Editorial Reviews
Through the 1960s, songs that rang with Phil Spector s signature studio approach ruled the popcharts. In his heyday, Spector s name was more popularly known than the artists he made famous the Ronettes, Crystals, Righteous Brothers, Darlene Love. His was the Midas touch the pop singles on his own Philles label were as ubiquitous as Motown s and rivaled the popularity of the Beatles.
Fifty years ago, legendary producer Phil Spectorestablished his own record label Philles, and a new sound began to ring out of radio speakers across America. The sound Spector created lush, resonant, and dramatic, blending the sentimental swoon of string sections with the excitement of rock and roll was so different, so instantly recognizable, it earned its own name: The Wall of Sound. Through the 1960s, with songs like Be My Baby, Then He Kissed Me, Walking in the Rain, and Da Doo Ron Ron, he ruled the pop charts and made artists like Darlene Love, The Crystals and The Ronettes household names. For twenty years, no new collections of these artists, Philles s most successful, have been released, and only a limited amount of the tracks have been available digitally. The newly remastered greatest hits collections contain the best and most iconic recordings by these artists, and their familiarity will be sure to strike a chord with fans both young and old.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2023Oh, those were the daze - the Wrecking Crew and the girls! Much respect for Hal Blaine's incredible drums and Spector's genius.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2011Phil Spector once declared he wanted to create a sound that would be good for at least fifteen consecutive hits. A lofty ambition, when few record producers in the 60's could score more than one or two. But the proof is here, and it's an impressive proof. This is the Wall Of Sound, and Vic Anesini's mastering is to be commended here, as on the other three discs in this series. Finally, the bombastic intensity of these brilliant singles can be heard digitally for the masterpieces they all are.
The tracks which are unique to this hits retrospective are "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" (the first true "Wall" production produced at Gold Star Studios), "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (sounding infinitely better here than ever heard before) and "River Deep, Mountain High" which I would have preferred in its original mono mix for consistency with the rest of the album. As it is however, it's a superior mastering.
This is much, much more than just another 60s hits collection or a label compilation: it's a one-disc statement by a musical genius and highly-influential producer which underscores what he's said for years: "Let the music speak for itself."
Crank it up loud!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2016With all the lunacy going on in the world, I've been enjoying purchasing the great 60's music of my teen years! This is very enjoyable to me because it has the best songs of the Ronettes and Crystals; the wonderful Darlene Love's rendition of He's a Fine Fine Boy, etc. If you want to escape from what is going on in the word by listening to some very good music (where you can actually UNDERSTAND the words (unlike a lot of today's pop music (sorry)) than I recommend this. I'm also a big fan of Sinatra, Ella, Willie Nelson, The Beatles, etc.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2011Finally, we have a remastered single disc of Phil Spector's greatest productions. The sound is as good as can be, considering the age of these recordings. Mono never sounded so good. This is missing several key tracks, which may find themselves on a future multi-disc collection: To Know Him Is To Love Him(The Teddy Bears), I Love How You Love Me (The Paris Sisters), Every Breath I Take(Gene Pitney), Spanish Harlem(Ben E. King), and other hits by the Righteous Brothers and Curtis Lee. Particularly missed is the wonderful Black Pearl by Sonny Charles & The Checkmates. But this is the collection to get on CD, though the most comprehensive one remains the vinyl-only Phil Spector's Greatest Hits, from 1977 on Warner/Spector.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2014I made this purchase after watching the documentary "20 Feet From Stardom" which followed a number of singers some of whom sing on this CD. The movie reminded me of songs I had heard in the early 60's, but did not purchase. On particular song, River Deep, Mountain High (Ike and Tina Turner) was not a big hit at the time, but one I'm hooked on. That song alone made the purchase one I'm pleased with. For baby boomers, who listened to the radio, you'll hear a dozen great songs that made music history. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2022Love this music!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2012Da doo right right! If you own the "Back To Mono" box set from the early days of CDs, you need to update to a more recent issue like this one for the vastly-improved sound quality. All the obvious -and BEST- stuff right here. "I met him on a Monday and my heart stood still, da doo ron ron ron da doo ron ron. Somebody told me that his name was Phil, da doo ron ron ron da doo ron ron."

4.0 out of 5 stars Ottima raccolta dei primi anni '60
Be My Baby" rimane intoccabile. In commercio esistono su Phil Spector produttore raccolte più complete, ma per chi già li conosce o si vuole avvicinare al suo suono ritengo che questa sia un primo passo. Amazon tutto bene.
