Strikers: Eastlands Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 104 ratings

Escape from Texas was only the beginning.

Karas and crew are free, but freedom is relative for a striker. Never sure when trouble might find them, they’ve spent a year trading along the great river and exploring the world they’ve only just discovered is real.

It’s a good life, but life on the sea is a treacherous thing. When a hurricane traps them between open ocean and the mysterious land of Florida - a place from which no visitor returns - they find themselves in greater danger than ever before.

Florida turns out to be more than a secretive place that hoards technology. It’s a land filled with dangerous plots and even more dangerous people. Texas is Florida’s enemy and nothing else matters except victory. Strikers like Karas and her friends are exactly what Florida has been looking for. Within their bodies they hold the keys to victory and Florida wants to posses those keys, no matter the cost. Whether or not the friends can survive contact with Florida will depend on how deeply they can dig into themselves for strength...and how much they’re willing to sacrifice.

Strikers: Eastlands is book two in the exciting dystopian series, Strikers.

This is the second novel in author Ann Christy's dystopian "Strikers" trilogy and, though it is different in tone from the first novel, it is every bit as wonderful.
In that first novel we are introduced to heroine/narrator Karas Quick, a young woman living with an abusive, alcoholic mother in the Republic of Texas. Life is hard but tolerable and unlikely to change much, or so she thinks until she chances to see her long-absent father being marched to prison, where he will be executed within 24 hours. Desperate to know why he abandoned his wife and child, Karas and some friends find a way to sneak into the jail so she can see her father for the first time since she was little more than a toddler. Things get a little out of control during that clandestine visit and Karas and her crew end up breaking her father and the brother of a friend out of jail then start running for their lives. As you might imagine, this is a high-octane thriller.
"Eastlands" is somewhat different. It takes place a year later when Karas and Co. are comfortably settled into life in the Riverlands. There, they earn their keep by crewing on a fishing boat and by doing a little smuggling on the side.
It's been an idyllic 12 months but that changes when they get caught in a storm and are washed ashore in Florida.
That is definitely not where they want to be.
The reason: Florida has been at war with Texas for a century and treats all outsiders as threats.
The result: Karas and her friends end up quarantined and then kept against their will for reasons that are, to say the least, chilling.
I won't reveal more of the plot in this review but I will say that Karas and her friends are probably in more danger from the Floridians than they were from the storm.
As she did in the first novel of this trilogy, Christy demonstrates some very impressive world-building skills. Her descriptions of the security conscious Florida, its residents and their high-tech lifestyle are well thought out and believable, for example.
Christy also continues to impress me with her ability to develop extremely interesting characters, including the villains. Karas, for example, is a wonderful character: Smart, funny, sarcastic, and loyal to a fault she is everything you want in a heroine and more. No Ninja warrior or towering Amazon with bulging muscles and terrific fighting skills, she is a teenage girl who relies on her wits and her willpower to meet the many challenges she faces. That fact makes her all the more endearing as a character in my book.
The narrative in "Eastlands" is as strong as it was in "Strikers," which is saying something because the first book in this trilogy is excellent.
Definitely a 5-star book and one that I highly recommend.

I loved Strikers, the first book in this series. It’s a great book, and Eastlands is even better. This book continues the mapping of the fractured landscape that was once the United States. Texas is still a bad place, and Florida is worse. I found it interesting that the two regions are so similar, though. They are both prisons for their citizens, and neither is big on human rights. Having fled Texas in the first book, Karas and friends would rather avoid Florida, but they end up exploring it anyway. Ann Christy’s description of the Florida arcology is detailed and fascinating. It’s only one of several aspects of the story that obviously required a lot of research. The reasons for the war that destroyed the country are also revealed, and the ending has a twist that I didn’t expect at all.

That’s about all I can say without spoilers.

Karas and her friends were interesting and well-developed characters in Strikers, and this book adds depth to them, particularly Karas and Jovan. They’ve matured emotionally, both from the passage of time and their experiences since leaving Texas. In short, they are realistic characters, the kind that are alive on the page as they tell the reader their story. For me, this is the best reason to read a series – characters that I care about.

Overall, the story is fast-paced, intriguing, and full of feeling. I didn’t want to put the book down, and that doesn’t happen often for me. I recommend that you read both books and enjoy.

I read an advance copy of this book, which I much appreciate. Thank you, Ann! And now I've bought one too. Mine.

With each new title, Ann Christy keeps showing off her writing chops, and Strikers: Eastlands is no different. This time, Christy returns to her Young Adult Strikers universe with the sequel to her 2015 post-apocalyptic book, Strikers, and in many ways I enjoyed this turn more than the first time out.

The audience is immediately thrust into Karas’ world as she continues to run from her past in the authoritarian world of Texas after an apocalyptic event. Her and her band of friends soon find themselves in Florida, a seemingly utopian paradise bereft of disease. However, just as many things are too good to be true, Karas and her friends soon discover that Florida isn’t quite what they thought it might be.

I won’t go too much further into plot for fear of spoiling anything, but after a slow beginning, the action really picks up about a quarter of the way through and keeps it up through the end. Christy took the plot in a different direction than I expected and I’ll say, it was a welcome direction indeed. There is a scene in the middle of the book that could have been graphic and brutal, but she wisely refrains from making it a gorefest, letting the imaginations of the readers take over instead.

Young Adult can be a difficult thing to get right, but Ann Christy seems to have a good handle on it with her Strikers series. I look forward to the conclusion of it later this year.

This novel was intriguing, interesting, funny, and sad. The only thing wrong is that I WANT MORE RIGHT NOW !! I am hooked on this story and you got me with a twist or two. Plus, I love the characters and how the surroundings are described. It makes me cognizant of my own skin and atmosphere. This book is better than the first and you can't say that about many series. I love the moral compass of some of the characters: sometimes you have to bend to survive, and at others you stand on your convictions. Bravo, Miss Christy. Can't wait for winter 2016 for the sequel. This series would make a great movie !!
