Editorial Reviews

180gm vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. Ian Hunter's latest studio album, Fingers Crossed unveils ten new, self-penned songs including his much-anticipated homage to David Bowie, 'Dandy'. Recorded at HOBO Studios in New Jersey, and co-produced by Hunter and Andy York, the record features his magnificent Rant Band and is the follow-up to 2012's acclaimed 'When I'm President.' As leader of '70s British rock legends Mott the Hoople and as a hugely influential solo artist, Ian Hunter is widely revered as one of rock'n'roll's most compelling performers and one of it's most articulate songwriters. As author of such immortal anthems as, 'All The Way From Memphis,' 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy' and 'Cleveland Rocks' and the voice of such landmark albums as, 'All The Young Dudes,' 'Mott,' 'Ian Hunter' and 'You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic,' he remains a hero to fellow musicians and fans around the world. The compositions on Fingers Crossed see Hunter covering typically wide-ranging subject matter. 'Dandy', his fond tribute to David Bowie reflects on a relationship cemented in 1972 when Bowie produced Mott's album All the Young Dudes and penned it's hit title track. Even prior to this, with Mott, Hunter recorded four iconoclastic albums - 'Mott The Hoople,' 'Mad Shadows,' 'Wildlife' and 'Brain Capers.' The band's artistic and commercial success continued with 'Mott' and 'The Hoople,' between them, containing the hits, 'All The Way From Memphis,' 'Honaloochie Boogie,' 'Roll Away The Stone' and 'The Golden Age Of Rock 'n' Roll.' On their final tour, they took out a then little known band, Queen, who would have a hit single with a song about their experiences, 'Now I'm Here.' It would be the only time Queen would open for anyone and the band members would stay long term friends with Ian, contributing backing vocals to his 'All American Alien Boy' album. Mott have also been credited by John Lydon (Sex Pistols) and Mick Jones (The Clash) as being one of the pioneers and inspirations behind the burgeoning punk / new wave movement. Later on, Ian would go on to produce Generation X's 'Valley Of The Dolls' album and The Clash would play on Ian's 'Short Back 'n' Sides' release. 'Fingers Crossed' continues Ian's phenomenal run of Five Star critically acclaimed records following 'Rant' (2001), 'Shrunken Heads' (2007), 'Man Overboard' (2009) and 'When I'm President' (2012). Alongside Proper Records 30-Disc anthology box set, 'Stranded in Reality' due on 2 September, 2016 will be quite a year for Mr Hunter.

I feel a bit guilty about only giving this album 4 stars, but overall I thought the songs were not quite as powerful or memorable as the ones on the last handful of albums that Ian Hunter put it. It seems no matter what this man records, it's going to be pretty darn good or totally great, and this album is no exception: a mighty fine collection of new songs, one of those albums that your "favorite" song may change with each listen.

Once again, all the right ingredients are on display: Lyrics that stick in your head, guitars that pack a punch (kudos not only to Ian, but to the underrated guitar slinger in his band, James Mastro), and melodies that linger. How is it possible that Ian Hunter is now in his mid-70s and still putting out albums as potent as this one? Well, it MUST be the therapeutic power of rock and roll, right? This is guy a walking endorsement for such musical magic.

Whether you want to give this album 4 stars or 5 stars, this is absolutely a must have for longtime fans of Ian Hunter and/or Mott the Hoople. This man is a treasure!

Ian Hunter, who remains perhaps one of the greatest performers/songwriters of the last 50 years (the 'English' Bob Dylan?), and who is criminally under-appreciated here in the US, has released "Fingers Crossed" - the latest in a career-long string of brilliant albums. The 180- gram LP (with included Mp3 download card) was pressed "in the EU", and with the exception of one or two barely audible "crackle-like" sounds between tracks 2-3 (never audible when the music is playing), this is a very well-pressed LP. The music emerges from a totally silent background, and there is no trace of groove noise. The LP was flat and without defect, excepting the afore-mentioned slight crackling sound. For fans who prefer the warmth and natural sonics of the vinyl format, this is the version to own.

Another brilliant album from the unstoppable Mr. Hunter. I'd say it's a continued late-period renaissance but he never really stopped making great records, so it's really just a continuation of one of the greatest career rock'n'roller's fearsome and joyous body of work. The title track and his beautiful farewell to Bowie "Dandy" are classic melodic ballads that can stand right up there with "The Ballad Of Mott", "Ships", "Irene Wilde", and "I Wish I Was Your Mother." And there's plenty of the revved-up rock that Ian's incredible Rant Band has been helping him blast round the world for many years now. I recommend this record unequivocally and urge you to catch a live show whenever humanly possible!

I've been listening to Ian Hunter for the greater part of the 57 years of my life. After one listen, it's no wonder he is my favorite artist, hands down. He has been very productive over the last 15 years and his talent hasn't waned one bit from when he (and I) was younger. He has a fantastic band backing him and they mesh extremely well together. As always, he is underappreciated and isn't the major star that he should be but I know for a fact that he's perfectly happy where he is. It's evident that he takes his work seriously and that he doesn't take his fans for granted as he has produced another excellent album.

Another fine album from Ian Hunter. Definitely the most Mott style album he has made in years. Some of the guitar work is influenced by Mick Ralph. Not a gimmick within ear shot. Highly recommended.

At 77 years old Ian still rocks. His Rant band is excellent and Ian's songwriting just seems to get stronger with age. Of special note is his tribute to David Bowie on the song Dandy. Catchy song and great album!!

Don't know if this is the last, but it has been a long, great wonderful trip.

IAN HUNTER CLASSE 1939....mai avrei pensato da giovane ( e non lo sono più ) di comprare un disco di rock and roll ad un 77enne.
Un signor disco. C'è di tutto . Rock , ballate, echi dilaniani, suoni che ricordano i Moot the Hoople ( Dandy). Soldi ben spesi .
    Grande IAN

Mott The Hoople front man and all round rock legend Ian Hunter is a man who never stops working. With the release of Fingers Crossed, Ian Hunter has added another record to his impressive string of releases.

When I look back at albums like When I'm President, Man Overboard, Shrunken Heads and Rant, it occurs to me that this man has been releasing albums that either match or exceed the music he released in his '70s prime. Ian Hunter has never stopped producing albums with recognisable hooks and clever lyrics. He has without a doubt always kept his wits about him and Fingers Crossed is no different.

In comparison to his previous few releases this is not my favourite. It isn't as good as Man Overboard or When I'm President, it is a little less memorable in terms of guitar riffs and catchy choruses but it still has more than enough charm and craft to warrant a purchase. Fans will eat up songs like the David Bowie tribute Dandy, the ballad Fingers Crossed with its very tasteful guitar solo and Stranded In Reality. These songs are padded and held in place with some other fun rockers like the opening That's When Trouble Starts, Bow Street Runners and Morpheus. The closing numbers You Can't Live In The Past and Long Time are a nice change in style and provide the album with a little variety.

The production and sound quality of Fingers Crossed is as nice as I could of hoped for. I have always enjoyed Ian Hunters more raw live in the studio sound and it is very much intact here. You can hear every acoustic strum, every change in tone from the drums and keeps the character in Hunter's ageing grisly vocals.

I may be half the age of the average Ian Hunter fan but I would recommend that those long time fans pick this record up. I had a blast with this album, I can see it being played quite frequently in the months to come. It is a fun consistent album that is very well produced and has its place with the others in my collection.

Ian Hunter just gets better with age. I love this album. There is a very poignant tribute to David Bowie, called Dandy. Hunter's lyrics are always top notch, as is the musicianship of him and his suporting players. Don't hesitate. Buy it!
