Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The Light Princess is Tori Amos' first musical, which debuted to great critical acclaim at the National Theatre in 2013. The musical is a dark fairy tale about grief, rebellion and the power of love based on a 19th century fairy tale. The album features the original London cast, recorded entirely under studio conditions and, as a special bonus two songs from the musical are performed and recorded by Tori herself for the very first time.
Review
Amos s score has its own pulsating beauty, as if Philip Glass had been commissioned to score Cinderella. --New York Times
Driven by Tori Amos s music, this fairy tale soars --Financial Times
Huge triumph --The Huffington Post

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2021Tori Amos is a genius - her versatility and surrounding herself with just as talented and gifted people - has out-created this work. you can hear the synergy and allows the listener, the audience (well at least it does me) allows for me to insert myself or create my own narrative within this story. its not your typical musical, but i do believe even the most purest of MT critic would find aspects time well spent.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2015I think this album is stunning. The entire cast is extremely talented. The music went beyond my expectations for Tori Amos, though I had total faith in her ability to bring out something amazing. I think that some of the strongest moments are when the full cast is involved - which reveals just how complex Tori's music is when writing for multiple voice ranges.
I had read critics reviews of the musical talking about "forgettable music". Really? "My Own Land", "Gravity" and "Amphibiava" certainly stick in my head. This is a delight to add to my collective works of Tori Amos.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2016I am not much of a musical fan, but I like them from time to time. I listened to this on a whim, as a bit of a Tori Amos fan, and was very impressed. The music and story is so interesting! You can listen to the soundtrack from start to finish without having read the book or without hearing the rest of the dialogue, and it's fairly easy to grasp. It makes me want to watch the musical itself.
A "Wicked" fan would probably love this. Similar type of story and music.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2015I'm still warming to this show. I didn't see it live, so it's harder to learn, but the CD has a lovely booklet and full lyrics with a great introduction to the musical. It's nice to hear the accomplished cast on this recording. One thing to note: this is an Original Cast Recording with music written by Tori Amos (and two bonus tracks sung by Ms. Amos herself.) Slightly pedestrian lyrics were written by both Tori Amos and Samuel Adamson and the story is based on a fairy tale. The show is performed by the original London cast. Rosalie Craig, the accomplished actress & singer, sings the lead role with real beauty. She and Nick Hendrix play the two leads. If you're looking for the latest "Tori Amos album", this may not be what you're looking for unless you are a die-hard fan. If you're a fan of musical theatre, it may be more suited to your taste. I'm both - so I love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2015This musical is a stunning debut for Tori Amos! The two year wait for this album to come out was absolutely worth it. Awe inspiring performances from Rosalie Craig and Nick Hendrix and thrilling work from the entire company. The score really comes to life. The digital booklet included has stunning shots of the show. Really hoping this one comes to New York and has a life on Broadway. A unique spin on fairy tales and a varied score. I am so happy with this album!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2016Not my favorite but I love Tori so I had to buy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2015Better than good
I am one who hasn't seen the stage production and has been waiting patiently for years to catch an ear glimpse of this musical. After a listen or two, I have fallen head over heels. The performances are flawless and bold, especially Althea, played by Rosalie Craig. The music has catchy complex melodies (that we have come to expect from Amos). My favorites are Highness in the Sky, queen material, my own land, and darkest hour. Please bring it to Broadway!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2015This is a great album if you are a fan of Tori Amos and musicals. She wrote the music for The Light Princess. The songs are beautiful and her piano work is impeccable. The cast also have wonderful voices. I can listen to the albums over and over again to follow along with the story and always notice something new. I really hope the show comes to the United States (Washington D.C. please) so I can see it in person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Läuft in Dauerschleife...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots to like
This is a very enjoyable listen. A lot of good music, clever lyrics in places, strong performances, and still a familiar sound for fans. Best of all it's a great story and the music does a terrific job of matching the mood, tension, and pace of the plot throughout. The lyrics can get a bit clumsy in some places, and sure, some tunes are maybe weaker than others and definitely wouldn't work in any other context, but overall it's a great addition to your library and these minor gripes are easily forgotten. I haven't been this impressed with her music in probably 12 or 13 years, maybe ever? Side note, as a male, it's interesting and new to hear men sing to Tori's music.
I think the physical packaging, notes, and images really complements the music and helps the listener engage in the story. Worth buying the CD instead of just downloading.
For me, the character Piper steals the show.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bueeeeeeno

5.0 out of 5 stars très bon CD
Très belle musique et très bon chanteurs, en particulier Clive Rowe qui est excellent! Le reste est également très bien ficelé.
