Editorial Reviews

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2016 release, the ninth album from the hip hop trio. And The Anonymous Nobody is their first studio album in four years. Includes the single ‘Pain’ featuring Snoop Dogg. The album also features Jill Scott, Usher, Justin Hawkins (The Darkness) and others. As the band states in their press release: “Hey, everybody! We are De La Soul: Posdnous, Dave, and Maseo. Over the last three years, we've collaborated with some of L.A.'s finest studio musicians and recorded them in free-styled, unrehearsed, jam sessions. We have a fantastic cast of artist we've collaborated with. Damon Albarn (of Blur/Gorillaz), 2 Chainz, Little Dragon, and David Byrne (of Talking Heads) have blessed us with their talents.”

Hip Hop album of the year for the adults ear!!! It makes sense than grown men make grown folks music, but my kids sing along with this too (Pain, Trainwreck). Of course I had to intro them to De La or they wouldn't have found own their way to this music. My oldests boys were surprised by the 2Chainz cameo and his ability to switch up his flow like he did on Whoodeeni , but they liked it. Memory of Us feat Estelle and Pete Rock is CLASSIC.

I had to warm up to the whole album being my favorite since on first listen a lot of it went over my head, but I think that's the case with most DeLa classic albums. Who honestly liked every track on 3 Feet High... until after a solid year of listening to that cassette on auto reverse in your walkman?

Easily one of their best albums. Got with the times. The great thing about it is that it's not the same old crap. Which is what a lot of rap groups try to do when they are gone for a while or past their prime. It will grow in you BIG TIME. Only De La could get 2 Chains, Talking Heads, A Swedish electronic la group, the lead singer of tlThe Darkness all on 1 album and pull it off. This album is a mature grown up De La Soul. Sort of all comes together in this album. Like the journey that I started when I first started listening to them in 1988 when I was in 8th grade has come full circle.

I'm giving it four stars based solely on the fact that it is De La Soul. I purchased it to support the artist - but I'm not impressed. It's very artsy and eclectic but it's not something to vibe to, it's something to "listen and learn". It's too deep to enjoy - fully.

This album spans genres, but is still 100% De La. If you love music - especially quality music, you will love this album. It's not your typical pop music, which is very similar to fast food: it may taste good going down, but doesn't provide that nourishment and satisfaction that we crave for the long-term. I can see myself listening to this album 5, 10, 15, 20+ years from now. It might not hit the top of the charts, but it's an album that you'll continually come back to for years to come. I've been waiting for music that stirs my soul for years, and this has definitely helped satisfy my craving. Oh yeah, and they released a documentary about the making of the album: [...]

Wasn't sure what to expect after their long hiatus. First listen of the album didn't quite grab me—sure, there are a few uptempo tracks that are easy to appreciate (Cbgbs, Whoodeeni), but much of the rest felt like experimental filler. After listening through a few more times, those off-the-wall tracks started to come into focus and complete the picture. When you finally get there, it shows itself as a beautiful wide angle shot of music with a shallow depth of field on hip-hop. One of De La's best to date.

The CD was just what my boyfriend was looking for. The CD arrived quickly and it was just as described. I would buy again from this seller.

WOW! I was a fan from their early days. Lost me on the Art Official Intelligence series. But this album, is.....glorious! Very mature in theme and execution with live instrumentation weaving fluidly in and out of themes, creating an abstract yet cohesive tapestry of sound. If you like jazz, get this. If you like hip hop, get this. If you like trip hop, get this. If you still breathe, GET THIS ALBUM!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Plugs Roll Deep!
Reviewed in Canada on July 17, 2017
At 42 years old, I'm a true golden era hip hop kid. And in the arsenal of artists that flourished in this era, if I had to pick a favourite group, De La Soul would most certainly stand on top as they have not only provided us with some of the best albums in the genre, they continue to thrive with new material and live shows, (something only The Roots and ATCQ do as well).

When I heard that they were starting a new album funded solely via a Kickstarter campaign, I laughed as only the plugs would dare to embark on something this dangerous. Well, I paid off. Not only did they produce a sample-free album, they brought on a troubadour of live musicians to record and pave the way for the foundation of the album's track list. The end result is fresh as hell yet very familiar and very De La esque. This early on I couldn't dare pick a favourite track, as it will take dozens of listens to truly appreciate the scope of this production. Much like De La Soul is Dead, I'm pretty sure that it will take a while for the brilliance of this album to truly sink in. Yes, tracks like Pain, Greyhounds and Trainwreck stand out on their own, but I personally feel that the album's last few tracks are diamonds in the rough. If you're a fan of the genre, I urge you to give this album a shot as it truly rolls deep with experience, insight and musicality that only the Plugs could provide.

A long awaited album from De La Soul. As a big fan I was eager to get my hands on this.
Initially, after the first play, it wasn't what I was expecting. The album is a bit of a slow burner but the more its listened too the better it gets.
The good thing about this group is that they're always mixing up their styles and they've certainly done it with this.
I just hope its not another 12 year wait for the next one!!
