showcases just how charismatic Ronell is as a showman and if you've never seen him perform live with PresHall you are missing a wonderful thing. "Rattlin' Bones" is for all those who want the old stuff and is a fantastic piece showcasing Joe Lastie. "Yellow Moon" and "August Nights" make me want to do some slow, sultry dance with someone. And Emmalena's Lullaby conjures images of Morticia and Gomez Addams doing some dangerous tango. This album is one of my faves and Ben, Charlie, Clint, Joe, Ronell, Freddie and all the others of PresHall did an outstanding job! Definitely recommend to anyone who loves NOLA and/or Jazz, but honestly how can you love NOLA and not love Jazz?

I first heard the PHJB back in the mid-60's, when I lived a few blocks from the place, and when many of the musicians were the original New Orleans jazzmen, contemporaries of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and other legends. They could still bring it, and it was a thrill just to be in the same room with them. Over the years, as the originals passed on and younger NOLA musicians stepped in, the band adhered to its high standards and superb musicianship (and Preservation Hall adhered to its garage-like premises)but there's only so many albums you can listen to of essentially reiterations of the original canon, no matter how proficient it is.

This album steps off in a new direction. These are all newly-composed songs -- the last thing one might expect from this venerable institution. But it is a step, not a broad jump. What they've done is render songs that you've never heard, but that fit seamlessly into the New Orleans tradition.Any of these could have been on a 1940's playlist, if they'd existed then.

I'll leave to others the critique of the individual pieces, and just say that this record shows that you can teach old dogs some new tricks, and then listen to them peel the paint off the walls with their dexterity, devotion, and profound knowledge of this marvelous tradition.

Since a trip to New Orleans in 1979 when I saw the Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Sweet Emma Barrett and the Humphrey brothers, I've been a fan of their music. The problem I now have is trying to add something new to the reviews already posted here, which include just about everything I would include in a review of their new CD, "That's It!" So, all I can say is this: when I first heard this CD while driving home from work, I was blown away! What a way to start a new generation and trend for this band playing traditional New Orleans jazz. This band NEEDS to get some kind of award for this CD. I hope they read these reviews so they can confidently continue playing this terrific variety of old and new. It's fresh, exciting, and skillfully performed. Thank you PHJB.

If you are a fan of New Orleans music, get this CD. It's much better than what you hear at the Preservation Hall. That is geared to the tourist. This is MUSIC! Love it.

Want to feel the vibe of New Orleans? This album captures it. This recording was fifty years in the making, as it is the first-ever release of all original material. Traditional feeling, yet new and cutting edge material brings the vibe to life. That's It! The title track makes me jump up and dance. That's It! is a perfect 5 out of 5.

I like this CD but it is a long way from my favorite. Just does not measure up to the other CD`s of PH Jazz Band that I have. Rattlin Bones is great and, for me, saves this CD. However, this rating of just average does not reflect on the PH Jazz Band, only on the selection of music by someone. As for the Band, they are simply wonderful and for that reason you need to own this CD if you love jazz.

I happen to live a few blocks from Preservation Hall but I am embarrassed to admit I have never actually been there. After seeing the band perform the title song on the Jimmy Kimmel show, I knew I had to have this record. Their energy is palpable on that track as they inject life into a classic sound. The album is full of great musicianship and energy but there is nothing especially groundbreaking here.

You can't help but dance when you hear the band do what it does best... remind you that New Orleans is home to some of the world's finest musicians. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is an institution and a true pleasure to hear, as well as see. I have seen them, both at Preservation Hall and on the road and these gentlemen are extraordinary.

Very inspirational, fun and elegant record. Great record if you want to introduce you to the preservation hall, even though it is an original record it keeps the essence of New Orleans Jazz
