Of A Darker Void: Asterion Noir Book 2 (Amaranthe 12) Kindle Edition
Diplomat. Rebel. Fugitive.
Nika Tescarav has lived many lives, though she no longer remembers most of them. Chased by agents of a regime that will do anything to protect the secrets of the Rasu Protocol, Nika flees to the stars with her once and future lover on a mission to expose those secrets. A race across alien worlds both exotic and deadly leads them to the bastion of the enemy, but its discovery brings a terrible revelation: sometimes the truth is indeed worse than the lies spun to conceal it.
With Nika and Dashiel on the run, NOIR steps up to defend against a virulent pathogen unleashed upon innocent civilians. When a desperate government moves to crush the resistance once and for all, unlikely alliances are forged between former adversaries and all paths converge in an explosive showdown that will change the future of the Asterion Dominion forever.
ASTERION NOIR
700,000 years ago, the Asterions fled persecution for their pro-synthetic beliefs. In the safe harbor of a distant galaxy, they have evolved into a true biosynthetic race and built a thriving society upon the pillars of personal autonomy, mutual respect and boundless innovation.
Now that society is fracturing at the seams. Beneath lies built upon lies, the shocking truth as to why threatens the future of not merely the Asterions, but all life in the universe.
Cyberpunk and space opera collide in a thrilling new trilogy from the author of the epic Aurora Rhapsody space opera saga. Enter a world of technological wonders, exotic alien life, enthralling characters, captivating worlds—and a terrifying evil lurking in the void that will shatter it all.

"[A] brilliant trilogy "Aurora Rising" by G. S. Jennsen. You are thrown into action and suspense from the start and the plot of the story unravels at a satisfying pace, all the time giving the feeling of deeper and even more nefarious revelations to come. "This book might be the perfect set-in-space science fiction book. That's [a] bold statement with things like Hitchhiker's Guide roaming about, but I feel that strongly about it. Jennsen is one of those magical authors who make you forget you're reading." -- Novel Commentary (reviewing Starhsine)

About the author

G. S. JENNSEN lives somewhere in the U.S., in a locale that may or may not be where she lived the last time she published a book (she’s a gypsy at heart), with her husband and two dogs. She has become an internationally bestselling author since her first novel, Starshine, was published in 2014. She has chosen to continue writing under an independent publishing model to ensure the integrity of her stories and her ability to execute on the vision she has for their telling.
While she has been a lawyer, a software engineer and an editor, she’s found the life of a full-time author preferable by several orders of magnitude. When she isn’t writing, she’s gaming or working out or getting lost in the mountains that loom large outside the windows in her home. Or she’s dealing with a flooded basement, or standing in a line at Walmart and wondering who all these people are (because she’s probably new in town). Or sitting on her back porch with a glass of wine, looking up at the stars, trying to figure out what could be up there.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2018Ok, by now, if y'all have read my reviews about G.S. Jennsen's books, you will have picked up on what a huge fan I am of her highly imaginative stories. The latest Asterion Noir book really cements G.S as one of my all time favourite authors. Of A Darker Void sees Nika and Dashiel working to find out what the Guides have been up to for the past eight years and just who or what the Rasu are. Their task is made more difficult as the Guides and their minions work even harder to bring Noir down and increase the number of Asterions behaving badly and out of character. Some tense moments in the book had me on the edge of my seat and the action and characters really have pulled me into the story - I am well and truly invested in what happens next. I can't wait to find out what G.S has planned for the characters and to see where the story is going :)
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2018After starting G. S. Jennsen's new cyberpunk series with the release of Exin Ex Machina this past summer, I was immediately hooked, so it's no surprise that this book became one of my most anticipated reads of 2018. As much as I loved Jennsen's previous Aurora Rhapsody books, there's just something about the characters in the Asterion Noir series that grabbed me from the very beginning, and coming back to their story and their world in this book was everything I could have hoped it would be. It's honestly a little hard for me to figure out how to write this review because I basically spent a little more than 48 hours flying through the pages as fast as I could between all of my other life obligations. It's all a bit of a blur now and I definitely need to go back and reread the book from the beginning sometime soon so I can take my time and really enjoy it, but man, what a freaking ride! I can say one thing for sure: I loved every second of it.
Of A Darker Void explores the questions raised in Exin Ex Machina to unravel a sinister mystery and reveal answers that force every character in the book to make some pretty drastic decisions. While the stakes were already high in the first book, we didn't really understand why that was, which meant we (and the characters themselves) didn't realize just how bad things really were until now. And maybe we still don't. There are a lot of questions that have yet to be answered, and I'm already looking forward to the information the characters will uncover in the next book.
Nika and Dashiel take center stage here yet again, which was great because I love them both. Especially Nika. She's easily my favorite. It was an emotional journey watching them both navigate the complexities of their relationship and, in Nika's case, her very identity. However, I also really appreciated the way the secondary characters were fleshed out and took on a life of their own in this book. They were good characters in the first book, too, but here it seemed like we really got to know some of them better and understand their relationships with each other, as well as the things that motivated them and how far each of them were willing to go to do what they thought was right. I tend to be a little hesitant about books with more than 3-4 point of view characters, but Jennsen balances her cast wonderfully, and I felt a lot more invested in some of the secondary characters' personal journeys than I expected to.
This series has quickly become one of my favorites, and Jennsen continues to be a phenomenal storyteller. I have no more words to really express how much I love this story, so all I'll add is this: If you enjoy cyberpunk sci-fi and you aren't already reading this series, you need to start, like yesterday.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2018Good characters, great action, mysteries gradually revealed. Good job. But I really hate cliffhanger endings when the next book isn’t available yet. Grrr.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2024Loving the way this story is unfolding, and really looking forward to the next installment. Highly recommend this series. Cheers.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2018As I was reading Of A Darker Void, I realized my attention was often drawn to the Thomas Sowell quote that hangs on my wall (please see video). I will say no more about that --- if I did I would probably accidentally add a spoiler. I have read all of G.S. Jennson’s novels; reviewed all of them, sometimes with only one word, because I am NOT a writer and I find it difficult to say WHY Ms. Jennsen is my favorite author of all time. So this time I posted a video to show that, in addition to the perfect flow of her stories, and in addition to her ability to make me really know and care about her characters, SHE MAKES ME THINK! <grin> She also makes me laugh, makes me cry, makes me sit on the edge of my seat. Read Asterion Noir. Read Aurora Rhapsody. You will be very glad you did.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2021As with the first of this three part story, this one does not disappoint. The plot is further revealed and character development continues. It’s a perfect transition to the final book in the series (Asterion Noir). I’m looking forward to the next installment!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2020I've enjoyed many of the premises of the series & particularly the science involved.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2018Ms Jennsen consistently writes enticing, intriguing stories about people's lives in the far future. Being able to live thousands of years and yet human foibles still get in the way. Great science and well thought out plots keep me coming back and wanting more of the worlds, the universes and the people who inhabit them in her rich tapestries of possible futures. Oh yea, did I mention scary, terrible aliens? Yea those too! Her books are not to be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again..
Well she's done it again. She has written another book I cannot put down. Oh the adventure! I feel like I am out there in space with Nika and Dasha and Perrin and grumpy old Joaquin shooting up dines, exploring space and generally being badass! Keep them coming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping from beginning to end
The much anticipated second novel in the Asterion Noir series begins with a mystery then builds at pace to an impossible-to-put-down climax.
The author’s command of plot, pacing and characterisation is enviable. Every story thread (and there are several) follows a believable line and the actions of our characters are always exactly what you would have believed of them. This is especially true when they utterly surprise you.
I can’t recommend these books highly enough. I thought after the Aurora Rhapsody series by the same author I might have been jarred by this new series. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. This is a whole new galaxy to explore and new characters to explore it with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pulled in by amazing characters and believable worlds
G. S. Jennsen’s books just keep getting better. The depth of detail makes the world and its people completely real, I definitely feel like I’m in another world when reading.
Once again it’s a roller coaster ride of adventure and mayhem and I thoroughly enjoyed every stomach churning dive and every heart stopping climb. And there are moments when I teared up. The balance between action and softer moments is really well done and it’s all part of what makes this an easy story to read.
What I particularly liked about this one was the constant questioning and wondering about who was in the right, who was using their power for good and which side would win out. Power corrupts and only the strongest minded person can defeat that. G. S. Jennsen puts these characters in positions where they have to make that choice and it makes for excellent storytelling, tension and intrigue.
The characters become real. They have weaknesses and flaws that make them individuals and not all made from the same mould. It makes them endearing or someone I want to hate. But mostly I want to read about them, follow their story because they pull me in.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book in the series and will definitely be waiting – maybe a little impatiently – for the next one and whatever comes after from someone who has become my favourite author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Asterion Noir 2 is great
Another fantastic instalment to the Asterion Noir universe. Perfectly paced, great character development, and utterly gripping. Can’t wait for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars More great story-telling
This author seems incapable of writing a bad book. I've not been a huge fan of cyberpunk in the past, but this is an engaging roller-coaster of a story so far, and is a must-buy as far as I'm concerned. Can't wait for the final part!
