Ulterior Motives Kindle Edition

3.7 3.7 out of 5 stars 47 ratings

It was supposed to be a family vacation in paradise.

Instead, Jake Cornish's dream vacation in the Philippines quickly turns into a nightmare when he's kidnapped and held for ransom by ruthless captors after storming out on his wife during a heated argument.
Trapped in a cage on an isolated beach with no means of escape, Jake struggles with the potentially deadly last words he said to his wife and an outrageous new demand from his kidnappers, one that would change his life forever.
As ulterior motives are exposed and tensions reach boiling point, desperation and loyalty collide as Jake and his captors are pushed to the brink of their limits.
Will love and determination be enough to save Jake from the ruthless clutches of his kidnappers, or will he be consumed by their twisted demand?
Ulterior Motives is a pulse pounding tale of ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. If you're a fan of high-stakes family drama and heart-wrenching thrills, you'll love Ulterior Motives.

British-born suspense writer Mel Parish's innate curiosity leads her to find intrigue even in everyday happenings. She is fascinated by how one seemingly small decision can have dramatic repercussions, a fascination she explores in her stories of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Fortunately, the characters in her head are the ones who have to deal with the fall-out while she leads a relatively normal life - or at least, what she considers normal.

Mel wrote her first book at the age of twelve when she took her English teacher’s instructions to write a story with more than one chapter literally and ended up with a young adult mystery novel. The passion for writing was temporarily eclipsed by the needs of career, marriage, and family, but was reignited when her then eight-year-old daughter announced she was writing a book, prompting Mel to wonder why she’d ever stopped. She’s been writing ever since and has published seven novels. Her latest book, Under Suspicion, (Detective Rigby series book 3) was released in June 2021.

Born in the north-east of England and now resident in New York, Mel Parish has also lived in London and Hong Kong for substantial periods and traveled extensively on all three continents. An avid traveler and walker, Mel spends her free time exploring places near and far and blogs about her trips on Food for the Author: Books and Travel.

Great psychological thriller that grabs you on the opening page and keeps you guessing at the ultimate outcome long after you've finished each chapter. There's no lagging here...you wonder how the character got embroiled in this mess and then, will he ever get out alive. I found it a very tense and suspenseful read, and quite frankly, I didn't put the book down once I started reading it. Looking forward to the sequel!

A compelling psychological thriller. Having lived in the Philippines, I was engrossed by the setting and could well imagine the motivations and fears of the main characters. I thought the main character was well developed and the plot was suspenseful. In addition to being a man-vs. man story, it is also man vs. nature. The novel is thought provoking and intense.

Set in the Philippine islands, the lushness is nicely offset by some simple-minded but brutal criminals.
The plot seems simple, but there is a submerged plot that keeps our protagonist struggling for his freedom. Add in some minor distractions in the form of two girls, one languid and cruel, the other playful and innocent, and you have a nice blend of hope, despair, greed, and salvation.

Better than I expected, but could have been even better with more twists and turns for pro- and antagonists both.

Good read for a vacation, at the beach.

I could not put it down...From the moment I started reading "Ulterior Motives", I was captivated! So many twists and turns.

What some people will do to get what they want...will good or evil win this time? At what price? And who really suffers? You will be surprised by the answers!

sort of long winded and drawn out unrealistically, the sexual scenario seemed contrived and didnt fit with his seeming low morals

First, many thanks to the author, who kindly provided a free copy of Ulterior Motives in exchange for an honest review. Let me add this as well: while I love my Kindle, and reading e-books, there is just something special about receiving a paperback book in the mail. When this book arrived, it made my day. Nothing beats having a new book in your hand!

Imagine for a minute, that you have a fight with your significant other. Things get heated, and you get frustrated, so you do the right thing and walk away. You storm out of your hotel room, but before you know it, the lights go out - you’ve been cracked in the back of the head. You wake up in a cage, on a beach. You don’t know who your captors are, or what they want. Are you to be held for ransom? Sold into slavery? Eaten?

This is the exact situation that Jake Cornish faces in Ulterior Motives, a tension filled thriller that will keep you turning the pages, desperate to find out what happens next. When the ransom demand sent to Jake’s wife goes unanswered, the tension ratchets higher as Jake wonders if he will ever be released - and his captors wonder just how to make use of him.

This author does a great job drawing you into this story. As it goes on, and you learn more about the people who kidnapped Jake, you are pulled into their story as well. Some of their motivations will truly surprise you, and you may find yourself feeling sympathetic towards some of them as well. As the blurb states, this is “a story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.” It may surprise you just how ordinary these people can be, and what they can do when driven to the ragged edge. The Jake at the end of this tale is very much a changed man from the one that began it.

Again, many thanks to this author for the opportunity to read this book.

I was extremely disappointed by the ending. After going through everything with the primary character, I wanted all loose ends accounted for. It was a stressful and agonizing book.

Not only was this a page-turner, it had a refreshingly unusual plot. It was a quick, uncomplicated read with a satisfying ending and some thought-provoking issues along the way. As a dog lover, I only wish that Jake had made peace with those wonderful German shepherds.
