Editorial Reviews

A Northern Soul is the second studio album by The Verve which hit No. 13 on the UK album chart and has since received critical acclaim. A Northern Soul moved them from psychedelic rock to alternative rock, with the lyrics taking on a more prominent role. It features the singles "This is Music," "On Your Own," & "History," and will now be available on standard black vinyl.

What can be said for the verves best lp,..I was watching a bad movie on cable one night, and i heard a song in this movie, at some LA party type setting, it was "Slide away". Probable the most known song from their first LP. That song cought my attention, looked in the credits got the name and sought them out. Bought "A storm in heaven". Liked the cd alot, loved slide away, but I was unsure of there longevity. Kinda forgot about them untell I found out there where coming to town to play. Bought a ticket (even if your not a big fan of a group from over seas, never know if you will ever get another chance to see them live again) It was the "Norther soul" tour. I had bought a norther soul cd already and loved it! One raido staion was playing "History" off this album. It was a sami big hit for the band. The album instantly became one of my faviorte cd's (out of 300). Finally a band that will withstand the test of time! So i thought....every song on the album has a feel all its own. History- synphony background loop with great lyics very smooth.

Drive you home- folk rock but very powerfull sounding.

So it goes- a blue eyed soul song.

    Brimstom Interlude- psychedelic rock.

    A new decade- rock.

A northern soul- psychedelic rock hypnotic gitar.

This is only 6 songs that are just awsome. Not a stinker in the bunch on this cd IMHO. If u listin to this album twice you will be hooked...Only if u like good music.

Sadly to say the band is broken up and Richard Ashcroft is doing his solo thing. From what I heard is that the synphony loop they used in the back ground of "Bitter sweet synphony" was a track off a stones album. It ended with the stones winning a copyright infringement lawsuit and the rights for the song....

I was fortunet enough to see this timeless band twice! I have 4 verve cd's and 2 Ashcroft cd's. Just to let u know im a fan of this band. (could ya tell?)

The Vinyl sounds fantastic. So deep and dark and bright all at the same time. Get this before it goes away.

Verve!!!! They were great before the "the." If you like psychedelic rock to zone out, dream, and discover worlds within worlds to, then they are for you. Music to trip too.
Unfortunately, this is probably their weakest output. Their debut, A Storm In Heaven, is miles above this. This albums successor, Urban Hymns, though a commercial breakthrough, is deservedly so, and has many more songs then this album. Their debut e.p.s, Verve & No Come Down, are both better than this, too.
Northern Soul is a little to hokey. But the first four tracks are pretty good. On Your Own and History are both essential, wonderful songs. Get their albums in order, is my advice.

Bought this based on the recommendations on Amazon and also from others on a music forum I'm on (Phish.net). I'm a very big fan of Richard Ashcroft, and really love Urban Hymns and Forth as well, but I'd never heard A Northern Soul. Everyone seemed to say that this was their best album, so I picked it up. I can't say I'm let down really, as it's a good listen and definitely quality music however I can't agree at all that it's better than the later Verve albums or Ashcroft's solo efforts. The thing I see lacking on A Northern Soul is good songwriting; it has all the ingredients of the Verve sound of course, but it just does't stick with me all that much and doesn't beg repeated listenings. I've listened to it about 8-10 times and it has yet to 'click'. Yes, it's more experimental than the later work, but I just think Ashcroft hadn't yet mastered his writing at this point. It does show where they were headed though, and it definitely has its moments but overall I it's weaker than his later output.

5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on September 1, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars il primo classico (ignorato) dei verve
Reviewed in Italy on January 9, 2016
