Editorial Reviews

Nonesuch releases Punch Brothers’ T Bone Burnett–produced The Phosphorescent Blues on January 27, 2015.

After working with Burnett numerous times—most recently on the soundtrack for the Joel and Ethan Coen film
Inside Llewyn Davis and the related Town Hall/Showtime concert Another Day, Another Time—Punch Brothers decided to join forces with the multiple Grammy Award–winning producer for their new record. Last summer, the band and Burnett spent a month at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Recording laying down the songs that guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjo player Noam Pikelny, mandolinist and lead singer Chris Thile, and fiddler Gabe Witcher had written during several writing “retreats” last winter and spring.

Thile explains one of the ways the music on
The Phosphorescent Blues reflects the band’s view of modern life: “We often go to bars after shows or writing sessions, to be around other people for a little while. And I’d see people just like me on their phones, telling people they wish they were there, texting people who really are there. Then a song would come on that somebody likes and then they see that someone else does too and maybe they both sing it together and that moment is spiritual, some shared experience, and they are interacting in the flesh, with their fellow man. And that’s communion. Many of the songs on this record dive into that: how do we cultivate beautiful, three-dimensional experiences with our fellow man in this day and age?”

Shortly before the sessions began, Thile and Witcher met with Burnett and discovered the producer had the very same things on his mind. In fact, he’d just given a commencement address at the University of Southern California on the subject of technology and human interaction. Witcher remembers, “Thile and I looked at each and said, ‘This is unbelievable. It’s exactly what we are writing about.’ So this was a perfect, serendipitous union.”

I just want to listen to this album!
This is one of the best albums out there. It is an important piece of art. Highly recommend!-BUT-I returned the first order because I received a Talking Heads album in a Punch Brother cardboard shipping box. The replacement was the same talking heads album! Let's see if the third record will be the right
Thank you for your feedback

This mostly thematic album has a lot going for it. If you take the time to get into the subject matter, and appreciate the humor, and if you like the soaring technical brilliance of the players, this is a hands down 5 star album. But much like one of the songs on the album, the vocalizations can keep pushing you away, even while the other elements keep attracting. Somebody has to convince Chris that he is not Freddy Mercury. The high falsetto singing isn't bad, there is just far too much of it. Please keep in mind that I own all the Thile, Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers albums. But for those who are not already fans, you must be prepared for some complexity, some odd, but wonderful song structures. I particularity liked all the opposites: the attraction and connection of wireless media devices with the side effects of obsession, distraction, self absorption, and the delusion of a kind of religious preoccupation. I loved the time travel of Julep, the classical music covers, the lampooning of the obsessed (Look at us! We're GLOWING!, tripping the dark fantastic, singing the Phosphorescent Pinks and Blues) which makes me laugh every time I hear the song (Yes. I still use a flip phone and have NO data plan). There are lot of little Easter eggs in the song writing, the malice of the Weevil in cut 7 added on top of the totally sincere concern expressed in cut 6 (My oh My) that the illusion of intimacy and connection may be undercutting one's capacity to love as well as one might otherwise. Cut 1 (familiarity) is a brilliant sonic allegory of the central theme, but it's no pop song. Bottom line: If you love punch brothers, this is a no-brainer. If you loved Punch, but have been slightly underwhelmed by the other albums, you should love this one. For me this is 5 star material. For the un-initiated, it's probably a 4.

There isn't a song I don't love on this album. It took a while to grow on me as it wasn't as accessible as Who's Feeling Young Now, but once I got into it, I found it hard not to be playing it all the time. My personal favorite has got to be Julep...I could go on for paragraphs about how much I appreciate the lyrics of that song, but I won't. Instead I'll just give a short and sweet for the entire album. It's got the composition of a much more complicated, grandiose genre of music and yet much of it comes off as catchy, almost pop style music. It takes real talent to combine the detailed elements that these guys do and make it as immediately listenable as it is. If you haven't already, I suggest checking out their Tiny Desk Concert. It really showcases the talent these guys bring to the table even when they're doing a seemingly simpler song like Magnet. To sum it up, I started by listening to this album semi disappointed after WFYN, and ended up liking it much, much more for its complexity. My favorite album of the year hands down

The Punch Brothers soar beyond their previous works and amaze and dazzle once again. It's not the easy listening of Who's Feeling Young Now, nor is it the at times totally wacko Anti-Fogmatic, and yes I know their previous albums, but those are my references for this review.

It is a perfect synthesis of the two previous albums. There's nothing more I could ask for out of this band. Wonderfully, genre-bending, postmodern music that makes you work for true love of it. It is said of some great books such as Infinite Jest, Gravity's Rainbow, Ulysses, etc. that they "are not beach reading." To myself, this is the perfect phrasing for this album. It is not beach listening. But if you're someone who loves a band that bends the laws of music, taps into impossible timing, and does things with acoustic instruments that would make many old men despise such a thing, claiming it unnatural, then this is an album for you. This is a band for you. Just go ahead an download everything they've ever done.

The members of Punch Brothers were the subject of the 2011 documentary, How to Grow a Band, and in fact started out using that as their name. If there was ever any doubt, The Phosphorescent Blues shows that the band is fully grown. In the beginning, there was some indication that they were looking to prove something, showing us how much they could do, but now they just do it. Whether they’re covering a French Impressionist composer, or working up an old Americana tune about a talking boll weevil, they are clearly comfortable now, nothing to prove, deploying their immense talents over a wide variety of styles and material.

I cannot say enough about Chris Thile. I've followed him since his early days with Nickel Creek and I believe is the most important songwriter/musician alive today. The players he has assembled with Punch Brothers are as into the music they are producing as he is. And THIS is the most important masterpiece I've heard in the last 10 years easily. It has every style and moves and weaves so much there's never a stagnant moment. The amazing part is what you hear on the album is what you'll hear live. I've seen them and YES they are THAT good.
The vinyl version was nice and heavy, perfectly flat, and perfectly mastered.
I own 2 copies of this for when the first one wears out.

I found this title on a list posted by the Fresno Bee newspaper's music reviewer as one of the best albums of 2015. So I checked it out from the library to hear it for myself. Absolutely fell in love. The combination of instruments - played with virtuoso mastery; the lyrics that were obviously written by someone with a brain and interesting things to say - and say cleverly; the wonderful combination of the musicians' contributions - all of these things moved it into the "must-have" category.

Eine sehr gute Platte um die Punch Brothers kennenzulernen. War meine "Einstiegsdroge"
Julep, Magnet, My Oh My als Anspieltipps.
