Eat My Schwartz: Our Story of NFL Football, Food, Family, and Faith Hardcover – September 6, 2016

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 46 ratings

The first Jewish brothers in the NFL since 1923 take readers inside their lives and into the locker rooms in a revealing book on football, food, family, and faith.

Geoff and Mitchell Schwartz are the NFL’s most improbable pair of offensive linemen. They started their football careers late, not playing a down of organized football until they joined their low-key high school program. Despite all that, they wound up at top-tier college programs and became the first Jewish brothers in the league since 1923.

In
Eat My Schwartz, Geoff and Mitch talk about the things that have made them the extraordinary people that they are: their close-knit and supportive family, their Jewish faith and traditions, their love of the game and drive for excellence and, last but not least, the food they love to eat, whether at home or on the road. Theirs is an inspiring story not just for every football fan but for everybody wanting to figure out what it takes for dreams to come true―and how to stay well-fed throughout the process.

Review

"An outstanding book . . . . Powerful and at times emotional . . . . The book is humorous, smart and takes you inside NFL locker rooms. . . . This was, easily, one of the most unique and well-done books about NFL life I've ever read. And unlike a lot of football books, it actually gives you a good look inside NFL life." ―Mike Freeman, Bleacher Report

Heartwarming & informative story of what it takes to make it in the NFL and in life. The Schwartz brothers describe a lifestyle of grueling workouts, strict diet, travel, and extensive mental preparation for the next “battle,” while trying to balance family and faith. Oh, and their other love – food.
The boys write in a fun, easy to read style that is always interesting. The technical parts of playing offensive line in the NFL took me back to "Instant Replay," Jerry Kramer's epic chronicle of the Green Bay Packer 1967 championship season - & that's high praise indeed.
A couple of interesting things I learned: Geoff & Mitch are the first Jewish brothers to play in the NFL since 1923 (since Ralph & Arnold Horween) and although they played against each other in 2014 (Chiefs vs. Browns) that is the only time during overlapping NFL careers that they were ever able to see each other during the regular season (so far).

The Schwartz brothers (Geoff and Mitch) seem much different than the average professional athletes. They are humble, unassuming, and firmly based in family and their Jewish faith. All of that comes through in this book. It is full of personal stories of family, success, failure, and injury, and all done in a conversational and endearing style.

Mitch and Geoff each write in their own words the stories about football, family and faith. First one writes, then the other (sometimes it's hard to remember which brother's writing you are reading) in each chapter. Each's story compliments the other, and the two stories together give an overall vision of that particular point in time.

They each own up to their shortcomings, credit their family and their faith for getting them through difficult times, and give an inside look into an NFL locker room that fans will find enlightening and interesting.

Found this to be engaging, entertaining, thought-provoking, and thoroughly enjoyable. Should appear to any NFL fan, especially those who have played on the offensive line!

Nice, breezy account of the first set of Jewish brothers to play major league football since the 1920s. Geoff and Mitch Schwartz are very nice sounding young men who did not really start playing football until high school, and even then they were more into basketball and baseball than football. They are both big men physically and currently play offense for their respective teams (Geoff as a guard with the Lions, Mitch as a tackle with the Chiefs). The love and respect they have for their parents and for each other shines through every chapter. I have read several books on different football players and so many have records of very troubled lives that started in high school and continue on into their careers. The Schwartz brothers remind me of the Mannings in the closeness to their family and their sense of humour. They do touch on their Jewish faith, but more on their shared hobby of cooking. The book includes several recipes.

I think this would be an excellent book to give as a gift to a young man interested in playing football, and also for one who may need encouragement in over coming a speech impediment, as Geoff relates. This is not a literary memoir but rather told in a manner reminiscent of a detailed television interview or a long conversation on a road trip. Nothing that would intimidate a reluctant reader but would give inspiration through the lives of genuine and success young men.

I love the brothers and they are very successful and personable. I expected a more compelling story but what I got was a lesson in being big, skilled and Jewish and but not fun.
