Editorial Reviews

This is the highly anticipated follow-up to her 2015 album, which garnered praise from American Songwriter, Huffington Post and CMT Edge. Weightless delivers bold, thick pop with rock-and-roll edges. The starkly personal lyrics explore complexities & dysfunction of relationships. Her award-winning songwriting is stronger than ever. Producer Bill Reynolds, (Band of Horses bassist, also produced Avett Brothers) helps embrace a lush pop-rock approach, which marks a musical evolution for Longley.

A Bold Step Forward Towards Mass Appeal
5 out of 5 stars
A Bold Step Forward Towards Mass Appeal
Liz has straddled the line between modern folk and pop music for most of her recording career, which goes back almost a decade. Her first 3 indie albums (especially Hot Loose Wire) made use of modest, or minimal production to good effect. Her songwriting and amazing voice were the focal points. When she was signed by Sugar Hill, a major label specializing in Americana artists (and recently merged with Rounder Records, home label of Alison Krauss and Sierra Hull), her profile was given a huge boost with the 2015 self-titled album, as well as a shift towards a more commercially-viable pop sound. With Weightless, Liz has jumped fully into the realm of mainstream pop-rock music, not that that's a bad thing - just a different approach to arrangements, instrumentation and production style. Her highly personal, heartfelt lyrics and soaring vocals are intact, but those attributes are now backed by a more muscular sound that makes use of a full ensemble of musicians and thickly-layered production values. (This contrasts to labelmates Sarah Jarosz and Sierra Hull, who have embraced a more stripped-down minimalist style in their latest releases this year.)Liz and her crew are going for the Big Time in a Big Way. After 10 years on the fringes of stardom, with a small but growing loyal fan base, she's on the cusp of being a true breakout artist with this new album that's as bold and appealing as anything Sheryl Crow has done.Having gone to see her live in concert several times since 2010, I'm rooting for her success - she has more than earned it.

I have been a huge Liz Longley fan for many years, ever since I saw her perform in Franklin, MA. I remember talking with other folks there waiting for the show to start, and they had driven from Maine to see her, at least two hours. My husband and I were hooked right from the start. She has a magical aura, an adorable personality, and undeniable talent. She has been my favorite singer since, and I never tire of hearing her songs. Having seen her so many times live, between local venues and Concert Window, I had heard most of the songs on Weightless, but I hadn't heard them as they are recorded on this album. The songs, of course, didn't have the same intimate sound with just Liz, her voice, and a piano or a guitar - the sound that I had been used to and had loved so much. At first, it sounded a bit over-produced as a result. But I listened again and again, and now I appreciate them as they are, still beautiful, still Liz, just "bigger" and more commercial sounding, which is something I think will help to finally get Liz the broader, bigger audience she deserves. I can imagine nearly every song on this album being used on some TV soundtrack or enhancing some dramatic scene, romantic montage or video. Liz's music has always been so visual, so visceral, and to me so essential. I can't imagine life without it, since it has enriched my life so much. I highly recommend this album and all of her earlier work. And if you like her and ever get a chance to see her live or catch one of her shows on Concert Window I bet you'll feel the same. Give it a listen (I recommend head phones and closed eyes - really listening). But beware of earworms.

"Weightless" by Liz Longley is her second Sugar Hill release and leapfrogs over the excellent self-titled CD that came before. The first track, "Swing," has great movement on the chorus with Longley's impassioned vocals moving from confinement to freedom, "Can't settle me down or make me stand still; Can't hold me back, nobody ever will." The title track is a quintessential breakup song with Longley soaring and dipping on vocals between verse and chorus, "You can have the couch, the lamp, the diamond ring." "Say Anything You Want" shifts from Longley's Americana past into rock territory that one professional review compared to Neil Young & Crazy Horse, "You can run your mouth; you try to pull me down but I'm gonna tune you out." The slow aching ballad "Rescue My Heart" has been used on "Switched at Birth" (ABC) and "Scream" (MTV). "Never Really Mine" is another slower song that shows the beauty of Longley's voice as she agonizes through the retrospective of a romantic breakup. The set closer "Oxygen" has grown on me so much since I first started spinning this disc. It's a bit of a sleeper, starting off slowly, almost atmospherically, but brings us to romantic hope, "Inhaling every kiss you give me takes me high, tasting what it's like to be alive." Longley is getting better and better, an artist you do not want to miss! Enjoy!

I first saw Liz in Salt Lake City as the opening act for another artist. Her charisma and instrumental/vocal prowess as she effortlessly lilted from note-to-note wowed me. I left that evening with an autographed copy of her wonderful acoustic "Hot Loose Wire", where her 'unplugged' vocal and instrumental awesomeness soars. I then purchased her amazing self-titled "Liz Longley" album with more production and instrumentation, and the same incredible Liz lyrics and vocals. I loved it just as much . . . even more. I've been anticipating the release of "Weightless" for some time due to great social media promotion by Liz and her label. Since two days before the official release, when PopMatters.com started streaming "Weightless", I've listened to it continuously in my office all day. "Weightless" is typical Liz, but another notch higher, with the same heartfelt lyrics and passionate vocal performances I've come to expect from her. You can't go wrong with this album. "Weightless" is a heavy hitter!

Having just discovered Liz this week, my excitement that a new album was coming out so soon after I heard my first song from her was over the top. Having listened to it on repeat for the last 24 hours, I can't begin to describe how much I love it. Her voice makes me feel comfort and familiarity almost right away, and this album has such an amazing mix of pop and country influences. Swing and Weightless are such a great start to the entire thing, and every song after just helps tell this amazing tale.
I honestly love this album, and look forward to more music from Liz in the future. This will definitely keep me invested in her music going forward.

Liz Longley takes off on a weightless journey of a new life, this being her best work to date, even surpassing her amazing Hot Loose Wire album.

I first saw Liz perform about 5 years ago, and this album represents a maturity of talent and experiences. From the album title Weightless about relationships ending in materialistic priorities to the lovely What's The Matter, as we all want the same thing from relationships, how can it be that difficult? Liz explores the reflections of past relationships in Never Really Mine and explores the sustained sparks in Electricity. She is a master lyricist and an incredible singer - this album is a must have!!!

I love, love, love this album! I have been anticipating this release since first hearing Liz Longley sing "Weightless" live in 2014. If you ever get the opportunity to hear Liz Longley live, do not miss out! Liz is a brilliant songwriter, an amazing vocalist and has become my favorite artist since first hearing "When You've Got Trouble" in 2013. Every song on this new album is relatable and incredible! Produced by Bill Reynolds (Band of Horses), a collaboration that created what is, in my opinion, the best album of 2016!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bellissima voce
Reviewed in Italy on June 18, 2018

Great album, and finally a vinyl release from Liz Longley!

The production is terrific, the musicians involved top notch and the songs are built to last.

But Sugar Hill Records also includes 2 Vinyl exclusive Bonus Tracks not on CD or iTunes.

All lyrics are also included with this heavy weight, 140g vinyl release.
