Jericho's War Kindle Edition
Selected by The Sunday Times as one of the four top thrillers of the year, JERICHO'S WAR is the new paperback from 'the best thriller writer in the world' (Daily Telegraph)
In a moment of nerve-shredding suspense that will affect many thousands of lives, a handful of men and women converge on a barren stretch of Yemeni desert.
The mission is to take down a high-value player in the war against Al-Qaeda.
It is the brainchild of an old, fat fool called Jericho. In his striped cricket blazer, never without a G&T, he is a sweating figure of fun among the ex-pats across the border in Muscat.
Yet perhaps he is not quite as old, or foolish, or even fat as he appears.
Nor as harmless...
Welcome to Jericho's War: its weaponry is state-of-the-art, its brutality as timeless as the desert.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 October 2024First rate MI6 story set mainly in modern Yemen. The usual believable Seymour characters, heroes with warts and all. This story is a real page-turner and has the usual linked but parallel activities which, towards the end all come together for an excellent finish. I can't fault one word in this book; well described characters, great story and well written.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 May 2024A Seymour book is one to savor. They are slow but deep in character, rich in setting and clever in plot. Whilst it was indeed slow, I know what I was in for and persevered with around 20 sittings to read. The pace picked up in the last third and overall was enjoyable. Seymour takes us into the Yemen dessert and we feel that we are under the mesh camouflage with the sniper and spotter as we sympathise with the retiring wounded MI5 agent, on one last mission to rescue his asset who he 'turned' years ago.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 February 2025As a lot of reviewers say, this is a book that is slow to start, and thus is true, then you reach a point where you can’t read it quickly enough to find out what happens. It remains a wonderfully inspiring story of people who make mistakes, who fail or are unable to trust others, but ultimately it leaves you hoping good always defeats evil. Inspiring story that I recommend to anyone who has experienced or has friends and relatives who have been in a critical conflict situation.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 April 2018Seymour always produces a page turner , however ,the returning theme of sniper and the middle east are becoming a little predictable . The story provides the action and tension expected from Gerald albeit some parts of story become a little incredulous . If your new to Gerald Seymour this book will make a good holiday read .
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 September 2023A bit slow to start, but builds brilliantly having you hooked. Didn’t want to stop reading it. Another masterpiece from Gerald Seymour.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 December 2024The author again demonstrates his skillful handling of the characters motivations and inner turmoil You're always convinced by their decisions and actions as they flow so authentically from the insight the author allows the reader to have into their inner selves.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2021The titular Jericho appears to be an overweight, obnoxious dinosaur - someone to laugh at in in his ostentatious cricket blazer, drink in hand. But perhaps Jericho is more than he seems...
A cast of characters includes a drone crew in the US, an ex-army sniper team, an archaeologist, terrorists in Yemen and an agent who has been there and done it. The team have a target, a member of Al-Qaeda, and if they fail hundreds of lives are at stake.
Overall, this is an excellent story. I have one or two of Seymour's books years ago and will be seeking out some more. The characters are well drawn, they have lives, foibles, hopes and dreams. The desert, and the terror of being a spy - the constant threat of the tap on the shoulder, soon to be followed by much worse, are shared. It is quite long, and in some cases a bit repetitive, but it draws you in, and you will always want to read the next few pages.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2018Every year I look forward to reading the latest Gerald Seymour on my annual holiday.
After the incredulity of parts of "No Mortal Thing", Mr Seymour is back on form with this one, an up-to-date tale of Secret Service (UK, not US) and various agents against Middle East terrorists. Once again the characters are detailed, often flawed, personalities that you can either root for or despise as you wish.
There is good plot development and the latter part of the book has some edge of the seat moments, along with a nice twist.
One feature of Gerald Seymour's books I particularly enjoy is when there are brief appearances by characters from previous novels, which adds an air of continuity in the fictional-but-close-to-the-real- world he has created. Furthermore, as the books are usually set contemporaneously, the chronology should make sense, to those of us fans who have enjoyed all his works.
However, therein lie one of the glitches which, although very minor, will irritate if you are familiar with one of his previous books, "Holding The Zero". This novel was written and set in 2000, making one of the protagonists aged early to mid 30s (he recalls being in his final year of school in 1983). He makes a brief appearance in this latest book but is described as elderly, yet aged at most 52!
As I say, a minor glitch, but one where you read it, remember the previous book and think, hang on, doesn't quite make sense.
Another glitch is I am afraid either down to poor editing or over-reliance on autocorrect. On several occasions Stickledown range is referred to either correctly or as Stickleback. Again, this is very minor and, had it been referred to as Stickleback throughout, would not be an issue, but with Mr Seymour's renowned attention to detail and realistic plots, this lets the book down ever so slightly.
However these are nit-picking details which in no way detract from the plot, but, having been a fan of Mr Seymour's work for over 25 years, I noticed them, but am already looking forward to next year's holiday and "A Damned Serious Business".

5.0 out of 5 stars unbelievably strong
I read a lot and often bump into true gems. And sometimes a book goes beyond that. This is one of those.
Three, perhaps more storylines running through each other, creating high tensed gritty platforms for events. And what a build up of tension, anxiety, desperation.
Hat off!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - even for fans
What could have been a taut thriller is destroyed by unnecessary side plots and even repeat of the same events.
Further there is a sense of déjà vu as the plot resembles his much more slicker At Close Quarters - basically a sniper team out to get a High Value Target. Cromer is set in Bekaa valley while this is set in Yemen.
At 650 pages it is too verbose and needs some serious editing.
As a fan , I am disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent thriller from Gerald Seymour.
Another great book from Seymour. A long, gripping story with many interesting characters in dangerous situations. All the half dozen leading characters are fully fleshed out and the lesser characters are also well covered. An excellent read from start to finish, with a great ending. Couldn't wait to see what would happen in the end, but also wanted the book to go on forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the ground attempt to assassinate terrorists by recruits and misfits
This is the best of Gerald Seymour's books. It has fascinating characters, their interaction and the ambiance of rear tornYemen. I found the characters including misfits, and volunteers believable including their rivalries, their backgrounds and their ultimate fate. The horrors of fighting a war on terror in which no side comes out untarnished is vividly portrayed. The contrast between the Yemen of the past and its present chaos and destruction is brought to light by the archeology dig and finding treasures of the past in this now forsaken land. Although the plot is the on the ground attempt to assassinate terrorist leaders, the real focus is on the characters on both sides.
