Quilting by Hand: Hand-Crafted, Modern Quilts and Accessories for You and Your Home Hardcover – November 23, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
The projects in this book are diverse, versatile and fit for a bed, a couch, or for a new baby to grow into.
Riane starts with the basics: instructions will include tutorials for both hand piecing and machine piecing, as well as other beginner-friendly handwork techniques.
With thoughtful details that are interesting but minimal, designs will provide a mix of quilt complexity; some quilts can be completed in a weekend, and others may take weeks or months.
Riane Elise brings quilting to the forefront with her natural and modern approach, focusing on craftsmanship, tradition, contemporary design, slow stitching, and making with intention.

About the Author
Riane Elise is a modern quilter making minimal quilts for the modern home. She learned to quilt in 2011 from her grandmother, and once she found the right materials (linen, cotton, and wool), she fell in love and never looked back. Riane crafts heirloom-quality quilts that are as beautiful as they are functional, and each quilt is hand quilted with large stitching for a unique and durable finish. Riane has previously self-published the Inheritance: Minimal Quilts for the Modern Home and coauthored Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century by the Modern Quilt Guild. Her quilts have been featured in numerous magazines quilt design around the country. Riane lives and works in Denver, Colorado, with her husband, Kevin, and silly pup, Dallas. This will be her first book with Quadrille.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2023I sat down and finished reading through the basics of quilting in one morning! It was lovely and peaceful to feel like you didn't need a great deal of tools and how to embrace hand quilted versus machine quilted items. The author truly encourages you to find your own way of making. The patterns included are exactly what I was looking for in modern quilt design. A wonderful way to explore design on your own too. Highly recommend this for anyone thinking about quilting.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2023Okay this book and Laura Preston Simple Geometric Quilting are my absolute favorite quilting books. Alot of information for handmade quilting and simple and modern beautiful quilts. I love seeing all the different Essex Linen colors in the quilts. This book contained alot more than I imagined it would be.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2022This book has really lovely photos. I love the author's quilt aesthetic. Unfortunately there is very little actual information pertaining to hand quilting techniques. If you are looking for a book to give you inspiration and ideas, this is perfect. If you are hoping to further your hand quilting skills, this is not the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2022The book arrived in perfect condition. My wife is an experienced quilt maker and she was thrilled with the technique information and pattern ideas. She loved the book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2022I have had interest in quilting for a while now, but as a mom with little kids I just didn’t see how I could possibly pick it up with no space in my house to set up a sewing machine. I had read a few blogs and tutorials but all required sewing machines for at least some parts of the project. I just assumed quilting would not be for me in this season of life. Just imagine how excited I was when I saw this book! Riane’s projects are minimal and easy to follow. She also keeps supplies down to the basics and gives instructions on how to hand piece or use a sewing machine. She makes quilting so accessible and I cannot wait to start! Thank you for writing this beautiful and helpful book!
