Rock King (Nothing But Trouble Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 308 ratings

The most famous rock star in the world has finally found the one, but secrets from his past threaten to ruin both their lives in this "heart-pounding romance" (Fresh Fiction).

Shane Hawthorne has it all. At least, that's what the headlines say about me. I have millions of fans, awards, more money - and women - than I know what to do with. But what you don't see is the wreckage I've caused. The memories and pain I can't escape, even when I pour them into music and spin them into gold.
I tried to forget. To lose myself in booze and groupies. It didn't work. It hurt me and - worse - it hurt my band. That's the last thing I want to do, so I'm cleaning up my act... starting with Delaney Fraser.
Gorgeous, smart, drama-free, and even nice - Delaney is the perfect "girlfriend." When I'm with her I don't have to pretend. It's like she sees the real me. And I can see a future with her. But that's dangerous. Because the truth is, Shane Hawthorne doesn't actually exist. He's a shield to hide who I really am. Fraud. Runaway. Addict. Murderer.
And it's impossible to love a lie, right?

You know those amazing books you read, that are so well written, with such a fantastic storyline, that you start panicking when you are coming down to the last 10% of the book because you don’t want it to end…YEP! Rock King by Tara Leigh is one of THOSE books! YES, Tara! You knocked it out of the park with this book! This is an eye opening perspective on the Rock World and groupies and obsessive music fans! The concept of a “contractual girlfriend” is…WOW! The instant chemistry and the banter between Delaney Fraser, a struggling waitress with a deep, hidden secret, and the rock legend, Shane Hawthorne, is soul biting! The twists and turns in this book have you at the edge of your seat and not wanting to put the book down! Plus, the sexual interactions in this book are delish!

When rock star, Shane Hawthorne, is heading out on tour, his manager, Travis, arranges to find a fake girlfriend/assistant to help keep him out of trouble. After some hesitation, and reading the contract and what she will get from it, (which involves helping her dad who is locked up for killing her mom) Delaney Fraser agrees. “You’re being paid to act like his girlfriend. What you do in private is entirely up to you and Shane.”

The Rock King has a few deep, dark, hidden secrets and many moments that will have you gasping!
I LOVED this book! I went through a full circle of emotions while reading this! I literally felt the love and the heartbreak…and (without too much “spoiler alert”) there was one part where I was reading with my jaw dropped!!!

The Rock King was SO well written! The storyline, literally, was one of the best! Plus, I loved how Tara addressed the issues of drinking and driving, texting and driving, drug abuse and recovery.

I can’t wait for Piper and Landon’s story!!!

I enjoyed this one a lot! Rock star romances have been a favorite of mine lately…for the most part. I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars. Thanks to InkSlinger PR for providing me a copy in exchange for a honest review.

So just a heads up: the summary makes this seem like it’s only from Shane’s POV, but it’s actually dual POV; we get to see both sides of this arrangement. The summary also makes this one sounds pretty dark, but overall, it wasn’t that dark. We mostly get to see the happy moments, the courtship, the forgiveness, and the possible redemption after so much grief and guilt.

I really liked Delaney and Shane’s characters for the most part. There were a few things Shane did that irked me, but overall, he was a good main character. And I didn’t really hate anything about Delaney, although the whole (basically) virginal girl for a guy who has slept around a ton is a bit overplayed, especially with rock stars.

We saw secondary characters, but I feel like we didn’t get to know them very much. We only learned a little about Piper, Landon, Travis, Gavin, and Delaney’s dad…and then a little about Shane’s past and the people in it. And then we only got like one glimpse at the other two band members (guitarist and bassist?), which is kind of weird given that they’re a huge part of Shane’s life. Although given his addiction problems, I can see why he avoided them a lot…but they’re playing shows together. We should see them a bit more.

I might have enjoyed this one a little more if I wasn’t mentally comparing it to the Stage Dive series I’d recently read. That one was so in depth with character developments, even secondary characters. We got to know all of the band members, some of the roadies, siblings, neighbors, etc. But regardless, this book was still fantastic. I can’t wait to read the next book which is coming out this summer. Yay!

I wanted to really like this book as the premise is a favorite of mine, kinda Cinderella story rock star style, with Piper as the fairy godmother. But I had an issue that is MINE alone and shouldn't deter rock story lovers. The writing style - I wish the Author didn't overstate their feelings for each other. Every time Delaney and Shane see one another, have a one sentence conversation, there were paragraphs of descriptive prose, I am a dialog driven reader so I found myself skipping the wax poetic stuff after the third time it was stated. When they did have a conversation, it was really good and interesting, they are both broken souls and even though they are at the opposite ends of the pay scale, they have more in common than they realize at first. The aforementioned Piper, old friend-not-friend of Delaney and Gavin, Shane's brother were terrific support characters, especially Gavin, at the end I wanted him to punch his brother in the family jewels over his hypocritical decision, but alas our Prince did the right thing and a HFN ending emerged. The next book features Nothing But Trouble's troubled drummer Landon and Piper, the provided first chapter caught my interest, so until July.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good story

Rock King is the first standalone book in the Nothing but Trouble series. I enjoyed this story, it's a beautiful, emotional romance but also quite dark in parts. I loved the connection between the main characters Shane and Delaney. I'm now looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
