118. Happily ever after

118. Happily ever after
First all-new studio offering since 2012, and after giving birth to a baby boy just recently, "Storyteller" finds Carrie Underwood at her most experimental. Along with her steady collaborator Mark Bright, and with 2 new producers, who help push her into new sonic realms, on here she is exploring soul, southern-rock, R'n'B, and pop, pushing the boundaries unlike ever before, but retaining the country feel that is always the most distinctive feature in her music. With hardly a weak track, this is arguably her strongest record to date. Whether it is upbeat tracks such as opener "Renegade runaway", the sassy "Dirty laundry", and the rocky "Church bells" (3 fine examples of tour-de-force storytelling), or midtempos such as the Sam Hunt-assisted "Heartbeat", "Like I'll never love you again" (one of the most glorious love songs in her catalogue), "The girl you think I am", an almost acoustic, guitar and piano track, dedicated to her father, and the closing "What I never knew I always wanted", about her newborn baby. And more varied tracks like the poppier "Chaser", and "Clock don't stop", or "Choctaw County affair", a bluesy, gospel-tinged narrative about a murder trial, and "Relapse", an addiction-related song whose slow verses build up to a soaring chorus. Quite literally, the album feels like the musical equivalent of storytime. Lyrically fleshed out with great effect, musically innovative, incorporating influences from a variety of genres, and exhibiting her most evocative vocals so far, "Storyteller" has all that requires to become a classic in its genre. Regardless of claims that CU is not country enough, her voice and stories have always been rooted in country tradition. This record shows how she has evolved since her American Idol days, while still remaining true to her country spirit. In my review of her greatest-hits album last year, I said that there is something very likeable about Carrie Underwood, and her music. With this new album, I appreciate her more as an artist, and like her even more as a person.

This is a fantastic album! I love the concept behind it and the fresh, new, country-twang sound Carrie implements throughout the entire album. As is always the case with Carrie's albums, every single track is lyrically captivating and very relatable. 😊 Each song really does tell an invigorating, powerful story, which hits you every time you hear them, often times opening up a line or stanza you didn't think much about before but heard this time around and provokes some thoughts that you didn't have before hearing her new album. I love that about her. She has an incredible gift for songwriting, which only gets better and stronger with each album. I love the complexity behind her songs -- whether written by her or given to her as a demo and is then included on her album. I really admire Carrie for the integrity she brings about in all she does, but specifically when it comes to recording. She does not allow any corrections or enhancements to be made electronically on any of her songs, so they perform them and re-record them until she's happy with it and so are her producers. That's rare in most artists. But Carrie also comes to recording sessions ready to go and almost always NAILS it on the first recording -- a compliment she's been given by everyone she's collaborated with and a trait that very few artists pull off right off the bat. This is why it boggles my mind that she is consistently beaten out of the "Female Vocalist of the Year" awards by Miranda Lambert, who has openly stated what an incredible vocalist Carrie is!

Carrie is absolutely at the top of her game -- still -- and it's her superhuman vocals that you become a part of the song and a part of the story, just in listening to her perfectly placed inflections and her range of vocals, you are immediately transported into the song and the story that goes with it. She sets the perfect tone of the story in all her songs, just in the sheer depth of emotion in her voice she uses to navigate us all through her stories. And like it was with her powerhouse vocals on the Blown Away album, Carrie takes on a whole different persona in each and every song, making them all individual and unique journeys, life lessons, victories, tragedies, or messages of hope and inspiration that we ALL need to hear. I love how down-to-earth and authentic Carrie is. It's because of her committed promise to be real and stay real, along with her desire to connect with, relate to, comfort, reassure, uplift and commiserate with her fans that she has been consistently so successful with each album, each song, each tour, each performance, each award. Carrie is every bit as "human" as the rest of us, which shines through brilliantly in every interaction she has -- whether it be with her fans, her peers in the country genre, her interviewers, the media, her band, her song-writing collaborators, her husband, her family, her friends -- she is the same person, which is crucial for anyone in the music industry. Carrie's fanbase increases exponentially because she's authentic and consistent. Her fans know what to expect from her because it never changes with her. The opposite of that notion is what ends a lot of music careers, in my opinion. Artists often feel they have to evolve in some way or change their writing style or type of music based on what's currently trending and what's winning awards, but what they don't realize is that their fans will follow them and support them for the artists they originally were -- not what's on the top of the charts for that week.

All that to say, Carrie's new album is fabulous!! She continues to outdo herself as she raises the bar higher and higher for herself with each new single and each new album. If you haven't gotten it yet, you need to buy it! "Storyteller" is going to be the album everyone wants for Christmas...🎄🌟🎁🎀🎅👼❄⛄❄ And everyone should get. 😊😊😊 I give this album an emphatic 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟!! Long live Carrie Underwood and the endless talent she possesses and continually expands upon! Can't wait to see Carrie perform the tracks from "Storyteller" live next year when she's on tour, along with all the awards her sensational new album warrants nominations for! Maybe this will be the album with Carrie's golden ticket. She is way overdue for some Entertainer of the Year nominations and wins, and has yet to be properly recognized for her innate songwriting capabilities, which have garnered some of the best songs on her albums and in the country genre overall!

So, here's to you, Mama Bear Carrie! We (your loyal fans and fan club members!) *adore* you and are thrilled beyond words with the release of your 5th album, the songs it contains, and the tour that will ensue! You deserve every award, every title, every acknowledgement and all the favorable reviews this world has to offer! Congratulations to you and Mike on the birth of your adorable little man this year! (Yes, I'm aware that Carrie will probably never see this, but I don't care. I'm writing it to her, as if she might, anyway. 😜 Hey, you never know what she Googles when little baby Isaiah is awake all night from teething and she's looking up random stuff to keep herself entertained and awake while coddling and comforting him, right?)

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album.

I've noticed a pattern in her other albums, with songs that can be categorized broadly, roughly in the following:
    1. The sassy bad-girl song (Last Name, Undo It, Cupid's Got a Shotgun)
    2. The catchy song about the bad boy (Before He Cheats, Cowboy Casanova, Good Girl)
    3. The heartbreak/goodbye song (Starts with Goodbye, I Know You Won't, Someday When I Stop Loving You, Good in Goodbye)
    4. The upbeat song about boys (The More Boys I Meet, Leave Love Alone, Songs Like This)
And I can go on. Of course, this doesn't, in any way, make her albums less good - it just makes them a bit more predictable and familiar. She did change things up a bit with Blown Away, but the type of songs remained largely the same despite some difference in the musical production of Blown Away, See You Again, etc. There were also a few filler songs that weren't really necessary.

Storyteller maintains the same wholesome music that Carrie Underwood has always performed, but adds more variety. What surprised me, however, is that this is her only album thus far where the ballads seemed to be less memorable, and even blend together after a while. On Play On, for example, they're the strongest part of the album.

Now I'll do a quick rundown of the songs:

    1. Renegade Runaway 4.5/5
Thematically reminiscent of Carrie's other girl-power songs, but the melody is addictive and a great way to introduce the album.
    2. Dirty Laundry 5/5
My favorite song on the album. The rhythm is insanely catchy, and it has just the right amount of attitude.
    3. Church Bells 5/5
A bit more country rock, and reminds me a little bit of See You Again.
    4. Heartbeat 4/5
Intensely romantic, and I can see why others love this song. It's pure Carrie, with a slightly varied production style.
    5. Smoke Break 3/5
This song is interesting because it isn't exactly like Carrie's other songs, but it's still true to her work. It's pretty serious without being a love ballad, and it's country without being too gritty. Not my favorite, but it seems like a staple song in the album. Definitely not a filler song.
    6. Choctaw Country Affair 5/5
The chorus is different and a ton of fun, and the song overall is a feel-good country tune that shows off a different side to Carrie. Same sass, but it just got a lot more interesting.
    7. Like I'll Never Love You Again 4/5
Pretty ballad, but not too memorable.
    8. Chaser 3/5
Again more rock than pop, and deals with the pain of letting a lover leave you for another girl. I like the change in tempo, but the song itself didn't blow me away.
    9. Relapse 5/5
My second favorite song on the album. So powerful, and the chorus builds in a way that makes you almost hold your breath a little. Sure, she's used the metaphor of addiction to love before, but this is the best incarnation yet.
    10. Clock Don't Stop 3.5/5
Another solid song. Focuses on the passing of time and incorporates a tick-tock beat into the chorus. Again, I appreciate the variety even if it's not actually a stand-out song in any way.
    11. The Girl You Think I Am 2/5
I was not very interested by this song, although her voice shines beautifully in it. The lyrics and melody just don't seem memorable at all, and the other ballads are better. I think they should have chosen either Heartbeat or this song, but not both.
    12. Mexico 4/5
Also a bit different, and I really like the adventure element that ties back nicely to Renegade Runaway. It also makes me visualize the wide plains and skies of North America in the same way that Smoke Break does.
    13. What I Never Knew I Always Wanted 5/5
Now this is the ballad I was expecting to love and enjoy. Great song, because it's full of heart and a bit of fragility, which I think was necessary after all the power songs and strong instrumentation. Doesn't show weakness, however, and that's why it's a great way to finish the album.

If I could sum up her songs in a few key words, they'd be: love, faith, encouragement, sass, and storytelling. This album in particular definitely delivered on that last one. The music had more variety and was never boring, but didn't stray from Carrie's trademark love ballad/feisty country combination. My overall ratings for the songs might average out to 4 stars, but the strong narrative element (in nearly all the songs on the album) makes the CD stronger as a whole, and it's really enjoyable to listen to the whole thing through.
Favorites: Renegade Runaway, Dirty Laundry, Choctaw County Affair, and Relapse. (Surprising considering my favorites on her other albums are all ballads!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Tolles Album!
Reviewed in Germany on April 24, 2020
2015 veröffentlichte Carrie Underwood ihr fünftes Album "Storyteller".

    1. Renegade runaway 4,5/5

Toll!

    7. Like I'll never love you again 5/5

    11. The girl you think I am 5/5

    13. What I never knew I always wanted 5/5
