This album has a wide variety of contemporary jazz. It is well worth picking up if you are a fan of Dave Douglas or Joe Lovano.

I"m still trying to get to the essence of this very adventurous music. I saw this group in person over a year ago and have been waiting for a recording. I have tremendous respect for both Dave Douglas and Joe Lovano. I have seen both of them in other groups, have many other Lovano recordings and several by Douglas. They are two outstanding jazz artists and if I haven't entirely figured this music out, it is because I haven't caught up with them. This is not background music and would not be recommended for anyone looking for an easy listen. The adventurous jazz fan will have all he can handle from two fearless artists.
UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW - I have listened to this CD for about two months since the original review above and have come to love it. I have changed the rating to five stars from four. The performances on this disc contain a great deal of simultaneous improvisation by Lovano and Douglas and less in the way of extended, featured solos (although there are several of these by both artists) than I had expected. When I saw this group in person about the same time that this recording was made, the music sounded chaotic at times and I found myself straining to isolate the individual contributions of Lovano and Douglas. My first reaction to this recording was the same. After several listens, my ears and mind began to adjust to the approach of this group and I was able to listen to the music on its own terms. Once I accepted that the emphasis in these performances was on the interaction between the two horns rather than their individual contributions, it all started making sense and, ironically, what each of them was doing became evident to me once I stopped trying to force myself to hear it. Sounds crazy, I guess, but this is how it went for me. A challenging listen but definitely worth the effort.

What are you locking for ? If you try to hear a great new jazz album this is you record. Two master, Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas under the influence of Wayne Shorter, with a great drummer Joey Baron and two splendid musicians, Linda Oh on bass and a marvelous pianist ,Lawrence Fields, all play in live Monterey Jazz Festival on september of 2013. Great solos and beautiful compositions from Lovano, Douglas and Shorter. The influence of Shorter is clear in all the album and I love Shorter, conclusion; I love the album. Instead if you are locking for other class of jazz forget it. The album is a exploration of the real meaning of jazz. Fantastic. I know that you can't find good critics, but I can't understand this. For me is one of the finest jazz live albums of this year. Try to hear it and give you opinion. Is another great jazz adventure . I love it. This is not a free jazz album, is a incredible jazz music session.

In this recording, Joe Lovano lives up to his reputation as an ever creative force in modern jazz. I am always impressed by his enthusiasm, passion, intensity and warmth.

The music on this record is entirely self absorbed and unlistenable. They're all great instrumentalists, but not great enough to save this record. I really expected so much more from them.

Like melodic, driving horn based jazz? This one is live and very good from two modern day horn masters!

4.0 out of 5 stars

Unlike many other 'one off' groupings of names big and small this band really kicks it from the word go with bucketfuls of swing, plenty of volume, and any amount of showcase soloing....all of which one expects from headliners like Douglas and Lovano, but from relative newcomers as well? Surely a case of band chemistry at its best. Laurence Fields on piano and Linda Oh on bass are very much peers, doing a great deal more than just follow in their elders' wake. The perfect blend of talent and vibe between relative strangers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Un buon lavoro dei 2
Reviewed in Italy on April 17, 2016
