- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2007Like all of Damien Rice's breathtaking songs, many on this CD need multiple listenings, but this is still a powerful, beautiful collection. He touches on some familiar themes (infidelity, longing, unrequited love) particularly with the haunting "accidental babies" which is a lost-love letter that combines his lyrical poetry with a more direct, simple melody. His longing is palpable. "9 crimes" is likewise a poignant description of how he could be unfaithful while recognizing how he is destroying his lover. Rice breaks different ground with songs like "coconut skins", a jangly guitar-driven track that when listened to casually may remind you pleasantly of Bob Dylan. He smartly retains the amazing vocalist Lisa Hannigan and cellist Vyvienne Long, to whom he owes a great deal of his success. On "9", Damien Rice recaptures the aspects of his songwriting, singing, and playing that we loved on his previous works, and explores some newer ground, with great success.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2019Have worn out his other two albums from constant replaying. Such a true artist that packs so much emotion into relatively simple songs. Simple in the sense that he is a wordsmith that chooses each word carefully to paint such beautifully realized intentions. Didn't think this would live up to the quality of the other two, but I was very pleasantly surprised. No one else shares their soul as openly as he does.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2007I loved his first cd, especially Volcano. The lady who does the backing vocal stole my heart. The strings are simple and powerful. This cd seems to follow on the same path. It reminds me of a secret treasure not many folks know about. I am not sure why this man is not a major star, perhaps marketing, perhaps timing. His voice and talent are hard to deny. I will listen and continue to be a fan. As for the lyrics advisory, don't sweat it. You hear worse on CNN.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2016This is a grat album by Damien Rice. Not personally my favourite, 'cause I love his debut O, but it has some incredible stuff. And is his last album with Lisa Hannigan, so it makes it ever better.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2014I love Damien Rice! Plain and simple. I love his music, his lyrics, everything. This is such a great cd. There may be a couple of songs on this cd, opposed to his first, that I don't care for. I think Damien Rice is one of the best singer/songwriters of our time. I would compare him equally with Ray Lamontagne.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020It’s Damien Rice - what’s not to love?
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2006Unless of course you want to delve deeper into depression. You have been warned!
To be quite honest with you, this CD didn't live up to my expecatations. There are some hauntingly beautiful songs on here, but as a whole, it's missing something...doesn't quite flow. It's not all bad though: I love Damien's voice and his collaboration with Lisa Hannigan - they sound absolutely great together.
So, if I had to listen to this or some other folksy singer like, let's say, James Blunt, then I'd listen to this hands down...even if I was depressed as h*ll. Even though 9 doesn't live up to its predecessor, it's still better than 90% of the garbage out there.
Peace out.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2015Love it... so poignat and deep. All his music is. My goal is to eventually own all his CD's. Calming and opens up your feelings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Examen CD
Je connaissais ce chanteur, et l'ai redécouvert. Trés bon.
Des chansons cool et hard en même temps, et ayant du sens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mein (quasi) Doppelalbum des Jahrzehnts
