Editorial Reviews

Live Today signals a new journey for bassist and composer Derrick Hodge as he embarks on a solo recording career. The title alludes to his top guiding principle in creating his 2013 debut album, a stunning achievement that showcases the profound depth and breadth of his musicality. Even though Hodge has played with such jazz titans as pianist Mulgrew Miller and trumpeter (and labelmate) Terence Blanchard, as well as R&B stars Jill Scott and Maxwell, the 33-year-old bassist is probably best known for anchoring the Grammy award-winning Robert Glasper Experiment. Similar to how Glasper concocts a distinctive m‚lange of modern jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, Live Today too integrates those genres and more into something that's potent and personal.

Derrick Hodge is someone music lovers should check out. I first heard him with Mulgrew Miller. He sounded amazing then and has only continued to grow.

If Derrick fails it is via his high level of creativity. He did not create a conceptual album but showcased his highly variable musical genius. A greatest hits of the many genres of a brilliant if unfocused musician.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this CD. It's nothing like what he does with Robert Glasper, which is what many will expect. This is his own sound and vision. I probably wouldn't classify this as a "jazz" project-it's just music. Takes some getting used to, but i was already enjoying it more on my 2nd listen.

Amazingly done. Every musician on this album gives a genuine, heartfelt and soulful performance. Derrick Hodge's versatility, facility and creativity is unparalleled

Being a huge fan of this man's first solo work I regret that the prospective buyers can't hear excerpts from the CD on Amazon. I'm sort of wondering if this is the reason for so few reviews, not enough people ventured out to buy it. But the reviews here, at least three out of four, are absolutely on the money. I'll even add that, as in the case of all the great musicians, he has the kind of sound that changes, creates the atmosphere around you. I know people say that with all jazz music, but with Hodge you think of the term Wall Of Sound that they used for some of the pop music back in the sixties. You do get a sense that he is reaching for something well beyond his musical peers. He takes that blend of jazz and hip hop and creates a lavish sound, for instance in the title song with the great rap artist, Common - who even in his own music you hear a lot of jazz influence - Mr. Hodge surrounds that mellow yet gritty voice with lush strings giving the voice an added distinction. I, for one, am grateful that the man displayed respect for his audience, who has come to expect disrespect from the hip hop class, in selecting Common. Wish I could say the same of Robert Glasper's Experiment.

However this work is both carefully crafted as well as experimental. You will hear something of European influence in songs like Boro March and Message of Hope both of them infused with that so called angular sound we associate with great jazz music. You will here a more earthy sound in Holding Onto You featuring vocalist Alan Hampton, on acoustic guitar, all the way to the rather hard jazz funk of Gritty Folk.

If you want to get a sample of his playing, just listen to Hodge's solos on the Terence Blanchard CDs, but to get the full range of Hodge's talent, please, go into your nearest independent record store play the CD at the music station. Odds are it'll soon be in heavy rotation on your own player.

All I can say is heed the words of those three out of four reviewers as well as mine. Do yourself a favor and BUY THIS CD!!! It's a true thriller.

This is really a beautiful album.

To call this album jazz is indeed a stretch and I can only assume that is what threw off our friend J.T. Murphy down there, who claims to be from "Jazz Heaven, NJ." To give this album 1 star is not only misguided but disrespectful. This ain't your Dad's jazz, there is no bebop here. This album crosses many genres, encompasses astonishing virtuosity, and is indeed original. You can start to get a feel for Derrick Hodge on this album and his message - "Live Today" - by sitting back and letting the beautiful melodies, rhythms, harmonies and performance take you away. Enjoy hearing Glasper, Chris Dave, Alan Hampton, Common, Marcus Strickland and more play their hearts out and redefine what we think of jazz as we approach the new fusion of jazz.

    Happy listening. Cheers.

I respect all the musicians who played on all of Robert Glasper albums. Derrick Hodge's album is one with mixed feelings for me. Out of all the songs i can listen to only 6 or 7 songs.

The ones that i like are absolutely wonderful. They invoke dry desert landscapes next to a small town over a highway.
And this made me love the alb but not as a whole.

vielleicht! Der Mann weis, was er will.
