At the invitation of the Kremlin, Billy Joel took the first large-scale rock tour to the Soviet Union in 1987, performing his greatest hits in Tbilisi, Moscow, and Leningrad as a good-will ambassador to a nation in the throes of change. In doing so, he became one of the powerful cultural influences that brought about the dissolution of that nation. Gorbachev introduced perestroika in 1986 and added glasnost in 1988, so Joel's concerts were of a piece with the new freedoms and opening to the West that transformed the Soviet bloc.

There are several ways to buy the concerts: as a two-cd set, as a DVD or Blu-ray, or in deluxe editions which pair a DVD or Blu-ray with the CDs. The audio recordings present 11 tracks that weren't on the original LP, called simply "Concert," while the deluxe video discs include seven songs not on the original VHS release, entitled "Live From Leningrad," as well as a documentary about the tour. The sound and picture are excellent, as are the performances of Billy and his band. Although he strained his voice a bit early on in the tour, he managed to overcome the problem and put on exciting, energetic shows.

The 75-minute Showtime documentary makes a strong argument for buying one of the deluxe editions. It captures the warmth, intimacy, excitement, and chaos of the tour, offering not only numerous clips from the concerts but also behind-the-scenes activities, a travelogue, and meetings with Russians. The many people involved (family, band, crew, producer, translator, and others) reflect on the pains and pleasures of the experience. Billy took his then-wife Christie Brinkley and baby daughter Alexa along; young Russians embraced them wholeheartedly and they reciprocated the feelings. The deluxe booklet contains new essays and archival photos.

I really enjoyed this set. It takes you back to one of the peaks of Billy Joel's career, and it remains a vital historical document.

Besides the great packaging, the CDs were new with the best sound quality possible considering the concerts were recorded in Russia in 1989.

I recently received an i-phone from my son..and not long thereafter discovered the available gems from Amazon.com! While I am saddened by the demise of the old record store, I am truly jazzed at the available older music that I have discovered..Billy Joel's "The Bridge To Russia" to name one!
This is a must for anyone who is a child of the 60's or 70's, as it will take you back faster than you can say "Travelocity "!!
I listened to the cd's first, as O tend to always save the best for last. The sound and fidelity are FANTASTIC!! "Big Man On Mulberry Street" sounds as if he's playing in front of a full orchestra! The ballads, as beautiful as the day he wrote them. Billy's performance....KICK-ASS!!!!
This guy has ALWAYS given his all, and this show is truly the EPITOME of that!!
The only downside I can find in this "Treasure Box" is that the blu-ray is NOT in 5.1 surround, something I have come to EXPECT when I purchase ANY blu-Ray! But, with that being said, the disc is still great..the video exceptional..and the set-list that I myself would have picked!!
Do yourself a BIG favor this Christmas....follow Billy's advice at the end of every show, and "DON'T take any s*** from anybody"!!....but DO buy yourself this fantastic box set! You'll thank me in the morning!
Merry Christmas, and feel free to let me know if you agree with me.

I loved this documentary!!! In the 80's I was took him for granted as a fan. I liked his music and was a fan, but the radio stations overplayed his music and I started getting sick of hearing Billy Joel on the radio. But watching this documentary really showed me how wrong I was about Billy Joel. This documentary shows how revolutionary he was about making music for the people of all races, religions, and nationalities and sharing it all over the world. The documentary made me cry and rethink how great Billy Joel is and how music should be for everyone to share the beauty of this world. Not enough can be said about this documentary. If your a human who loves music, you should watch this documentary. It is truly beautiful. I was able to buy the movie with the accompanied cd and it was the same music that played in the documentary. Truly all the music in the documentary is fully represented and it does include most of the 70's and 80's hits. Truly wonderful buy. You cannot go wrong with this cd or movie. It represents the 80's well as well as reflects about the current times, and it is truly wonderful.

I wanted to buy the Blu ray of this Billy Joel concert, so I search for it and was first sent to the Multi-Format version for $24.98, which is only the Blu ray of the concert (doesn't include the documentary film) with no DVD or Digital Copy. The version I bought sometimes indicated that includes the Blu ray, but not always, like in my Wishlist or on the main page for the product that it says "The Deluxe Edition, Deluxe Edition, Box Set, 2 CD" and under format only says "Audio CD", so not clear for me what was included (the back cover photo shows the correct product).

Well, it includes 2 CDs and the deluxe Blu ray with the concert and the documentary film for $16.99. So a lot more for less money!!! If looking to buy the Blu ray of the concert this should be the best option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Billy Joel & Band all'apice: uno dei più bei live che abbia mai ascoltato
Reviewed in Italy on November 3, 2014
The Times They Are A-Changin’).
