Editorial Reviews
Graham Parker and the Rumour, one of the UK's pioneering pre-punk bands, returns with a new album, Mystery Glue. Written in Parker's second home of New York and recorded in just six days in the legendary RAK studios in London, Mystery Glue is a real return to form for this seminal British songwriter and powerhouse band, which features its original lineup of Parker, Bob Andrews, Brinsley Schwarz, Martin Belmont, Andrew Bodnar and Stephen Goulding.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2015At the age of 64, Graham Parker has done it again. "Mystery Glue" is a brilliant album. Infectious, hook-laden songs from beginning to end that are skillfully sung and incorporate a variety of genres in a seamless way. Each time Graham Parker puts out a new album, the same thought comes to mind which is that Graham Parker is both among the most consistently great artists there has ever been over a career that spans thru many different decades, as well as being among the most criminally unappreciated. Arguably, Graham Parker is worthy of being mentioned alongside those such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Ray Davies, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and just about anybody else who comes to mind when discussing the all-time great song-writers in terms of both the tunes and lyrics that accompany them. Unfortunately, so few know that. As with the excellent "Three Chords Good" album which was released in 2012, The Rumour are back again on the new album, and they provide subtle yet perfect support, on a qualitative level that probably only The Band could have surpassed, and only a few other backing bands could match.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2015I am a long time Graham Parker fan and didn't get around to purchasing this album until now...partly because I was waiting for the vinyl...and partly because of the great debate on it's quality....some claiming it is a return to form...some claiming it is strictly for the AARP crowd...after listening to this once I actually agree with both camps. The interplay of the musicianship and rootsy approach to most of the songs is definitely closer to the first two Rumor albums than most of his stuff since...however, this doesn't come close to approaching the fire of those albums....which isn't necessarily a bad thing...Graham is 64 now and I'm not sure I even want him to try and sound like he did 40 years ago...so I find it perfectly acceptable to listen to him sounding like a much older version of himself...which is exactly what you have here...that being said, I certainly wish I could get rid of the do-do-do's and replace the kazoo parts with some horns...likewise, I wish the production was a little tougher...but this is actually pretty good for what it is and there are a few really good songs to boot. So this album is a definite win in my book. For the long time fan, I think you should resist the urge to compare this to the original incarnation of this band and simply sit back and and relish the opportunity to listen to this group of musicians a few more times....something I would never have thought possible a few years ago...so lets embrace this for what it is...a victory lap for a truly great band
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2016I was on the look out for some new music in 2016 and I'm so glad that I came across Graham Parker & The Rumours' gem of a C.D., "Mystery Glue." I love it's nostalgic and nouveau classic sensibilities "Fast Crowd"s flavorful, reggae tinged edge is dangerous, yet delicious, while "Swing State" conveys a peppy, fun, and high energy zing. It will get your feet running to the dance floor, no matter what your political affiliation. "My Life In Movie Land" beckons of old time Hollywood, with a kazoo solo by Mr, Parker that SLAYS! Lastly, "Wall Of Grace" is by far my favorite. This soulful, laid back groove, smacks of a Super 70's sunset. Truly, it's a feel good and phenomenal track. Overall, if you're a fan of EXCEPTIONAL music and musicianship, "Mystery Glue" will stick with you for a very long time..
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2015After reading the mixed reviews for this new album, I debated whether to order the CD or not. It sure wouldn't be something I'd find in the increasingly barren bins of my local CD shop. It seemed as though most of the negative reviews were from fans clamoring for the 1970s glory days of Graham Parker & the Rumour, and were disappointed not to find that same spirit on this recording. I was under no such illusions, realizing that those days are long gone, but I hoped, at least, this album would be better than their previous effort, the "Three Chords Good" reunion album. A good enough album, but not a stellar one in my opinion. Alas, GP has disappointed me even more with "Mystery Glue." No, it's not an awful album, but it's sorely lacking in passion, grit, and energy. Who squeezed out all the sparks?
What confounds me is the fact that in the past decade Graham Parker was on a real roll, putting some terrific albums: "Songs of No Consequence" in 2005; "Don't Tell Columbus" in 2007; and "Imaginary Television" in 2010. I think that trio of albums rank in the Top 10 of anything he has ever done, with or without the Rumour. Those albums were dynamic and powerful, packed with catchy songs and brilliant lyrics. Which makes this new effort sound so weak and uninspired by comparison. When I hear GP spout lyrics like: "I live in a swing state, I live in a state of swing" it makes me wince. If your 8-year-old son had penned those lyrics, you would pat him on the head and say "nice one, kid, no go to bed." But to hear GP sing stuff like that and equally insipid material such as "Slow News Day" and "Fast Crowd" is almost sad.
To be fair, there are some very good songs on here too. I love the playfulness and peppy bounce of "Railroad Spikes". "I've Done Bad Things" contains some thought-provoking lyrics, and the lovely and moving "Flying Into London" is perhaps the best thing he's done with the resurrected Rumour. If there had been more songs of that quality I wouldn't feel so let down by this CD.
Reading the other reviews, it's obvious that this new album has impressed many fans. But try as I might, I can't call it "brilliant" or an inspired return of pub rock. But neither is is all "fluff" as one negative review labeled it. If you're a longtime fan like me --- and I've been following GP since the very beginning --- you'll most likely want to hear these new songs. By all means keep an open mind --- perhaps you'll like it more than I did --- but don't except greatness.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2015It's amazing that these guys have gotten back together. Three Chords Good was probably just a little better, but this is just like anything else GP has ever done - with the Rumour, the Figgs or solo - pretty much flawless and the best rock and roll on the market today. Sure hope that even if they stop touring they keep getting together to make records.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un album ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Increíble!
