A DARK FAMILY SECRET

AN ISLAND CUT OFF
But when she receives an anonymous letter containing a photograph of a refurbished gothic guesthouse surrounded by water, and an invitation to stay, old memories fight to resurface.
Alice has visited before. She is certain of it.
WHO WILL SURVIVE?
Convinced the clues to her past lie at the hotel, she checks in. But once on the island, a wild storm rages, waves crash violently into the rocks, and the house is cut off by the roaring sea.
Then two guests are found dead. And the hotel owner is missing. Will Alice ever uncover her secret past?
And will anyone leave the island alive?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2024This is one of those books that had me going, wait what?! Multiple times. So many twists and turns and just weird things happening (because of it being a creepy house), but also just in general with people acting strangely.
The Island House follows Alice and how she deals with the death of her father. His death brings back old memories and a time that she doesn't remember much about at all. Along with those memories are these images of a creepy old house that keeps popping up in her life, and she seems to have some memory of it but no real reason as to why she has these memories. When she is invited to this place, she decides to go and see if it can bring back any other memories and possibly bring her closer to the secrets her father was keeping from her. Along with her she decides to bring her ex-boyfriend who she has been reconnecting with after realizing that they still care about each other.
Overall this book will keep you enthralled and needing to know what's going to happen to Alice and the others at this new hotel that is inside the creepy house. It takes them all on an adventure that they wanted no part of it and makes them remember things from their past. The twist at the end was one that I was not expecting and had me truly shocked! So much sadness and pain in these people's lives and the things just keep happening or being found out. I highly recommend to anyone who likes creepy atmosphere books, with a side of drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
Wow, what a roller-coaster read, I loved everything about this story - the Gothic hotel on the island, the mysterious characters, even the creepy puppets! I was rooting for Alice throughout and on the edge of my seat when the dead bodies began turning up. The dual timeline worked brilliantly and the twist was unexpected. A gripping, chilling and addictive thriller I found hard to put down. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Island House.
The Island House, by Amanda Brittany immediately reminded me of Agatha Christie's And then There Were None, which was Inspired by The hotel on Burgh island in Devon. Amanda's imaginary Seafield island in Suffolk is almost a clone! That being said, the story itself although similar in concept is brilliantly thought out and is a compelling read from start to finish! If you like a good murder mystery with twists I highly recommend it. A great story with great characters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
'But now Alice must come first, and he would keep her safe until the day he died.'
Well, I certainly loved this!
At first it seemed predictable, but how wrong was I. Each one of my assumptions turned out to be wrong. Credit to the author there.
This was a fast paced, brilliantly written and very twisty psychological thriller. 5*, and I have just found another favourite author.

3.0 out of 5 stars An outrageously contrived plot - but still an enjoyable read.
Rating: 3.0/5
This latest offering from Amanda Brittany draws on a number of tried and tested themes and literary mechanics that regular readers of the genre will be familiar with. It uses a dual timeline with (almost) current events taking place in 2019 and historical background being interspersed from the 1980s. If you are already familiar with Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" (and most readers of this genre will be) then you will hardly fail to notice the influence of that novel on both the setting and events that transpire during the 2019 timeframe. Dame Agatha's legacy is also visible in the murderer's choice of poison.
This novel is certainly well-paced and there are sections that really are very impressive and suitably atmospheric, with the Gothic backdrop being used to good effect by the author. Unfortunately, the same high standard isn't maintained consistently throughout and the atmosphere and tension sometimes wanes as a result.
However, the most striking element of "The Island House" is the plotting. Not unusually, there are occurrences that are dubiously convenient, though necessary in order to move the storyline in the desired direction - but it is rare sight to come across plotting that is as far-fetched and contrived as is on display here. I am sure that regular readers of the genre will work out some of the twists and identify who the culprit is, but I would defy anyone to second-guess all of them. Just when you think that the plotting couldn't be any more outrageous this novel stretches credulity to new lengths with another outlandishly bonkers disclosure.
And yet, in spite of - or perhaps even because of - these potential shortcomings, this still makes for an enjoyable read.
