Editorial Reviews

Dungeon Golds was recorded primarily in the basement (a.k.a. The Dungeon) of Scott McCaughey, leader of The Minus 5. These songs are the product of sporadic spare moments of inspiration over the last few years. This collection was artfully curated, by McCaughey, from the extremely limited edition (500 copies) Record Store Day 2014 vinyl only box set, Scott The Hoople In The Dungeon Of Horror. In the process of compiling these tracks, McCaughey could not resist reworking several of these songs. As a result, half the songs are different versions than what appeared on the box set. This is the first digital/CD release of any of these tracks. Guests include, Peter Buck, Jeff Tweedy, Ian McLagan, Jon Moen and Nate Query (The Decemberists), Linda Pitmon, and many others.

If you weren't fortunate enough to snag the Record Day release of "Scott the Hoople in the Dungeon of Horror" (5 full LPs), then this will help ease the pain. Dungeon Gold contains an album's worth of songs from the Record Day release. This is Scott McCaughey and Minus 5 at their best. A couple of the songs have been tweaked in a minor way (I heard Scott say in an interview on Nakedly Examined Music podcast) but this is essentially pulled straight from the Record Day release to create a coherent and wonderful album.

Although Scott's bands Minus 5 and Young Fresh Fellows never broke nationally in a big way, they've many great albums and inspired musicians and bands for a more than two decades. Scott has been a touring member for lots of other great bands: REM, Alejandro Escovedo, M Ward, Robyn Hitchcock, etc. [Peter Buck of REM is a core member of Minus 5.]

And while you're at it, pick up "Of Monkees and Men," too. It's another full album outtake from the Record Day release. It's another great one. And don't forget the latest Alejandro Escovedo album, "Burn Something Beautiful," which Scott, and Peter Buck co-wrote and performed with Alejandro.

On a sad note, Scott was very recently on tour with Alejandro when he had a stroke causing the final stops of the tour to be cancelled. Scott's friends have rallied around him to raise money for the medical expenses, and from what I understand, Scott is expected to recover. I have tickets in January to a benefit concert here in Portland, OR, where Scott lives. We're all hoping for the best.

This is one of those magical albums that doesn't knock you at first, but repeated listens have the desired effect of getting knocked out by it all, Really, this is a sneak great collection of songs. Rave on, brothers, rave on!

If you are on this page you no doubt already have heard other albums by the Minus 5 and know all about their all-star lineup of musicians. Like past efforts, these guys sound like they are having a great time, and that joy is magnified by the sheer quality of the songs, some of the best that Scott and company have written.

What more to say? Just get it and savor the majesty of these songs!

If it a rating just for the songs, I'd say 3, 3.5 stars. However, for the whole CD package, it's a 2 star. The songs are more accessible than typical Minus 5, which is sometimes pleasing, but sometimes you're hoping for the oddness of "gun" or "down with wilco".

A big, big factor that pulls the rating down is the recording quality....or lack thereof. I'm cool with burying the vocal down in the mix. Fine by me. The poor recording issue the ever-present tinny sound, especially on drums & at times vocals & guitar. Much of the treble here is an annoying, muddles buzz (not distortion, just lack of definition). This is poorly produced audio. For this alone, I'll probably donate it to Goodwill. I simply don't go back to such poor recordings.

The other factor pulling the rating down is not lyrics. I typically like how Scott writes & would like them handy here. Plus, for 15 bucks, it wouldn't kill them to put in a 4 or 8 page booklet.

This is another terrific set from Minus 5, apparently the highlights culled from a 5- or 6-disc box set. Tuneful, it rocks, it traverses various rock and pop modes as you'd expect from Minus 5, and REM's Peter Buck adds some great guitar throughout.

Absolutely love this album. Saw the one other review here at this time, and just have to say, to each his own. I rarely find an album like this where I become essentially addicted to each song, and it plays like a best of collection after a few listens. I know by now my musical tastes are idiosyncratic, but I had to pick up my guitar and play along with most of the album, I enjoyed it so well.

    五枚組みLPからの別テイクで、五枚組みはとても手がでないので、残念です。もっとマイナスファイブらしいのを聴きたかったです。これもコレクターズアイテムとしてはいいですが(^_^)
