Editorial Reviews
Goo is a portrait of Sonic Youth at their most self-indulgently noisy and contentious, covering topics ranging from Karen Carpenter (`Tunic') to UFOs (`Disappearer') to dating Jesus' mom (`Mary-Christ'). Even Public Enemy's Chuck D joins the fracas on the single `Kool Thing'.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2021I'll never understand why Sonic Youth isn't in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
There is much debate as to the "best" Sonic Youth album of all-time, some bold adventurers might claim it's EVOL, others point to Sisters, most would likely give the nod to Daydream Nation.
However this album also belongs in the date. Yes, it came later in the career of this influential and innovative band. Yes, it was an album that was fraught with production problems, Yes, most band members remember this recording with dread. It was apparently, no fun to make and cost way too much money for the record company's liking.
Despite all these problems the album launches itself like a rocket and never lets you go. It's a superb piece of work, lyrically, sonically and for the simplicity of just "rocking out". Truly one of the great rock albums of all-time.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2010When I heard Daydream Nation for the first time, I just didn't understand the style and why people would get turned on to it in the first place. It was a decent album, but Goo is among my top recommendations for anybody getting into SY for the first time. I hate to use the word "emo" as it triggers negative stereotypes in people's minds. But I mean real emotional music, the kind that makes you wanna cry, in a positive sense. This album is solid all the way through, with Dirty Boots as an excellent opening and my favorite being Kool Thing. And I love their experimentation with tone and effects in all their catchy melodies. My next plan is to get Sister, along with their other big hits, but from what I hear you should steer clear from their latest material.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2017I'm not sure I have a favorite Sonic Youth album; I like them all for different reasons. If you aren't familiar with SY I would recommend starting here, or maybe Daydream Nation. They are the most readily accessible IMHO.
Note that this is probably not for everyone. This is post-punk, or noise-rock, as some call it. And it may take a few listens to 'get' what's up with them. But I really enjoy their noise and find it quite satisfying. Particularly this album.
These are some of the best tunes of this era/genre. They deserve a hearing. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2023Vinyl sounds amazing, especially loud!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2023However, it works.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2022I had this album when it came out in 1990. I had turned on to Sonic Youth with "Daydream Nation," and so I was psyched to hear "Goo." Sadly I never cared for several of the songs, and so I have not heard it in years. But I had a hankering for the unique guitar sound, and listening again after all this time I realize there is a great EP here. I love the sound of the guitars!
Here is my EP:
Disappearer
Mote
Dirty Boots
Mildred Pierce
Cinderella's Big Score
Scooter & Jinx
Titanium Expose
Disappearer
Yes, it opens and closes with Disappearer, my favorite track.
For me this is a great evocation of 1990, and I'm glad to hear it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars I really good this album
