- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2015I thought The Script's music was a bit too rappy for me, although I loved 'Hall of Fame'. Then I heard 'Superheroes' and 'No Good in Goodbye' on the radio and investigated further - thanks to Youtube. This is a brilliant album, without a single dud track. I personally love the intelligent clever lyrics that tell a real story, the strong melodic arrangements and the 'anthemic' sound, and am very glad I bought the album. Every time I listen to it I hear something I hadn't noticed or appreciated the time before.
From reading the reviews I hear that the album was slated by some of the music critics - I wouldn't know about that or care. 300-odd 5 star reviews tell a different story, and anybody thinking of buying the album shouldn't be swayed by critics who think we should all listen to hard-core obscure dirges that are nothing more than ugly noise. This music is uplifting, sometimes poignant, melodic and meaningful without being either sickly sweet or dreary and depressing. And the fact that they write all their own material is amazing.
One tiny criticism - and this has nothing to do with the music, just a personal nit-pick. If you like to read the lyrics in the accompanying booklet, you're in for a hard time. I know it's only a 'design style' thing, but the lyrics are printed in a fine type in turquoise on black which is difficult enough to read, but they are also written in one loooooong continuous sentence with no breaks for full stops, commas or paragraphs from start to finish, which makes it almost impossible to read without going crosseyed! This isn't a criticism of anybody's grammar, just the design. You can hear and understand everything on the tracks anyway, but it would be nice to have readable lyrics. Only a personal observation and doesn't take anything away from a brilliant album.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 September 2014It's so good to have The Script back and this is another fine offering from the Irish trio. No Sound Without Silence is packed with tuneful melodies and great lyrics as we've come to expect but there are three noticeable differences - the rapping from 3 has gone, for the first time they have produced two very Irish sounding songs (Paint the Town Green and Hail Rain or Sunshine) and the album includes three slow tracks (a rarity as I'm Yours is their only previous slow number). Flares, Without Those Songs and Never Seen Anything "Quite Like You" are all beautiful, the last being my personal favourite - gorgeously romantic. Superheroes was a fantastic first single and they are certainly spoilt for choice for a follow-up. Possibly Man on a Wire is the next most commercial track.
My 11-year-old daughter sums up the progression of their albums as being reflective of the different stages of their lives - The Script is cool and hip, Science and Faith rocky and fresh, 3 rap-based (their "mid-life crisis" apparently which she loved!) and No Sound Without Silence slower and seeing them return to their Irish roots (a natural consequence of the ageing process?!). As a slightly older 30-something myself, I am glad to see this cycle of life represented in their music and can't wait to see them take No Sound Without Silence on tour. I'm just hoping they showcase more of their new songs this time - they are all great and deserve to be heard. Love you guys.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 September 2014The Script have really done themselves proud with this album and it's the closest they've come to their epic 'Science and Faith'. What is special about this one is that it's obvious how much thought has gone into each song - every lyric, every melody, every part of the musical structure has been carefully crafted into a work of art. Many of the songs deal with quite powerful themes - 'The Energy Never Dies' deals with the death of a loved one and the hope that we'll go on and meet again; 'Man on a wire' carries a clever analogy about vulnerability and the fear of someone seeing you fall; 'Flares' - inspired by someone pulling through a serious illness - is about finding hope in the most desperate of times. The more lighthearted songs on the album (e.g. 'Superheroes', 'Paint the Town Green' and 'Hail Rain or Sunshine') are ridiculously uplifting, feel-good songs, and even they have a deeper underlying meaning, paying homage the band's Irish roots and to the idea of overcoming adversity and being true to yourself. I was lucky enough to see The Script performing at three of their album launch gigs this past fortnight, and not only do these new songs stand out when played live, they also fit in perfectly with the band's earlier music. Ignore what the critics have said about this album, as it's a work of genius and the music journalists have totally missed the point.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 April 2023I bought this for my niece and she’s loves them.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 November 2014I've been a huge fan of The Script ever since their debut guitar-and-piano-fuelled album. My favourite album that I have ever owned is Science and Faith (not a single song on there I don't like). While #3 may have been a disappointment, No Sound Without Silence sees The Script go back to what they do best: invigorating guitar solos, soaring choruses and most importantly, very clever songwriting. While nothing can ever top Science and Faith, No Sound Without Silence just proves the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Standout songs are Never Seen Anything Quite Like You, Man On A Wire, Energy Never Dies, and No Good in Goodbye for the most amazing wordplay I've heard in a while.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 September 2014Fab Fab, Fab album, haven't been able to stop listening to it. Managed to get tickets for O2 next March with special pre-sale code Amazon offered with early purchase of the album.
The music and lyrics are more what you would expect from The Script after their last album #3, which was heavily influenced by Will I am. ( still great).
Would highly recommend this album even if you are not a huge fan, which I am. Can't wait until March!!!!
