- D'vorah Lansky, M.Ed., and bestselling author, BookMarketingMadeEasy.com
"This might sound like hyperbole, but after reading "How to Get Honest Reviews," I couldn't help but thinking it should be called 'The Ultimate Guide to Getting Honest Reviews.' The section on how to develop your own book review program was outstanding. They didn't leave anything out. As they say, book reviews are like gold for authors and I believe any new or experienced author will benefit by studying Hart's and Hitz's system."
- Denise Wakeman, Online Business Strategist
"Shelley and Heather have done it again. This easy-to-follow guide gives you the resources you need to get your book dozens of reviews. I fully recommend 'How to Get Honest Reviews' for any author looking to separate from the pack."

- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2014I will go ahead admit that I got this book in exchange for a review, but by the time I reached the end of chapter two, I deleted it - then I went and bought it. It is certainly worth it.
Currently, I do not write books; I am an archivist. I take old books (the type that maybe one in ten thousand will read) and preserve them. For what I do, the need for a review is negligible. However, I am also a reader and reviews play a huge part in whether or not I buy a book - and they even play a part after I purchase the book - and if the reviews do not match what I see in the book, I will return it. Since I am dependent on reviews, I am a bit curious about the subject.
"How to Get Honest Reviews" is an easy-to-follow, yet highly detailed, presentation on the subject. It covers the benefits (and necessity) of having them, but also how to go about getting them. Amazon reviews are covered, of course, but also how to gain reviews on the blog front, social media, give-aways, and so on. The steps were very clear, but I was equally impressed with the level of detail given in what I call, "Watch fors." Each venue has their own rules in how a book a presented for reviews (as well as how to write a review). You do not have to worry about find these little reminders; they are embedded throughout the text, particularly where there are differences in rules across venues.
As an archivist, I am concerned about the book's structure and layout. I am pleased with this one (I am notorious for returning badly formatted books). Not only is the layout easy on the eyes, the table of contents work. Here, the TOC is a little more important since the book can be read in any order.
I think that this is an excellent book and one worth keeping close by. It is more than a tutorial, but a solid reference.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2020I’m in the process of writing my first book. I bought this book a few weeks ago and hadn’t gotten around to reading it.
Then my wife and I are having a conversation, as I’m nearing completion of my manuscript and asks what’s my marketing plan. I had a few ideas but knew I’d have my work cut out for me.
Then, almost instinctively I remembered purchasing this book. I read it in one sitting this evening. I listen to a ton of podcasts, have done a ton of research on marketing, and even have a Certificate in Digital Marketing Strategy.
The information in this book is top-notch. Purchasing this book will save me days of trying to put together a marketing plan.
I’m super appreciative to have this level of material. I’ve even paid big bucks for coaching and didn’t get nearly the level of knowledge the authors give in this book.
I highly recommend this book. It is the epitome of a book that the authors put together with full intention of being a hep and a blessing.
It’s extremely practical, step by step and can be easily implemented. By following the information in this book, the only thing you can do is to succeed.
I’m now extremely confident about my ability to effectively market my book. Make sure to read the book with a highlighter. Once you go through it, then go back and write down your action plan or record it somewhere that will be easy to follow.
I love to write and could write all day long but I not. I hardly ever, if at all leave reviews for anything. But this book was so good I just had to. Purchase this book and you will be very glad you did.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2020I bought this book a couple months ago, and then I was finally at the place where I was ready to use it's advice.
The authors have done their homework, and I learned three things about Amazon reviews that will save me time on my own journey to get honest reviews.
1. The ins and outs of using KDP Select with reviewers
2. Good places to find reviewers
3. How to ethically ask for reviews that conform to the rules of each particular platform mentioned
I would have liked a little more information about how and when in the launch process to ask for endorsements, but you can't have everything in one book. This is definitely a great read for author launches, Indie and traditional. It's concise and clear, with helpful resource lists.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2018Do you want more reviewers to review your books? Do you feel overwhelmed by even the thought of where to start? Shelley Hitz and Heather Hart are experts on this topic and want to share what they've learned over the years.
With this book you will not only know where to start but how to succeed in your efforts. This book is a very detailed guide to what it takes to get those coveted reviews. The most valuable section of this book is the part where the author explains how you should and should not approach reviewers. That first email to a reviewer is critical and I myself see a lot of people doing it wrong. So if you want to write the best letter that is going to get a great response, this is the book for you.
The only thing I question is the advice to ask friends and family for reviews. This is very tricky because constructive criticism from a close relative or friend can ruin the friendship. Also I would be very cautious about sending out advance review copies that have not been edited. First impressions are everything! So apart from those two items, this book has excellent advice that when put into practice can really help you out.
~The Rebecca Review
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2015I found this book basic and lots of times the authors would recommend a blog post or a link to read more about a topic. This, unfortunately, has become endemic to the whole non-fiction-publish-a-book-in-one-hour or 21 days or whatever. The information they present is offered elsewhere and so if you've read other marketing books then you likely don't need to read this one. If you have never read a thing about review, then this book will surely help. It's certainly of some value, hence the three stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Packed with excellent, actionable advice
This is a really thorough book by two experts who have gone into depth about the subject. Absolutely the opposite of the spammy rubbish that circulates around this genre.
It's packed full of step-by-step advice, ready-to-use email templates, actionable ideas and tons and tons of references.
These authors just got a raving fan!
