Purchase options and add-ons

Butterflies are brilliant pollinators and add vibrancy and colour to the garden. A summer's day wouldn't be the same without the gentle fluttering of delicate wings. They connect us with living and breathing nature and are an essential part of a dynamic ecosystem. However, in the past forty years, these insects, which were once a common sight in our gardens, are now in decline thanks to habit loss, climate change and the use of pesticides.

But do not despair - there is a lot you can do to help improve their numbers! Planting for Butterflies will show you how you can attract these beautiful insects and help them to flourish by creating a butterfly-friendly garden. No matter how small or large your space - from a window ledge in the city to a country garden - Jane Moore offers advice on the nectar-rich blooms to grow, and when and where to plant them.

This charmingly illustrated, practical guide will set your garden a flutter.

Gardening is my passion!

I'm a hands-on head gardener, an award winning gardening journalist and a regular speaker at gardening clubs and events.

I'm a bit of a horticultural adventurer, embracing diverse challenges such as planting a National Collection, creating a small garden at Chelsea Flower Show and guest presenting on BBC Gardeners' World.

Gardening and writing about gardening have been my whole career.

I have wide ranging practical experience, a broad plant knowledge and an unswerving enthusiasm for all things gardening.

As well as numerous awards for my garden writing, I’ve also won the Relais & Chateaux Garden Trophy for my garden at The Bath Priory Hotel and a Royal Horticultural Society Medal for ‘The Mini Garden’ at Chelsea Flower Show.

I’m also lucky to have worked with famous garden designers including Arne Maynard, Cleve West and Diarmuid Gavin.

My book PLANTING FOR BUTTERFLIES, was published in May 2020, while PLANTING FOR WILDLIFE was published in 2021. My latest books CROPS IN SMALL SPOTS and PLANTING FOR GARDEN BIRDS will be published in 2022.

‘Changing the world through small individual acts of kindness to wildlife’,

Rachel de Thame, on Planting for Wildlife, one of her top choices in The Sunday Times Gardening Books of the Year December 2021

'Delightfully illustrated by James Weston Lewis, this small book packs a mighty punch. It’s not only crammed with information, but quietly persuasive — by the time I’d finished it I had been converted to the idea of making room for some nettles in a corner of my garden.'

Constance Craig Smith in the Daily Mail

'Planting for Butterflies...shows you how you can attract these beautiful insects and help them to flourish by creating a butterfly-friendly garden. If you plant the right plants, the butterflies will surely come.'

The Bath Magazine

'Highly readable and engaging, it is a book you can dip in and out of to improve your knowledge of the natural world in your garden.'

The Middle-Sized Garden Blog

'This book is truly a fascinating read. I know I will be considering creating a flutter as I choose plants for my garden in the future.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to butterflies
Reviewed in the United States on 16 June 2022
I was expecting a book that covered plants and flowers to grow to attract butterflies; it also includes butterfly behaviors, types of butterflies, and other information. Of note this book covers plant and butterfly species mostly native to the UK, but most of the information and plants can be applied to other countries such as the US. Colorful book with beautiful illustrations. Arrived well packaged but with small damage to front cover.
