Kid Ink's mixtape hustle, ear for the underground and mainstream, and close connection to a growing fan base helped him achieve a number 20 hit with his independent debut album, Up & Away (2012). Primed for even greater success, the rapper and producer then teamed with major-label RCA for My Own Lane (2014) and Full Speed (2015), higher-charting efforts that showcased his emotive pop-rap with the Top 20 pop hit "Show Me" and three additional platinum singles between them. Since breaking from RCA, he has remained prolific as an indie artist with a busy release schedule of singles and Alive (2021), his fourth studio album.
Born Brian Todd Collins in L.A., Kid Ink rose steadily by releasing four mixtapes in 2010 and 2011. (The first one, World Tour, was credited to his original stage name of Rockstar.) XXL magazine listed him beside the likes of Danny Brown and Macklemore in its Freshman Class feature for 2012. That June, Kid Ink released Up & Away, his first proper studio album, through Tha Alumni. Although the set featured input from numerous producers including Ned Cameron, Jahlil Beats, and Cardiak, there were no guest verses, and therefore no disruptions in Kid Ink's nonchalant flow. Up & Away peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and reached number three on the R&B/hip-hop chart.
After another tape, Kid Ink signed with RCA, made his major-label debut with the Almost Home EP -- a number 27 entry on the Billboard 200 -- and in January 2014 released his number three hit with his second album, My Own Lane. It contained two hit singles featuring Chris Brown. First was "Show Me," Kid Ink's biggest single, a number 13 pop hit that quickly went triple platinum. "Main Chick" didn't trouble the Top 40 but achieved platinum status. Moving fast, the first single off Ink's next album was out only a few months later; "Body Language," a collaboration with Usher and Tinashe, likewise went platinum and built anticipation for the February 2015 arrival of Full Speed. Ink's third album landed at number 14 and produced another platinum hit with "Be Real," on which the rapper was joined by DeJ Loaf. The commercial mixtape Summer in the Winter, produced by DJ Mustard, was offered just before the end of the year, during which Ink also scored a multi-platinum hit as a featured artist on Fifth Harmony's "Worth It."
Kid Ink remained on RCA in 2019, issuing the 2016 tape RSS2, two more EPs, and a slew of non-album singles before he became an independent artist again. He steadily released singles until April 2021 when Alive landed as his fourth studio full-length. All the while, he was also heard as a featured artist on tracks by artists such as Dizzy Wright, Philthy Rich, and EDM producer Tungevaag. Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz occupies the rare intersection between street attitude and mainstream accessibility, rising to the top of the charts without having to water down his smooth-yet-dangerous style. After being active in music for years as part of Playaz Circle, 2 Chainz went solo in 2010. His breakout year was 2012, when he landed on Kanye West's "Mercy" and Nicki Minaj's "Beez in the Trap" before dropping his official debut, Based on a T.R.U. Story, for Def Jam. With three platinum hits -- "No Lie" featuring Drake, "Birthday Song" featuring Kanye West, and "I'm Different" -- the album hit number one on the Billboard 200, and easily reached platinum status. 2 Chainz continued to thrive throughout the next decade. He hit the Top Ten with albums like 2017's Pretty Girls Like Trap Music and 2019's Rap or Go to the League, and in the 2020s has expanded his impressive discography with So Help Me God and 2023's joint effort with Lil Wayne, Welcome to Collegrove. Another major collaboration, Life Is Beautiful with Larry June and the Alchemist, arrived in 2025.
2 Chainz was born Tauheed Epps in College Park, Georgia. After attending Alabama State University on a basketball scholarship, Epps returned to Georgia where he co-founded the Atlanta-based rap group Playaz Circle, performing under the stage name Tity Boi. Playaz Circle became affiliated with Ludacris and signed with Def Jam. Epps first went solo in 2007 with the mixtape Me Against the World. The 2Pac references continued with his 2009 mixtapes Trap-A-Velli and All Ice on Me, but 2010's Me Against the World 2: Codeine Withdrawal hit his style on the nose with the last bit of its title, and when DJ Teknikz and DJ Frank White collected his best street tracks in 2011, the hard and hazy set of cuts was dubbed the Codeine Cowboy mixtape. That same year he was featured on David Banner's "Yao Ming" and Big K.R.I.T.'s "Money on the Floor." By this point, he had dropped the Tity Boi moniker, opting for the more family-friendly 2 Chainz.
In 2012 he was featured on Kanye West's "Mercy" and Nicki Minaj's "Beez in the Trap," then released his official debut, Based on a T.R.U. Story, for Def Jam. The album featured three hits ("No Lie" featuring Drake, "Birthday Song" featuring Kanye West, and "I'm Different") and hit number one on the album charts, reaching platinum status. Other guests included Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and Mike Posner, while production was handled by the likes of the-Dream and Drumma Boy. Following later announcements that 2 Chainz had been working on new material with Pharrell Williams and Drake, a sequel, B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time, arrived in September 2013. The album featured the hits "Feds Watching" and "Where U Been." 2 Chainz was also heard on singles from B.o.B ("Headband"), Major Lazer ("Bubble Butt"), and Juicy J ("Bandz a Make Her Dance") that year. In 2016, after additional featured appearances, he released "Feel Like Cappin'" along with the album ColleGrove, a collaboration with Lil Wayne, although only 2 Chainz was credited due to label issues. By the end of the busy year, he had dropped a handful of additional mixtapes and debuted the Drake-assisted single "Big Amount." Led by the hit "Good Drank," featuring Quavo and Gucci Mane, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, his fourth proper album for Def Jam, arrived in 2017. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B and Hip-Hop charts. 2 Chainz followed with appearances on tracks by Steve Aoki ("Without U"), Jeezy ("Floor Seats"), Eminem ("Chloraseptic [Remix]"), and Migos ("Too Playa"). In early 2018, he issued his fourth EP, The Play Don't Care Who Makes It (Def Jam), featuring appearances by YG and Offset. The EP proved to be a sleeper, entering the Billboard charts two years later. Early 2019 saw 2 Chainz team up with Ariana Grande for the single "Rule the World," which appeared on the full-length Rap or Go to the League, which arrived later that March.
In 2020, 2 Chainz presented No Face No Case, a showcase for his label/collective T.R.U. The mixtape included both individual performances and collaborations between 2 Chainz and the core artists on the label. Before 2020 was up, he'd released his sixth studio album So Help Me God, preceded by lead single "Money Maker" in August of 2020 -- its projected September release date was delayed by sample clearance issues. So Help Me God was ultimately released in November of 2020, entering the Billboard 200 at number 15 with a plethora of big-name guests including Lil Wayne, Kevin Gates, Kanye West, Rick Ross, and Lil Uzi Vert. Several non-album tracks followed 2021, and in February 2022, he offered his seventh proper album, Dope Don't Sell Itself. Declared his last trap full-length, it peaked at number 23 with help from preview singles featuring 42 Dugg and Moneybagg Yo. Later that year he contributed the cut "2 Step" to the House Party 2 soundtrack. Next, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne reunited for Welcome to Collegrove, a sequel to 2016's Collegrove. The album was released in November of 2023 on Def Jam and included a guest feature from Benny the Butcher.
