About the author

Amazon #1 Bestselling Author and a Readers' Favorite Gold Medal winner.
A veteran of the corporate rat-race, John W. Mefford never realized he was mentally documenting every experience of his professional journey—not until he started his first novel during a so-called "corporate timeout."
A voracious reader of mystery-thrillers since before he could shave, John enjoys weaving a twisty tale that keeps readers riveted until the last page. He's also learned he's pretty good at embellishing. Just don't tell his fourth-grade teacher.

I am one of John Mefford’s advanced readers. Although I received a free copy prior to publication, I bought my own as soon as it became available. Why? Because I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
AT Dusk, the fifth of John Mefford’s Alex Troutt series, is another must read book. Like all the others in this series, it is very readable by itself. I highly recommend getting the earlier books because you will find it so much more satisfying if read in conjunction with the others in this series. Alex Troutt is a kick ass female FBI agent. She is as tenacious as a wolverine, while still maintaining a strong sense of humor and a surprisingly soft side as a single mother.
This episode in Alex Troutt’s life reminds me of an episode of Criminal Minds. it's more like watching a movie or tv show and not just reading a book.
John quickly develop his characters. Even casual characters are more than cardboard cutouts. He deftly weaves his tale, presenting situations and locations so real, you find yourself immersed in the storyline, caring about the characters as if you know them personally.
If you enjoy a well crafted story with realistic players and locales, you simply cannot go wrong with any of Mr. Mefford’s tales. Buy yourself a copy of AT Dusk... you will not regret it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2020Alex and Nick go after a cold case and instead find a serial killer and an entirely separate case. Then, the personal relationships had a different spin as Brad was sent to another city. The focus on Alex’s views of the age difference and her relationship with her children was entertaining and insightful to her and her dynamic with her family and co-workers.
The villains were slightly predictable, but the writing and character development was fascinating, especially with the flashbacks of the serial killers youth. Working with a local agency introduced us to another strong female detective and it created a new dynamic where Alex questioned if others viewed her as the same type to never slow down. The two women had a great chemistry and I hope to see them work another case (Terri’s sisters disappearance) or become friends in future books. Also..the ending!!! And it was short, sweet and perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2016I received this book free from the author to read and leave an honest review. I also purchased this book because I love this series so much. This is another wonderful addition to a fantastic series. I just love Alex Troutt...she's smart, strong, and knows what she is doing. Alex gets involved and follows all the leads on this new case of a psychopathic killer because of similarities to a cold case of hers. John Mefford has all the right twists and turns and you don't know where to look next. It's another of his books that you can't stop reading. Excellent writing along with a wonderful story. I really think this is the best book yet and I'm already looking forward to the next. I definitely recommend this book. It's just plain good reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2016Wow!!! Alex is in deep trouble again. In this book 5 of her series, she is in even deeper trouble than before. This serial murderer is so sick, and the crimes are so horrific, that even FBI Agent Alex and her police force partner Terri (Nick is still recovering from his injury and can only assist some of the time) have no idea what they are dealing with until almost the very end. This story is loaded with twists and turns and leads you in several different directions at once. It is hard to put down. If you like thrillers that make you think, I believe you will like this story and, in fact, this whole series. All the stories are well crafted and superb in keeping your interest. I was given an advance copy in exchange for an honest review, but the story was so good I purchased it. It is well worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2016Will be reading the book 6 after this review. Alex character developed so good, you'll feel what she is feeling. But after reading many books written by this author it was easy for me to know who the killer was. Thrill was finding out why he was killing and how they were going to stop him. Like the ending.
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2016First off, I am an advance reader for John Mefford, so I was given a free copy in exchange for my honest review. But I bought the book as soon as it was available.
AT Dusk is probably his best book yet in the Alex Troutt series.
Alex is called to the scene of a murder in a small suburb because the victim has similar injuries as one of her 10 yr old cold cases. She works with a very hyper new detective who has her hands full with a team that seems to always mess things up.
As the bodies pile up, the hunt for the psychopath who is killing these women leads them in many directions, but Alex and her team follow every lead. Two of the three suspects have been around her daughter and she fears she may become a victim too. Trying to keep track of all three and figure out how they fit in is, at best, difficult because their lives just don't seem to make sense to her.
In the meantime, she is trying to figure out exactly where her relationship is going with her colleague..
If you like police thrillers, you will LOVE this book (and all of Mefford's)...
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2023This was a complex, twisted, and intriguing story with many surprising twists. It's certainly a must read series.
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2016Alex Troutt has so much going on! Her situations with her partner(s), potential lovers, and her children fill her mind while she tries to catch a killer. Mefford weaves her story well, with surprises left and right (although I did figure out who C was before it was revealed). So happy she was bold at the ending, can't wait for the next book to see how Alex handles it!

5.0 out of 5 stars "At ten he practised on squirrels..."
The reader always knows that they are in for a good read with John Mefford books and the whole Alex Trout series is no exception. This is the fifth, and one of his best and can be enjoyed as a stand alone novel, as can all of the others. This time we reconnect with Alex, her family and colleagues and a feisty new partner, Terri, who joins her whilst Nick, her usual sidekick, is temporarily out of action. The death of a prostitute eerily mirrors that of a cold case killing. A suspect is held - but is it him?
With his usual great characterisations, sparky dialogue and fast paced action intertwining with Alex's often problematic home life, Mefford's novel twists and turns to a crescendo of an ending. I originally received a pre-publication, beta copy of At Dusk but could not resist purchasing it to reread in it's final format.
Highly recommended to all who love a good thriller, well delivered.

5.0 out of 5 stars A suspenseful page-turning tale that keeps the reader guessing.
One of the things I love about this series is the ongoing development of the main characters. Alex is again on the hunt for a ruthless killer while trying to balance her need to discover the truth with being a supportive mother to her teens. As always, John Mefford has crafted a suspenseful page-turning tale that keeps the reader guessing.
While each book in this series can stand alone, I highly recommend reading them in order to get the most from the series.
DISCLOSURE: I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review but bought the book in order to support the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Thriller
John Mefford has created a great leading character in Alex Troutt, and this latest outing is the best in the series (so far), but it is also the darkest by quite a way.
One of the things that I like about Mefford's writing is that he is very good at describing characters, and there are some great new ones in this book, not that all of them necessarily get along with Alex, in fact she frequently has to fight against some of them.
I don't like to give too much away about the plot, but it is very convoluted and involves a criminal mastermind who commits crimes which are truly horrible and leads Alex and her team into some very bleak and dark places.
I thoroughly recommend this book.
