Not as great or engaging as their last albums. They decided to go in a slightly different direction which I commend them for however it's not as catchy or retro synthy as their previous work. Still worth a listen if you're a fan, just expect something slower, more ambient genre with this album.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2018This is probably the most conflicted review I've written yet.
First off, if you're looking for Teenage Color or Secret Diary, this is not it. There's none of that sweet retro-wave here, but instead College has produced more of an ambient, explorative type sound, similar to that of M83's "Digital Shades EP" with its dramatic, yet short and simple, film-like, samplings. Frankly (and unfortunately), what you hear in the samples is all there really is to this album - which, I hate to admit, is disappointing knowing College had the potential to produce something super extraordinary but instead left us hanging and longing for the music to be more developed and expanded. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, seeing how the rest of their work is simple and repetitive...which works wonderfully for a good long drive, but for this...I must've been expecting a regular kind of album.
That being said, I'm definitely not disappointed I bought this. I actually love the whole idea of it. The Asian theme (which had me sold in the first place) is consistent throughout the whole thing and faithfully reflects the beautiful cover art and title. The mood is both exciting/hopeful and melancholic/ introspective, like Teenage Color or the paradoxical nature of China itself. There are more than a few great "songs" here, like both Hotel Themes and Lipstick, which are enough to keep any curious fan interested from beginning to end. So, if you are as captivated with the samples as I was, then I would say buy this now and enjoy it. If you're bored listening to the samples, then steer clear of it.
For some classic Asian themed synth-wave, check out: Wang Chung's, "Points on the Curve"; China Crisis', "Difficult Shapes..."; and Roxy Music's, "Avalon". I assure you, they deliver ;)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2017College rather disappointed me in works like Northern Council and Heritage, the only albums/eps I liked was secret diary and teenage color. This one blew me away especially Love Peas which was in a very different style than any other song he made.
