About the author

Jenna Nelson grew up in Shoreview, MN, where hanging at the local supermarket was considered a big night out. After graduating from college, she drove her 1979 Buick Electra, the largest car known to man, to California to flee the snow and find refuge in the land of film, her favorite pastime.
A Midwest girl at heart, Jenna lives in Santa Barbara with her husband and their saved-from-the-pound-pup Clancy. By day she works in the real world, by night she weaves tales of nefarious and fantastical worlds.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2015Nothing is as it seems in Winterhaven, especially for Sondrine Renfrew of the Other World.
She always knew she was different. If not the magenta tipped curls she had snipped only to see grow back, then most definitely because of the elemental powers she possesses. Still, the Cimmerian’s Curio Emporium in London, England had always felt like home. Until her Aunt forces a decision on Sondrine in an attempt to push her out. A decision that tips her world upside down, turning her seemingly predictable life into a flurry of emotions and decisions. Still, her life had few complaints, save her bitter Aunt. But a visit from a stranger with a mysterious Snow Globe changes everything, shaking up all she thought she knew and believed possible.
The Snow Globe is an unforgettable experience. I was fully immersed in the expansive worlds, creatures, characters and their magical abilities, mysteries, and adventures. The writing is beautiful, with lush descriptions and ample dialogue, and fully captures the old-timey feel of Victorian England. I devoured each word! I have a weakness for rich speech and Jenna Nelson did not disappoint. The world building is incredible, multi-layered, and stretches the imagination to explore both what is ethereally beautiful and disturbing. And the humor... Oh the humor! It's snarky, dry, fantastically witty, especially the bickering between Sondrine and a certain young man. Overall, the story line is clever and engaging.
I will never look at a snow globe the same again!
Highly recommended for all who enjoy fantasy and quest-like adventures.
Jenna Nelson, I can't wait to read book two! I leapt with Sondrine and must know what awaits her and me!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2015I bought this book based on the recommendation of a friend who told me: "If you liked Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, you will like this". I have to admit I was a bit skeptical at first because this is a new author, and I rarely think any book comes close to HP and GoT series. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the expert world-building, the originality of the plot, and character development. Most of all, I am very impressed with the WRITING. The prose are beautifully written and the main character has a distinct voice and personality, appropriate for the time period. The story is well-paced and you want to find out more about the characters and their back stories. I would definitely recommend this book to Harry Potter and GoT fans (note: this is not adult themed like GoT, there are a couple of disturbing scenes but nothing overly violent or sexual, should be OK for older teens).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2021I needed a break from the romance reads and a friend recommended this story to me. I was first delighted with the writer's skill in weaving the English language into a beautiful tapestry of imagery and story.
Next, I was immediately drawn into this world by Sondrine, a very quaint character. Then a mysterious stranger turns into a man who I wasn't quite sure how to take. One minute dismissive and acting like he didn't care, then turning around and saving Sondrine only to involve her in intrigue.
Sondrine showed ingenuity and a strong spirit as the mystery man, Shan, introduced her to an evil king and his young child servant, Lark. There were so many twists and turns, in this world of creatures and magic. There was definitely a dark side to this world as well. Soon Sondrine doesn't know whom to trust and finds she has a destiny to fulfill in this strange place she finds herself in.
I haven't enjoyed a fantasy this much since I read Lord of the Rings. Definitely kept my interest in trying to figure out all the intrigues going on. I liked how, even though the story wrapped up at the end and could have been a stand-alone, you know Sondrine's mission isn't complete yet. There was no huge cliffhanger, but enough intrigue I couldn't wait to read the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2017Neither enthralling nor totally boring, this is a sometimes confusing lead to other books in the series. It's only okay.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2015If you like to read books with vividly drawn, engaging characters in whom you want to invest your time, and if you love the idea of a magical realm with secrets, mystery, deceit, romance and adventure, then I highly recommend to you The Snow Globe! I am an exceptionally S-L-O-W reader, and because of this, it is essential to me that I care about the characters I'm spending my time with. The author does a marvelous job creating intruiging characters and bringing them to life before your eyes, and I loved being able to actually envivision the people and places she creates because of the exquisite detail. The writing is top notch, with a vocabulary that is both challenging and appropriate for the time period, and the dialogue is realistic. If quality of writing matters to you, you will not be disappointed in this author's prose.
Along with dynamic characters, the storyline is definitely unique, enchanting, and kept me hooked from start to finish. I found the pacing to be quick, but so is the urgency of Sondrine's journey, and never once was I disinterested or wishing the story would move on. Given that this is the first in a series and one never knows whether you'll feel "satisfied" at the end the first book, I was extremely pleased with how the ending ties up some immediate concerns but leaves many unanswered questions and a great deal of room for the story to grow. It left me wanting more!
I would highly recommend The Snow Globe for children in the "tween" years (if they are somewhat sophisticated readers, as many kids are) AND adults alike. As an adult, I can't wait for the next installment!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous fantasy set back in time
This was a very hard book to put down, pity I had to work. It's a fabulous fantasy set back in the late 1800's. With twists and turns to keep you hooked until the end. I recommend this for all ages and I look forward to reading more by this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars I could not finish it
The book is not worth my time. It's very rare that I don't finish a book but I just couldn't get myself to read on. I stopped when they are on the air ship and decide to turn around.

4.0 out of 5 stars A really good fantasy story
Coming across this book was just pure synchronicity. I was listening to Lindsey Stirling's song Shatter Me (about a ballerina trapped within and trying to break out of a snowglobe) when Jenna's post about the book popped up in my Twitter feed. Going with the flow I immediately downloaded and read it - good decision & thank you synchronicity! This is a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy story. Sondrine (a feisty and very stubborn leading lady) has a lot to contend with in her magical Old Curiousity Shop, relatives who have 'plans' for her future, revelations about her past, an enigmatic stranger whose affiliation she is never really sure of, powers which she struggles to understand and control, implacable enemies she didn't know existed and sudden transportation into the beautiful but very dangerous world of Isceald. Not surprising she gets a little grumpy - who wouldn't? It is to the author's credit that Sondrine remains a thoroughly engaging character throughout. I really recommend this to anyone who likes a good fantasy story and, like the previous reviewer, I am patiently waiting for Book 2 to appear because it's going to be good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Waiting ages for anothe one.
Four stars as I'm still waiting on the next one. I hate when you have to wait so long in between books. So much was left unfinished and it's been so long it's like the author has given up. I don't know why as this was a good read. Would like her to get in with it now.
