- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2024It’s Paul McCartney what else needs to be written!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2015I've loved this album ever since it's initial release. Given the critical drubbing it received (by friends as well as professional writers) it has always remained something of a guilty pleasure. But re-assessing it now, in its latest re-mastered incarnation, I don't think that Pipes Of Peace requires any apology. It is an immensely enjoyable disc. And now, in its remastered edition, it's better sounding than ever before.
The title cut, McCartney's personal response to Tug Of War ("in love our problems disappear" - the melody of the intro alone is something to cherish) displays McCartney's melodic gifts as well as his seemingly effortless ability to pull catchy ear worm melodies out of the air (thinking now of those pipes and drums). While the lyrics still evoke a bit of a wince ("Help me to learn/songs of joy/instead of Burn, Baby, Burn" - ouch) the joyful spirit of the song prevails. In 2015 the message seems more apropos pos than ever before, and truthfully, the song itself seems less labored than McCartney's more recent efforts (Hope for The future, and Love Song To The Earth)
What's different is the extraordinarily clear remastering, revealing sound textures and layers never before appreciated. The tablas! The flutes! The early electronics! Listening to this album on a pair of high-end cans is a wonderful experience.
The Michael Jackson collaborations range from excellent pop (Say, Say, Say) to the dreadful (The Man - an album low point) Similarly, it needs to be acknowledged that Tug Of Peace is a bit of an enjoyable throw away as is Hey, Hey) Average Person is delightful - one of McCartney's ruminations about typical Joes living the average life he is about as far away from as possible. Similar in theme to both Penny Lane and On My Way To Work from the recent and arguably stronger album "New", Average Person is a bouncy, jaunty ode to an anonymous engine driver, a waitress, and a boxer. It's a minor theme, but McCartney bestows dignity on those folks - they were here today - by making them the focus of his song.
The bottom line is that McCartney has always been blessed, and cursed with a ridiculous amount of musical talent(s). Such excess may lead to greatness ('buff said about that) or mediocrity. On Pipes of Peace, even the mediocrity remains catchy and enjoyable. It's the heights that truly soar.
In the case of Pipes Of Peace, the unquestioned heights are So Bad and Through Our Love. The former is an absolutely gorgeous pop ballad. I know a previous reviewer didn't hear it this way, but really - it's just one of those perfect pop melodies that McCartney creates by pulling melodic strings out of the air. Once heard, it is not forgotten. I'm prepared to call it a perfect pop song - a masterful composition. And oh, that simple melodic baseline. Pure Macca.
Through Our Love, another McCartney ode to Linda, is simply beautiful. Perhaps not as perfect, not quite as unforced as So Bad, it remains none the less, a memorable love song that any of us should sing to our beloved on a special occasion. (Well, if we could sing like Paul. If only.) It is the type of song no longer being sung in this age of hard edged, cynical, angry pop music. Another song that benefits from the wonderful remastering. The production is an all out George Martin aural-gasm.
Between the highs and lows you have perfectly serviceable songs that are fun, buoyant, and catchy. Pure McCartney. And at this point in time, you either enjoy him or your don't. My guess is that you're reading this review, you do. Folks may think of them as silly love songs, but McCartney has always wanted to change the world with them. And in the long run - who has proven correct?
As I've said in other contexts: God Bless Sir Paul McCartney. If you've ever attended a McCartney summer concert, you know just how special a musician and performer he is. to see and hear 50,000 people, whose ages range from 6 to 80 , smiling and singing along with him - I mean what can be said? Who else can do this? Whose songs are as beloved or well-known?
Which other performer has brought as much joy, to as many people, all over the world during the past half century as Paul McCartney has?
The answer, obviously, is no one. So cut him some slack. Pipes of Peace is not a masterpiece, but it's quite enjoyable. It harkens back to an easier time, and calls to the best in each of us. It documents McCartney's reaching out to a newly emerging star (Jackson) only to have the latter turn around later and stab him in the back (by purchasing the Beatles' catalogue out from under him) And still, McCartney sings songs of love and peace. And now, they sound better than ever before.
The day that there are no new Paul McCartney songs to listen to will be a sad day indeed. Cherish each one.
Carpe McCartney.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2017This album was released in 1983, I knew nothing about Sir Paul's solo career after Wings but over the last few years I've collected just about all of his pop-rock albums and this one was among the last I discovered. In my estimation "Pipes of Peace" is one of his finest solo career albums. It contains "Say Say Say", "The Man" and "Sweetest Little Show" collaborations with Michael Jackson. Although I am not a Michael Jackson fan, Paul and Michael succeeded in dashing off a few fun songs. There is great stylistic variety on the album from title track "Pipes of Peace", to the personal insight of "The Other Me", the romping fun of "Keep Under Cover", and the soulful love song "So Bad". For some reason "Average Person" is my favorite with Paul's amusing observations of everyday folk and the intersection of their personalities and their professions. In "Through Our Love", George Martin adds strings and some orchestral instruments to give this love song some of the classic richness in emotion and wonder that is effortless for Paul. Finally, the bonus album in this Special Edition is filled with demo versions of several of the main disc's tunes. Ok for background music. Overall, Pipes of Peace" would make a good addition to your own McCartney collection.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2020Paul keeps the streak alive with another gem of an album. Pipes of Peace was in a rough place having to follow up Tug of War but Paul delivered strongly yet again. Plus you can't go wrong with two duets featuring Michael Jackson.
