For this super deluxe reissue, the album has been remastered and, once again, augmented by the inclusion of all associated B-sides, two previously unreleased BBC radio sessions, and seven unreleased studio tracks. The package comes in a lift-off-lid box, covered with silver mirri board as with the original 2LP vinyl release, and features four post cards, a poster and a 36-page book featuring interviews with the band (Richard aside) and never-before-seen photos.

I never buy boxsets but "The Verve" is an exception.

Well, I’ve always thought this band was special. After adding this to my collection, I know they truly are just that. The packaging is top shelf. The addition of the un-released material is off to the races. Thank you to the band for letting us hear this music. I will be adding the other super deluxe issues ASAP. What a treat. Just, WOW!!

If you are a solid fan of this band you will appreciate this box set. The Verve have clearly past the test of time throughout the years with some of their most well known albums like "Urban Hymns" but you can hear in their early work in "Northern Soul" as they develop the progression of their music. It's like an invitation to witness the polishing of their best work yet to come. The set did not disappoint even though some of the music in "Northern Soul" is raw, like basement tapes but you can hear the diamond in the rough. It did not disappoint.

Really good remaster. Nothing stands out as that drastic, but all the sounds come through crystal clear. I'm comparing this to an original vinyl pressing and don't notice much of a change (which is good). The extras are not amazing. The B-sides disc is the weakest part. But, it goes to show you how amazing the album is - perfect songs, perfect order, perfect range. The demos disc is neat to see the progression of the songs, including some that would later show up on Urban Hymns.
This album really is the pinnacle of the Verve, even if Urban Hymns made them super popular.

I was first aware of The Verve in 1995 when I first heard History. Like Bitter Sweet Symphony a couple of years later I was blown away and for both songs I can remember where I was when I first heard it.
I immediately bought Northern Soul and played it to death, more so than it's follow up Urban Hymns which was commercially more successful. Every song has a special place for me, especially Stormy Clouds which wasn't even a single.
Of the extra discs my favourite track is one of the B side tracks to History which I bought at the time - Grey Skies, with the immortal lines "We were so high, we gave NASA a fright".
Released at the time of Britpop and while a lot of their contemporaries were light and bouncy The Verve came across as quite dark to me. Always preferred them to Oasis too (though you couldn't accuse them of being light and bouncy!) - Oasis being in their peak years at the time.
Beautifully presented - a worthy addition to anyone's collection

Versione con 3 cd. L'album originale rimasterizzato, nel quale si cominciano a intravedere i Verve più conosciuti in pezzi come On your own, History o So it goes ma con l'inflenza psichedelica del primo album (A new decade, This is music o Stormy clouds).
Versione per veri appassionati. Contiene un cd di B-sides e rarità più un'altro interessante con versioni alternative dei brani dell'album e due versioni embrionali di Rolling people e Come on che verranno inserite nel successivo e ben più famoso Urban Hymns.

Disc three has some amazing previously unheard studio recordings of songs that would crop up on later Verve albums or as b-sides. Mover, Rolling People, Come On, Echo Bass. They're the Northern Soul versions of those songs, slower and more brooding, they're great to compare with the later versions to see how the band progressed their sound.
