Editorial Reviews

2014 album from the veteran rocker. KINGS & QUEENS OF THE UNDERGROUND was primarily produced by Trevor Horn, with Greg Kurstin also contributing as a producer to two songs - 'Save Me Now' and the anthemic lead single, 'Can't Break Me Down.' from punk pioneer to global superstar, William Michael Albert Broad - AKA Billy Idol - has left an indelible mark in popular music and remained a household name for over three decades. His style, music, and attitude have transcended time and trends. Billy is the original punk rocker who found a way to take that sneering punk attitude into the pop and rock mainstream, carving out songs that have lasted a lifetime.

Best since Rebel Yell!

Best since Rebel Yell!
Great album from Billy Idol. One of my favorite Billy Idol albums. Steve Stevens' guitar work is fantastic. The songs are sonically diverse and some of the best since Rebel Yell. I went to a guitar clinic featuring Steve Stevens in San Diego and had my copy signed. Every song on the album is good. My favorite tracks are Postcards from the Past, Nothing to Fear, Eyes Wide Shut, Bitter Pill, One Breath Away and Save Me Now. This album has no dead spots. Pick it up! 5 Stars!

Every song well written. Hits. Sound is fantastic. More matute pro sound. Billy has been rocking with his band. He never went away. Him and Alice Cooper are holding solid. Buy this CD!!

I'm a big Billy Idol fan from way back. After all the years past before he put this album out. It was really worth the wait. It's one of my favorites, but can never stop listening to the older albums as well. Love pretty much anything he does. This is a must have.

After only one listen through, I am totally blown away. Usually it takes at least a few times for a new album to make a profound impact on me (if it will at all), but this one hit me right off the bat. I'm a long time Idol fan but have been mostly disappointed by his last few albums. I kept waiting for a weak track to sneak into my listening enjoyment of Kings & Queens of the Underground, but it never came. The production value of this new album is off the charts and musically it is the best Billy has done since Rebel Yell in my humble opinion. His choice of collaborators on this one couldn't have been any better. Let's say it is nearly flawless to my ears among the heaps of trash of new so-called music that is polluting the airwaves leaving a whole generation of kids deaf to classic music. Somehow Billy has been able to make an album that harkens back to the glory days of rock-n-roll but also flourishes with some modernness with jaw dropping hooks, beats and guitar licks. His voice is still amazing. If this one doesn't get air play, then I know that radio is truly dead and buried. Welcome back Billy Idol!

I first experienced Billy Idol through MTV in 1982, age 9, with the videos for "Dancing With Myself" and "White Wedding, Pt.1" They were both in heavy rotation at that time, and I liked both songs, but didn't buy the album. The following year, 1983, it was "Rebel Yell", followed in 1984 with "Eyes Without A Face" and "Flesh For Fantasy", all of which I liked, but didn't buy the album. In late 1986, I saw "To Be A Lover", followed in 1987 by "Don't Need A Gun" and "Sweet Sixteen". I decided in May 1987 to buy "Whiplash Smile", and I now have all of Idol's studio albums.

That being said, it's been hard being an Idol fan the past 20 years. Ever since 1993's "Cyberpunk" debacle, his output has been minimal. I mean, he's only delivered two albums in the past 21 years, 2005's "Devil's Playground" and now 2014's "Kings & Queens Of The Underground". Much has been said about Idol's absence from the charts and radio during that time. Everything from no one noticed he was gone, to he's irrelevant now, to he can't seem to find his musical footing in today's market.

Well, "Kings & Queens" goes a long way towards restoring Idol's musical legacy. The first six tracks are all solid entries, and the last track, "Whiskey And Pills" is solid, too. However, the weakest tracks all come in the second half, and all together--"Eyes Wide Shut", "Ghosts In My Guitar", "Nothing To Fear" and "Love And Glory". Those four almost derail the album, but not quite.

The good stuff really shines here like "Bitter Pill" co-written with Eric Bazillian of The Hooters, produced by Trevor Horn (The Buggles, Yes, Art Of Noise, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Seal, Rod Stewart, etc.), first single, "Can't Break Me Down", "Save Me Now", "One Breath Away", "Postcards From The Past" (with it's "Rebel Yell" references), and the title track, which is one of Idol's most introspective songs (as he tends to typically avoid introspection).

At 59, this is some strong material, and there is evidence that Idol should keep making music. He just needs to polish the some of the filler. He's never really had a five star album in his career, but "Rebel Yell" is considered his top offering. Maybe he has a five star album in him, but he's going to have to come up with a short, 10 song, or 9 song, album with no filler at this point. It would be interesting to see him work with Green Day, Blink 182, No Doubt, Fall Out Boy, Rancid, The Offspring. I think that would make an interesting musical collaboration. Heck, what if Idol worked with Mick Jones (The Clash), John Lydon (Sex Pistols), or what about Iggy Pop or David Bowie? There's some stones left to turn over.

Three and a half stars for a pretty good album, better than 2005's "Devil's Playground" which seemed over-achieving, and overly hard rock, even though it had the winning team of Steve Stevens and Keith Forsey (which was really odd that that album wasn't better).

Here's how "Kings & Queens Of The Underground" compares to Idol's previous works:

    Generation X:

    1978 Generation X: Haven't listened to it.
1979 Valley Of The Dolls: Haven't listened to it.
1979/1981 Sweet Revenge/Kiss Me Deadly: Haven't listened to it.

    Billy Idol:

    1982 Billy Idol: Four Stars
    1983 Rebel Yell: Four Stars
    1986 Whiplash Smile: Four Stars
    1990 Charmed Life: Three Stars
    1993 Cyberpunk: Three Stars
2005 Devil's Playground: Two and Half Stars
2014 Kings & Queens Of The Underground: Three And A Half Stars

I have but one question for you.

    Do you want to rock?

If so, do you want your rock and roll journey led by a seasoned veteran? No, not just a veteran, but one of the formative musicians in the genre?

Well then BUY THIS ALBUM. Heck, buy two, one for each ear. Boys and girls, Billy Idol is back with a vengeance.

Kings and Queens of the Underground hits the ground running and just gets better with each song. Billy has stories to tell here. Things to say. If you've lived a bit, you'll have many of the same stories, and it feels good hearing them set to the kind of rock only Mr. Idol can provide.

But don't get the impression this is stare-at-your-navel ponder it all rock. It isn't.

This is what rock and roll listens to when rock and roll is driving home. Windows down, volume up, open road ahead -- people, this is soundtrack for your life music.

Thank you, Billy Idol, for doing it once again.

I must admit to being a child of the 80's. I didn't know Billy Idol was still making music. I saw this in the digital section and gave it a listen. It was surprisingly good. I would say that his voice sounds about the same. The music at times, takes you back to some of his sounds from his heyday, but at others, it is different. There are 4 or 5 up tempo songs, and the rest are slower ballads etc. Give it a listen if you are a fan of Billy Idol or just liked and miss the nostalgia of the 80's. This album will give you your fix. "Can't Break Me Down" and "Postcards from the Past" are great songs to listen to in the car. Listen to this, give it a chance, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Billy Idol recently released his autobiography and this CD. This may be my favorite of his CDs - the songs are a little different and yet they are 100% Billy Idol and 100% lead guitarist Steve Stevens. Stevens is an incredible guitarist who keeps sounding better if that is possible. Billy? Billy also is better than ever - looks and sounds great whether it is a song that's soft or loud ... and there are songs where you seem to be able to see a glimpse of who he really is. Love the album

If you have read the book, each song will remind you of some part of the book. I am in the process of trying to pick a favorite but I'm still where I love them all. Great CD and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Billy Idol war nie besser!
Reviewed in Germany on May 14, 2021
… jap, richtig gelesen!
