Product Description

Blu-ray. All roads have led to this. Forty-one years in the making, the R40 Live tour took a very real journey back through time. Beginning with the grand design: a state-of-the-art stage set that pivots, rolls and dives, and brings Clockwork Angels in to bombastic, colorful life before marching stridently back in time (through theatre stages, a panoply of band and fan shots, the accrued memories of a life spent playing live) to a mocked-up school gym and the band playing there; a solitary bass amp set on the chair behind Geddy Lee, a mirror ball spiraling crazily above, casting thin rods of light like a light rain across the crowd, "Working Man" coming to a shuddering halt as the band's beginning becomes their end. Rush recorded and filmed R40 Live over two sold-out shows in the band's hometown of Toronto at the Air Canada Centre on June 17 & 19, 2015 in the middle of their R40 Live 35-date North American tour. R40 Live had the trio of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart, performing a career-spanning live retrospective, celebrating their 40+ years together. The epic live shows by the Rock Hall of Famers were captured with 14 cameras to present the band feature-film style. R40 Live audio was produced by Rush & David Botrill, and mixed by David Botrill (Tool, Muse); the film was directed by Dale Heslip, and produced by Allan Weinrib. The live photograph on the cover of R40 was shot by baseball Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, who captured the band in a rare moment when both Geddy Lee and Alex LIfeson were on Neil Peart's drum kit riser.

I missed this tour, I didn't realize how few shows they were going to do, and that it would be their last tour. I would have loved to have seen them one more time, and this DVD gave me that experience.

I marvelled at these three giants in their industry, masters of their prospective arenas, and virtuoso's of their instruments. All three are showcased very well in the show, with it starting from Clockwork Angels, and going back in time through all their albums. Every single one of them still had their chops, and it shows with this show in Toronto.

If you have never seen them live, this should be a great place to start as they touch base with all the songs that made them famous (they really only had 1 'hit song' and the highest charting of any of them was Geddy Lee singing Take Off for Bob & Doug McKenzie), the songs that that made them better musicians and pushed them into another level of musicianship that will never be touched by the likes of another three piece group anywhere.

Many have tried, but all fall short of Rush for filling the air with layers upon layers of music. And just for good measure, they pull it off live for you to enjoy right here.

    Rush live nothing better

What fantastic filming and sound editing of this show. Being a Rush fan for many years, I have listened to all of their live recordings and I would have to say that "Time Machine" "Clockwork Angels" and now R40 have to be the best recorded shows they ever made, but this one stands above the rest, because of the unique camera angles and the mixing of the audio track were just superbly fantastic. A lot of concert DVD's jump around and you don't get a chance to view each performer in certain climatic sections of a song such as a Neil Peart drum roll through XYZ, Geddy doing one of his amazing Bass lines that are such a big part of the band. And of course Alex, being Alex, whether it him being goofy on stage to get the fans going or watching him scorch through a solo, or watch him play a beautiful intro into "Closer of the Heart". The one thing that really irritates me are the people who have written reviews stating that Geddy's voice is gone. I went to the San Jose Show, just a few shows left before they ended the tour and probably their career's, but Geddy's voice was fine and as sharp as ever, and watching other shows that were recorded during the tour on youtube, you could tell he was singing very strongly. I just believe that Geddy unfortunately had either a cold or his voice was a little strained because in certain parts of the two shows that they played to record this DVD, you could tell he was strong on certain songs and in some others his voice was a bit strained. It's unfortunate that he wasn't exactly 100%, but the man still can still sing without a doubt, and judging him on one performance and saying that he was done, was incredibly inaccurate! At the San Jose show my daughter couldn't believe how good they sounded and she told me, this sounds exactly like their records, and yes she was right. I have seen Rush at least 10 times in my life and I have never been disappointed. If anything they have gotten better and better over the years. So what a way to go out in a bang, with a stunningly recorded DVD. I am just so glad that I got a chance to see them one last time (the tickets sold out in 10 minutes-BTW for that show I went to) There will never be another band like them. Three incredibly talented gentleman who just never slowed down........they just got better with age. I will miss them, but I will be very happy to say that I got to see them one last time. Anyway, this is the Blu-Ray of Blu-Ray's for any Rush fan with "Clockwork Angels" and "Time Machine" right behind them. Just fantastic!! Thank you Geddy, Alex, and Neil for inspiring me to want to be a novice guitarist and drummer. You just made me want to pick up a guitar and try to figure out every trick you ever pulled off. But I will certainly never be at your level of expertise, but is anybody at your ability level? I don't think so.......that is my opinion only. Go get this everyone, you will be very happy you did.
And thank you RUSH for an incredible 40 years of amazing musicianship!!

If you’ve never seen Rush live, or just want to see what the fuss was about, I would highly recommend starting with this show, and working backwards through their home video releases. In fact that’s what this show’s set list does, starting with the Anarchist from their last album Clockwork Angels, and playing both hits and deep cuts from most of their albums in reverse chronological order. Highlights include the seldom played Losin’ It, with Ben Mink on violin, and How It Is. Also hearing Bastile Day, and Lakeside Park played live again is incredible. Sadly much of the late 80’s early 90’s material isn’t played, but the previous two tour’s featured much of this material. Also an album not featured at all is Test for Echo from 1996, one of favorites. But this band has so much material, they simply can’t accommodate every album. The band sound phenomenal, but there is the odd mistake here or there, and you can see the band is very emotional about their impending retirement. They are more on the money on their previous live releases, in particular the Time Machine tour from 2011. But Rush is always one of the best live bands regardless. R40 Live is definitely Rush’s best looking DVD/Blu Ray/ Streaming release. It looks amazing in 4K, and the sound quality is second to none. If you don’t have a 4K player get the 4K streaming version to get the best quality. It’s worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Que gran final

5.0 out of 5 stars Gelungene Reise rückwärts in der Zeit
Reviewed in Germany on April 3, 2021
