- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2018After playing a detective witch in a TV series for several years, Poppy's contract is not renewed and she returns to her hometown. While there she notices a special headache she gets that allows her to freeze time! She believes she is becoming a witch, and her aunt confirms that is likely since Poppy's mother was a witch. Now Poppy is trying to figure out her powers and work at a flower shop she invested in with her two friends. When a local beauty pageant needs a judge, one of her friends pushes Poppy to take the job. Unfortunately, there are individuals from her past that she would rather not deal with-and apparently someone else feels the same way. It isn't long before the pageant director is poisoned and Poppy feels the need to step in and solve the crime.
If you enjoy stories of witches coming into their powers or stories about kiddie beauty pageants, you are going to love this book. Well written and cohesive, there is a touch of magic, a touch of romance, lots about pageants, how to run and live in a bed and breakfast, family appreciation and longings, and a darn good mystery. Some parts seemed a little repetitious, but over all it was a clean and fun book suitable for all ages.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2017I loved it! It was like a refreshing spring breeze blowing through the window. It just made me smile. Poppy was a witch detective on a TV show that was recently cancelled, she returned home to Alabama to help her Aunt Cricket (don't you just love that name, makes you think of such a cheerful, energetic lady!) with her B&B and go into business with two of her friends who have a florist shop. She got suckered into being a celebrity judge at a child's beauty pageant, in this world of high ambitions and conniving parents murder is committed. Poppy, who has recently discovered that she has magic powers that are real, seeks for the truth that will lead to the killer. The book is absolutely delightful, refreshingly clean, and has the cutest little graphics for the chapter headings. This is not a book for someone who wants a thriller, to learn something historical, to make their brain work overtime. It is a delightful vacation from the stress of the world, a time out. It just makes you want to curl up in a chair and read from beginning to end, the whole time with a smile on your face as you are whisked away. It doesn't stress you out with drama, it doesn't make you cringe with language, it doesn't make you scan ahead to skip the sex scenes, it just relaxes and renews you. This is the author's first novel, but we are left with the promise of more to come and I, for one, am anxiously waiting for more!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2018Mostly an enjoyable read and I especially liked the wrap-up, at the end. I do not like the idea of beauty pageants, for children, especially when they're dressed like little grown-ups. As far as I am concerned there is nothing redeeming about them. As competitiveness seemed to be the focus, of the book, maybe another type of competition could have been used.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2017OK, there are a few. This book introduces us to an intelligent, resourceful young woman who is just now discovering she has special abilities. If that's not enough, she also has a murder dropped in her lap. I gave this book five stars because it has good characters who grow as the story does, an excellent mystery neatly solved, a Witch who doesn't overdo her abilities, and a world I want to come back to soon. Oh yeah, and an uncanny black cat. Good Reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022Beauty pageant gone bad. Local actress asked to be a judge at a child's beauty pageant when the director suddenly collapses in her potato salad. Awesome story. Can be read in one day because it was so hard to put down. Amity Allen is a new author to me,so I look forward to reading more from her.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022Poppy Parker is home from Hollywood where she played a detective. Now she works with her friends making flower shop deliveries. She is talked into being a judge for a local beauty pagent for babies and teens. Wow, she thought TV was cut throat but these pagents are worse. When the lady putting on the event died face first in her potato salad Poppy can't stop wondering just what happened. Currently she lives with her Aunt at a bed and breakfast her aunts own and many of the contestants are staying there too. Next the videographer for the event is found dead at the B & B. After that Poppy can't stop investigating on her own. An enjoyable story all in all.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2017Great new beginning to a new witchy cozy. The characters were well developed and the storyline flowed together. I loved the main character, Poppy, and her familiar, Aloysius. I can't wait to see where this series goes. The best part, besides the awesome storyline, were the delicious recipes at the end. This is a book you won't want to miss.

4.0 out of 5 stars 👍🏻
"Poison & Potato Salad" by Amity Allen was truly entertaining. The story of Poppy Parker, the popular TV witch detective who discovers supernatural powers beyond the screen, is engaging. The blend of magic, murder, and a touch of humor resonated well with me. A delightful book that keeps you entertained.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cozy easy read.
I quiet liked the book, it was interesting to read through pressures and expectations of a baby pageant to a murder mystery unraveling itself. I like the characters and would recommend this book to those who enjoy this genre. A book well written Amity, d9 continue writing. 👍🏻😊

5.0 out of 5 stars Poison beauty
I enjoyed this book, it makes a nice change that the hero of the book doesn't work/own a cafe/bakery like most cosy mystery books seem to do, instead she works in a flower shop, not than she was there much. Although it did give her opportunity to question suspects while making deliveries.
She is also a witch and although that didn't seem to help in the solving of the mystery I think it will become more interesting in later books as Poppy grows and embraces her powers. All in all a good little murder mystery.
It all starts when Poppy gets talked in to become a judge for a local children's beauty pageant. Being an ex child actress she should be perfect for the job the only problem is all the year in Hollywood never prepared her for the contestants mother's and its not long before Poppy is wondering what she has gotten in to, and then the organizer face plants into her potatoes salad. With lots of suspects and suspicious behaviour surrounding the event, Poppy soon finds herself wishing she had a script telling her, her lines and more importantly who the killer is because being a tv detective is so much easier than real life.
