Editorial Reviews
2015 release from multi-platinum selling, Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), along with musical partner Soulsavers. Entitled Angels & Ghosts, this is the collaborators' second album, following their critically-acclaimed 2012 release The Light the Dead See. The album boasts nine original tracks, all written by Dave Gahan and Soulsavers. An evolution from their first album, Angels & Ghosts proves to be a markedly stronger and more hard-hitting body of work. Listeners can expect to be led through an aural mix of dark, brooding sounds, elements inspired by gospel and blues, and the stark beauty that has become a signature of Dave and Soulsavers' works. Dave Gahan's emotionally powerful voice has never sounded better, and drives the album forward over a landscape of meticulously crafted instrumentation.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2015“Angels and Ghosts” marks the second collaboration between Soulsavers and Dave Gahan. This comes following their 2012 album, “The Light the Dead See”, which was a very haunting and spiritual journey. I found the album fantastic. So how does “Angels and Ghosts” stand as a sophomore album?
I first have to note that the first single from “Angels and Ghosts” is the song “All of this and Nothing”. I have to say that when I first heard this track I fell in love immediately, the drums, the guitars, the strings, the back vocals and of course Gahan’s vocals. This is the first song I can honestly say I felt I have heard before. This is not to say it is a copy or a rip off, but this message and tune was like going home. I am so sorry if that comes across maudlin, but I can’t think of another way to describe this feeling. In addition, this is the first song that has ever, ever almost brought me to tears. I am really not an over emotional person, but this track is seriously one of the best songs I have heard in a long time.
Now that I am finish confessing my love for the lead single, is the rest of the album as good? I would say yes. Musically the “Angels and Ghosts” doesn’t depart too much from the sound or theme of that from “The Light the Dead See”. In other words, the album is dripping with spiritual imagery, blues, neo-gospel and flares of post-rock. The only difference is I see is as a body of work, this album isn’t quite as dark as its predecessor. Think of songs being played in the graveyard next to a church.
I would have to say that Dave Gahan sounds amazing. His voice is as sharp and strong as ever. I really get the feeling he didn’t hold back and put everything into these songs. As for his song writing (yes, he wrote the lyrics to all the tracks) they are solid. I grow tired of folks comparing him to Martin Gore. Gahan’s lyrics are very powerful, somewhat simplistic and I think a bit thought provoking. The lyric “Move in from the dark”, from “All of This and Nothing” is extremely powerful given the context of the song. As for Soulsavers, look these guys are awesome. Rich and Ian have nothing to be ashamed of. These gentlemen create some beautiful soundscapes.
As for highlight tracks, “You Owe Me”, “One Thing”, “My Sun” and “Tempted” are very strong. Truthfully, the album only has nine songs and runs about thirty-eight minutes, so these songs don’t really over stay their welcome. I have read some complaints that this album musically doesn’t sound different from the TLTDS. I have to say, I see it as a second part of the same journey. It is nice to see artists go against the grain and do their own thing. I find this music wonderful. However, if there is a third collaboration between Gahan and Soulsavers, I would be interested to hear their sound go in a different direction.
On a closing note, the album sleeve was done by Gahan’s teenage daughter. It is an interesting image, at times I feel it matches the album perfectly and other times seem a bit loud. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with this record and will playing it until Gahan gets back to his day job with Depeche Mode.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2015The collaboration between Gahan and Soulsavers really soars. It's a bit maddening to read reviews from people who want Gahan circa 1990. People grow, the world changes. I enjoyed the single, "All of This and Nothing," but, for me, the highlight of the album is "Lately," a dark, existential meditation with ominous undertones. Like the previous album, "Angels & Ghosts" is wrapped in religious imagery, loneliness, and contemplative rhythms that are as soothing as they are unsettling. I would be remiss if I did not mention that I stumbled upon Soulsavers via Mark Lanegan (Blues Funeral) which led me to "It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land." Would love to see them do a more extensive tour than NY-LA-Paris-London-Berlin (although I understand). One can hope. For now I'll have to settle for the YouTube video of their set in Los Angeles from 2012.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2018Die hard DM fan here who used to wonder if their lead singer could survive without the legacy of Martin, Andy and others. All doubts erased. If he had no real skill this album wouldn't have survived one listening with me. ;) As a Christian I find some of DM's lyrics difficult to appreciate - but their sounds and melodies always go down well. But this combo of artists made me fully appreciate nearly every offering on this album. Now I'll need to see what else Mr Gahan's been up to...
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2015Dave Gahan has been a one man music making machine. In the recent past since he began releasing solo albums, he has been remarkably consistent for well over a decade, alternating releases of solo albums and Depeche Mode albums every 2 years. This new album is heavy on filler material that takes the bulk of the second half. The real heavy hitters are the at the beginning of the album. My favorites are "Shine", which continues where Delta Machine's Heaven left off, while "Tempted" and "All of this & Nothing" fight for lynchpin rights.
Tempted in particular is my highlight, Dave Gahan's voice as graceful as ever, the baritone ever present, and it has an infectious hook to it. Definitely one of Mr Gahan's most beautiful songs.
If you're a DM fan (and a Dave Gahan fan) you will buy this and enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2016Amazing! Fantastic! I could go on an on. I am a huge Depeche Mode fan so of course I keep current on the individual works of Dave and Martin Gore. Angels & Ghosts was so much more than I ever could have imagined. The depth of the lyrics and the soulfulness of the music sent me on a musical journey that any David Gahan fan would be happy to go on.
Many times the solo works of an artist that has spent a lifetime in a band are not overly impressive...that certainly is not the case with this album.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2019David Gahan of Depeche mode provides 3/4 of their legendary sounds and vocals.
This outing however is something of a different sound for the man.
It is a real soul pouring adventure. It is mature and hearty sounding collection of guitar laden testimonials.
you already know if you love the man, that you will indeed need this deep album.
A must for fans
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2015This is a worthy successor to Soulsavers' phenomenal album with Dave Gahan, The Light The Dead See. The spiritual searching and melancholy suit his voice, lyrics and melodies beautifully. Better produced than their work with Mark Lanegan, this album has every bit the same integrity and richness.
I assume Dave Gahan's name comes first on this album, so they will sell more copies. They deserve to, it's great work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buena compra.
Miguel Angel Valdelamar SotoBuena compra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy rápido el envío y buen embalaje!
