EXCEPTIONAL, and honestly THE BEST CRIME THRILLER I HAVE READ THIS YEAR - 2017 - POSSIBLY EVER! All Andrew's books are great.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 December 2017I have long been an admirer of Andrew Barrett’s writing style since I came across A Long Time Dead several years ago and have read all of his books from both the Roger Conniston and Eddie Collins series. The stories are set locally to me and it is this in conjunction with fantastic character development and the level of CSI procedural details that give them authenticity and gritty realism.
Whilst I was delighted that Andrew’s hard work had paid off and he’d been signed to Bloodhound Books, I was worried that their influence might impact his writing style and dilute those aspects that many have grown to love. I was therefore apprehensive when his standalone novel The End of Lies was released as, apart from being a departure from the characters I know intimately, it was also written from a female viewpoint, which is new for Andrew. Having now finished it, in record time, I’m happy that my fears were completely unfounded. He’s shown that he’s perfectly capable of writing an engaging story with rounded characters and well crafted plot, even if they don’t revolve around the CSI lifestyle for which he is clearly an expert. Although the occupation of the lead character seems an unlikely one to become entwined with the criminal fraternity, I was able to put this aside and enjoy the twists and turns along the way until the highly unexpected ending. It was fast paced and whilst none of the characters were particularly likeable, which to me doesn’t matter if it’s in keeping with the story, they were well developed and used language appropriate to the environments they were in. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! Sit back, enjoy the ride and I guarantee that if this is your first encounter with Andrew Barrett you’ll soon be looking out for his other work.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 May 2018Becky Rose, a sweary librarian is married to Chris, who works in the police intelligence unit, tracking criminals. Sick of their pedestrian life, at Chris’ suggestion, they decide to escape the rat race by selling intelligence on informant’s names to a big time criminal. The story opens with Becky Rose stumbling upon her husband’s body – struck down in their home, the criminals still there. Becky runs for her life and manages to escape, thanks for the timely car accident, which wipes one of the gangsters off the streets for good.
The police have lots of questions, her best friend, Sienna, has lots of questions – but also some answers.
The story is fast paced and the writing is nice and tight (though sometimes it does wax a bit lyrical), which means that although there is plenty of different action it never gets confusing.
My only disappointment was that the characters and their relationships weren't always consistent - when Becky described her relationship with her husband, at times it was a perfect marriage to a perfect man who she loved deeply, at other times, she talks about how she thought he was going to leave her, and recounts quite a conflicted relationship.
Thankfully the action and plot pull you through the story so fast, there isn't time to ponder on the lives and loves of the characters for too long.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 December 2017Having received and read 'The End Of Lies' from the Author, as a pre-release gift, I was so impressed that I have ordered it as Christmas gifts for my friends. I have to say that I was wowed by the intensity and gripped from the very beginning. Andrew Barrett's best ever book so far! He has now set the bar - Jeffrey Deaver beware - Andy is moving in fast! Gritty, thrilling, edge of the seat, whirlwind of twists and turns, frighteningly believable characters - it's all there and I challenge anyone to guess what happens before the very end. It grabs you from the first sentence and leads you through twists and turns, with Becky as the focal character. There is love, an enduring friendship, betrayal, motive, malice, cruelty, murder, a very kind Taxi driver and a totally unexpected ending. This book has it all, in spades. Andy, has exceeded all expectations in this fabulous stand-alone story. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this unique and amazing book by the Author of superb crime novels such as 'The Third Rule' and the novella 'The Note', to name just a couple. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2017I am normally a huge fan of Andrew Barrett's work, but this book rather left me bemused, I know that it is a standalone book that doesn't fit into his normal CSI stories and is therefore a bit of a gamble on his part. Unfortunately, for me it didn't really pay off, and I think that there are two main reasons for this: the first is the main character, Becky who got more and more unlikeable as the story progressed, until I really didn't care what happened to her; the second is the sheer implausibility of the story, I know it's fiction and I accept that a certain suspension of disbelief is often necessary in thrillers (I do read a lot of them), but this just went off the scale for being unbelievable.
Did the book live up to the blurb of being a 'gripping thriller you won't want to put down'? not really, I did consider giving up several times, but as I am on Mr Barrett's advance reader team, I felt that I had to finish it.
So, sorry Andrew but I'm afraid that this one just wasn't for me, back to the CSI stories please!

5.0 out of 5 stars TRUTH CAN BE DECEIVING
Wow! Absolutely amazing! Thrillers are my preferred choice for pleasure reading. I have read hundreds of them but never had one do a complete u-turn so quickly and so smoothly. The end of Becky's story changes everything you thought, believed, and felt all through the book. All of a sudden in a few short chapters, The End of Lies becomes a completely different story! It blew me away. If for no other reason, read the book. I promise, you will be shocked.
The End of Lies is a British crime thriller written in the first person with the main character, Becky, being the narrator. Becky is an innocent, naive librarian whose life has been turned upside down by betrayal and murder. After the murder of her husband Chris, who worked for the National Crime Agency, Becky sets out to avenge her husband's death and must fight the evil forces of organized crime to do so. As she fights to continue to survive she teams up with her best friend Sienna, who helps her fight this noble battle only to be betrayed again.
The End of Lies is a perfectly woven tale of love, revenge, crime, terror, corruption, greed and violent murder. As usual, Andy's characters jump off the page in brilliant technicolor. Their fully developed personalities are so realistic you will love and hate them as you come to know them. Your heart will warm for Becky. Savage, the mob boss, will make you shudder at the very mention of his name. His second in command, Streaky, will nauseate you with disgust. The bloody crime scenes will make you cringe in horror.
The End if Lies is Andrew Barrett's first book with his new publisher, Bloodhound Books. The book is action packed and the excitement heightens to new levels with each page. It is one of those rare books that you truly don't want to put down. I gave this book five stars for its intricate, complex story, Andy's masterful writing technique, and for its shock value. The End of Lies is a must read.
Bravo Andy and thank you Bloodhound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Because I am a librarian and I hate cliches
I have read all of the Eddie Collins and Roger Conniston stories by Andrew Barrett, and thoroughly enjoyed them all. This one, (minus Eddie and Roger) ventures into previously unexplored territory, and, as the author states, regarding his writing, there is no formula or typical approach to the plotting. It is about real people caught up in messy situations, and doing their best to get through them. The End of Lies, unsurprisingly, is a tale fraught with suspicion, terror, betrayal, violence, and the totally unexpected, and it was a treat to read. (My pre-ordered copy of The End of Lies arrived into my Kindle yesterday; I finished it this afternoon.)
The lead character, Becky, is battered physically and emotionally as the pages are turned. The criminals are convincingly evil and heartless. The police / authorities have motivations that will give you the creeps. Everyone is touched by greed. And bundles of money, (two million pounds at one point) up the consequences for characters making the least mistakes.
If you like Andrew Barrett, I highly recommend the work of Will Patching for more superior writing in a similar genre.

A gripping novel that left me with whiplash. So many twists and turns!
Becky arrives home from work to find her husband dead on the floor and men ransacking her home. She knows what they are looking for, it is a list of informants working with police to provide information about a local gangster. She knows this because she and her husband have formulated a plan to skip the country and their boring lives by selling this list to the gangster they're informing on.
Now the gangster wants that list, and the money he's paid as a deposit for it. With the help of her best friend, Becky must find both before the hourglass runs out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept me guessing!
Wow! Totally didn't guess who killed Chris. This entire thriller kept me guessing. Was it Savage? His goons? How could Sienna do such things, being a long time 'friend' of Becky's?! A few typos but not too distracting from the storyline. Still, the ending left me wondering what really happened. Am I just not following it?
