Yes, just in time for the end of summer--Jimi Hendrix!!!
I am not an unhappy camper in the slightest. Glad to be able to listen to the disc just 2 days away from the "Electric Church" special on showtime this Friday night 9/5. Anyway, i think he performs the best version of "room full of mirrors" on disc 1. I am a fan that owns the "stages" discs and have heard the atlanta performance many times -- maybe because of the remastering -- i am liking the "freedom" discs much better. Thanks to experience hendrix and legacy for releasing such a gem.
Thank you for your feedback

I sat on the fence for a while before purchasing. I'm a Hendrix fan but not a full fledged fanatic. I get so sick of that greatest guitar player in the history of the world nonsense. The man was flat out amazing and THE innovator and father of modern day electric guitar playing. Strictly speaking from a technique and skills standpoint he could be pretty sloppy sometimes so some of his live work, especially from stand point of tuning and singing in key leave something to be desired. So I don't run out and buy every vault release Experience Hendrix puts out there for the Jimi minions.. Currently I have the Winterland box set, Band of Gypsys, The extended Band of Gypsys at Fillmore East, In the West, Monterey, Miami, Berkley, Complete Woodstock ...And now THIS. I told you all that so you will know I'm cautious about Jimi's live catalog and I could tell you this: With the exception of Band of Gypsys and parts of Winterland, this is some of his strongest playing. There are a couple of points where the show hits a lull and gets a bit sloppy (Mitch in particular loses and drops the beat more than a couple of times - and listen, I'm a jazz fan and musician so I understand free, elastic playing better that most. Everyone has addressed the misfire on the Watchtower beginning but it really isn't that bad, Jimi recovers it nicely. Sometimes Mitch annd Billy fall out of tempo (as a bandleader varying tempo in a song drives me nuts)

BUT overall this is a band that showed up ready to thrill the audience. Hear My Train A'Comin' is a tour de force performance second only to Machine Gun from the original Bad of Gypsys. No kidding. That track alone is worth the cost of this set. Hear My Train has long been one of my favorites, especially the Berkley performance and he blows the roof off of the Berkley recording with this performance. It is jaw dropping stuff. I'm not sure what I think of Spanish Castle Magic, the solo is just blistering and then suddenly runs out of steam, like he had to stop and think about where to take it. The vocal on this tune is typical live Jimi where he's not necessarily sticking to the melody line... kind of like he's sick of singing it, bored. The newer material all sounds great e.g. Freedom, Room Full of Mirrors. You can tell he's more enthusiastic about his new direction and songs. This is one is a must own. A few faults but overall exciting stuff. If Band of Gypsys is five stars then this is four an a half.

If you already have the “ Stages” box set that includes this show you will most likely enjoy this because of it’s remastering which makes this show sound much better. I always thought the tone of Jim’s guitar on the Stages release sounded compressed, but with this remastering that is now gone and the tone sounds warmer and much more like it should. Getting deep down into the mix in the proper hands can do wonders and Bernie Grundman did a good job. Also reverb to Jimi’s guitar is what Stages did not have ( don’t know if it was added or originally recorded as).. Red House on Stages is 10:53 and Jimi’s guitar goes way out of tune to the point of it becoming unlistenable. However like I thought would happen , a cut and past edit job was done to omit where Jimi goes way out of tune so this version is scaled down to 8:27 omitting the 2:26 of what you probably don’t want to hear anyway even though the last few minutes dose include Jimi playing his strat out of tune. Jimi sounds like he's tearing the insides out of his guitar on Hear My Train A Comin’ a torrid , burning, hurricane blast version .. is worth the price alone and Spanish Castle Magic and Foxy Lady are probably my favorite versions.(when you hear Foxy Lady you will not believe your ears!.. yes it's that good ..be prepared, it will practically make your hairs stand on end .. If you have the dvd you already know that some of his scorching funkified solo is with his teeth!) Jimi's rhythm guitar and voicing's in between vocals on a great version of Hey Joe give a small example of his rhythm guitar genius is displayed even though you can tell that he's basically just going through the motions to a degree, having played the song hundred's of times and probably tired of playing it by now.. The Star Spangled Banner segue’s and explodes into Straight Ahead, which has now become a fully formed cohesive song as opposed to the opening jam on Berkeley 2nd set , recorded just two months earlier .So if you have Stages and like it your going to love this. If you’re a Jimi freak and were never able to get your hands on “Stages” stop what your doing now and order this, you won’t be disappointed.

About 20 years ago I bought the Stages boxed set and really enjoyed it. The Atlanta show was my favorite. Over the years I eventually traded the Stages CD set, which I came to regret. Needless to say I was delighted to see that the Atlanta Concert was coming out, and on VINYL no less, and I got ahold of it as fast as I could.

I was not disappointed! This is the same Atalanta concert I remember from the Stages box set, though apparently made better by the inclusion of some new songs. There was also some conservative and very appropriate editing done to one of the songs where Jimi's guitar sounds as if it isn't properly amplified or some other technical issue. I have not listened to Stages in years but this album has "All Along the Watchtower" and "Freedom," two GREAT songs from Jimi's later years, which were not included on Stages. The double LP set I received is on very heavy high quality vinyl that plays perfectly. Aesthetically this album and its artwork is great to look at with easy to read labeling and great choices of photos. It makes me sad that a high-quality movie recording of Atlanta was not made like there was for Woodstock because it would be great to see this live show in full color. Listening to this great album with headphones can help you imagine what it was like.

I just saw "Electric Church" the Hendrix documentary on Showtime and I knew I had to have Freedom which is the live recording of his Atlanta Pop Festival performance on July 4, 1970 a few months before his untimely death. Hendrix is in excellent form plays a number of notable solos. All around this is an excellent live recording of the late Hendrix Experience with Billy Cox and the late Mitch Mitchell. Mitchell is outstanding on drums.

Better late than never. This concert was available since it's recording in 1970. Some material was released in the 1990's on Stages. It finally shows up in 2015. Why so long for this and other live Jimi Hendrix? If you're a fan you know about this concert and it's a must for your collection. All the songs are here except for Hey Baby that was grossly out of tune. The sound is excellent and the performance is awesome. We need more of these concerts held back by Janie to be released in this fashion. Stop leaving these concerts to rot in the vault and put them out in collections like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hendrix Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 9, 2015
Here we have Jimi Hendrix Playing at the Atlanta Pop Festival on the 4th of July 1970, the 16 track double CD rocks along with a lot of his old well known tracks and a couple of tracks promoting new material, from his what was to be numbers recorded on The Cry of Love album, released just after his death.
Although not exactly new tracks, a lot have already been previously released on the Stages Box set, on the disc 'Atlanta '70' with 11 of the tracks on that disc. Five additional tracks have been added to this double album, Red House, Message to Love, All Along the Watchtower, Freedom and Hey Joe. Most of the tracks can be found on various other albums under different guises, legit and not so legit labels with varying sound quality.
The sleeve notes were written by Bill Mankin who assisted in the stage construction and was on stage when Jimi played but the notes reflect the feel of the U.S. nation at the time and tells of the troubled times of racial tension and points out with Jimi being black playing in a southern state was quite a big deal at the time. One of the few sleeve notes that make an interesting read.
This could be enjoyed by somebody new to Jimi's music but overall it is the old-timers (such as myself) and the long time fans of Jimi who will be buying this album and enjoying it. Hard to imagine that Jimi passed away 45 years ago and his music still keeps his name alive. Great to hear his music on a good album such as this, with great sound quality, one of the better albums from Experience Hendrix machine.
