Editorial Reviews
Multiple Grammy and Emmy-award winning musician Harry Connick, Jr. presents his new album That Would Be Me. For the first time in his career, Connick took a step outside his musical comfort zone to work in the studio with two "external" producers on this album the acclaimed Eg White (Sam Smith, Adele, Florence And The Machine) and Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Pink). That Would Be Me was recorded in London with White and Nashville with Walker. The result is a carefully crafted record full of surprises and stirring musical conjurations, delivering 11 new songs and new insights into his artistry. Additionally, the album art also represents a departure from his other covers, showcasing a portrait of his face created entirely from musical objects.
Regarding his chosen producing partner, Harry commented, "For the most part, nobody's ever made musical decisions for me before... This is brand new territory. I'm used to jumping in head-first, but all of a sudden I found myself not in full control of the wheel anymore." Connick notes that he picked up on both producers styles as they began working together. "Butch is more of a 'let s play the song in the room' kind of guy, so we invited a couple more musicians in; with Eg, it was a completely different experience it was just the two of us in a room writing, starting with an idea, a groove or a chord or melody line." While Connick reserved the right to have final say on the end result, he found his voice coming through the record and enjoyed the collaborative nature of the process.
That Would Be Me includes infectious gems like the White-produced "(I Like It When You) Smile," which includes an impromptu-hand clap and Connick serving up a one-of-a-kind-scat-rap-of-a-vocal that heats up mid-song and never lets down. Walker-helmed songs include the percolating "(I Think I) Love You A Little Bit," the sultry/funky "Songwriter" and the catchy first single, "(I Do) Like We Do."

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2016Great album and a bit of a departure for Harry C. There's a bit of country in it, a bit of soul, but also enough jazz to keep us long-term fans happy. I enjoyed it while driving to New Orleans, blasting it in the car on my way down from Chicago.
I live part-time in both New Orleans and Chicago. One morning in New Orleans, I was coming down my stairs and heard music playing on the street outside my front door. I didn't think a thing about it since I live on Royal Street behind St. Louis Cathedral where there's always a band entertaining tourists. But when I walked outside and looked fifteen feet ahead, there was Harry, sitting at a baby grand piano, surrounded by old black musicians and Mardi Gras Indians, jamming away while a music video was being filmed. I stood there for an hour, listening to "You Are My Sunshine" sung over and over about fifteen times. I found myself praying for their success so I could stop listening to that song.
On my return to Chicago, I told the story to my kids, whose eyes grew big and smiles grew bigger. I pointed at the front door of our house on our quiet, lazy, Midwestern street, noting: "Every day for twenty years, I've opened that door, hoping to see Harry Connick, Jr. Not once has he ever bothered to show up. However, in New Orleans..." Craig Bennett Hallenstein, Author of "The Dolphin."
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2016Long time Harry Connick Jr. fan here so I had to have his new CD. I listened to the short "teaser" samples on Amazon and the first song had me.
Mr. Connick does stretch beyond his normal and familiar songs but after listening to the album several times, I am amazed at his versatility. His voice in distinct and unique and I can never get enough of his fingers on the piano. I believe that an artist that doesn't grow and experiment becomes stagnant in their old repertoires and ends up becoming a has been. We have no fear of Harry of ever becoming redundant. This album is proof that he's bright and fresh and one cannot help falling for Harry.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2016Usual Harry. He should do more upbeat songs like the first one on this albumn.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2015This is another proof (as if Harry has to proof anything) of how versatile this phenomenal artist is! Bringing us a new CD containing great compositions, produced with (especially) Butch Walker (great job, Butch!) and Eg White (solid productions) to share different experiences and let us see another side of his creativity! Daring to choose for different approaches - and not always walk the oh so successful path - shows how fantastic an artist Harry Connick Jr really is.
Five Stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2017Eh, this is not Mr. Connick Jr at his best - ceding creative control to outside producers/collaborators isn't necessarily a bad idea... but in this case the results, which try to place Harry in a more contemporary setting, are often too generic and bland. By the way, if you're looking for the crooner stuff that he does so well, this probably isn't your record. Might've worked better had Connick stuck with Eg White for the entire record, instead of splitting production duties with Butch Walker. The Walker tracks, recorded with a full band lineup, are more conventional. It's on the White-produced tracks that Harry steps outside his comfort zone.
There are nice moments - including the worthy hooks in the exuberant album opener "(I Like It When You) Smile" and the adventurous closer, "Right Where It Hurts." Other highlights: the laid-back "(I Do) Like We Do" and "Tryin' To Matter." It's just that some of the weaker moments could've benefited from more of the energy Connick brings to his "poppier" albums. Connick does display his underappreciated versatility throughout, adding his own drumming and horn playing to his usual keys.
There's a retailer-specific version that contains two exclusive bonus tracks - both of which are better that several cuts on the main album (including the title track which, yes, we not included on the standard edition). I didn't realize this originally, which led me to buy the album twice! Glad I did because "That Would Be Me" and "You'll Be Back" are great tunes.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2017Not normally a fan of his work but this one is different. I was in two minds but based on the reviews I purchased it. Really glad I did. Some fantastic songs with a fresh feel and take. Good variety of songs. Very melodic and a nice departure from what people might think with what Harry records.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2016Harry Connick Jr is one of my favorite artists and this is a fantastic album! I saw him in concert this summer and he is tremendous live. Very fun music that makes you want to get up and dance. The package was delivered quickly and in good condition. I would recommend this album to anyone who loves jazz or a retro sound of music.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2015Harry Connick Jr does not disappoint in his latest release. I thought the album was different than his previous work, almost reminiscent of Billy Joel, but still Harry's distinct voice shines through each song and made the album enjoyable all the way through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harry hits the mark with this one.
This is something of a change in musical style for HC Jr. This album really rocks, rather than swings along from the opening bars of track 1. His pianistic skills aren't as big a feature here as they are on his previous albums. HC displays his musical talents in various ways here. As well as his usual virtuoso piano playing, songwriting and arranging skills, he also plays various other instruments including trumpet, trombone, saxophone and organ, and he plays them very well indeed. The songs themselves are all written or co-written by him, and very good they are too. Some of the best songwriting I've heard from him for quite some years.
As already mentioned this album is not in the jazzy style that he is more famous for. His last album 'Every Man Should Know' was also something of a stylistic departure but I personally thought that it was a step backwards and that the songs weren't all that good. However this time around I think he has nailed it. I get the feeling that this album is intended to appeal to Michael Buble fans. I can imagine Buble singing many of the songs on this album, but if he does they won't sound anywhere near as good as they do here. This is a major music star at the top of his game.
