NOCTE (The Nocte Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,450 ratings

Dear Reader,

I once considered not writing this story. It was too dark, too twisted, too much, too, too, too.

Obviously, I changed my mind. But I re-wrote it in four different ways first, trying to make it different, more easily palatable, softer.

It didn’t work.

So I went back to my original idea, the idea that I loved. The idea that I dreamed about and lived and breathed until it was done the way I wanted it, the way it has to be.

I know you’re capable of reading it. I know you’re capable of putting yourselves back together again when it’s all over. I have faith in you.

Is this story dark?
Yes.

It is twisted?
At times.

Will it slap you in the face?
Absolutely.

Will it have you flipping the pages, trying to figure it out, trying to get to the climax, trying to breathe?
God, I hope so.

I wrote this story the way it needed to be written. I couldn’t sugarcoat it. I couldn’t water it down. It is this way because the story demands it.

I’m not sorry.

***
SAVE ME AND I'LL SAVE YOU....

My name is Calla Price, and I’m one half of a whole.
My other half-- my twin brother, my Finn-- is crazy.

I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me.

I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline.

Dare DuBray.

He’s my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I’m afraid, where I belong, where I’m lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me.
He has the power to destroy me.

Maybe that’s ok. Because I can’t seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt.

Why? Because of a secret.

A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming.

You won’t either.

4 stars!!...Recommended for those want something 'different' from our usual contemporary reads
When it comes to luring me to read a book, I really do have simple standards. A gorgeous cover will usually do the trick but in this case, Nocte not only has a eye-catching cover but an enticing blurb too good to resist and an author letter that gave me CHILLS so whaddya know? This is a book that no matter what I had to read the second it was available to buy. And now that I’ve finished I can say that the author definitely delivered on her promise in her letter. I was repeatedly warned about how surprising the big twist would be and how unconventional the ending was but nothing could really prepare me because when I got to those parts, I actually flinched at how chilling the words and the mood of the story was, and just like the characters, I, too, fell into despair over the big reveal and the fact that the ending answers one question but dangles an even bigger one in front. This is the story of Calla Price, a girl who’s surrounded by death and morbidity. Her father is a mortician, her mother died in a horrifying car accident, and her twin brother is mentally crazy. The poor girl just can’t get a break! But despite all the ugly in her life, she remains positive and is confident that her twin bond with Finn will ultimately save him from his sick mental health. They always say that twins have an extra special connection and so for Calla, nothing and no one is more important to her than her brother and his well-being.On a day just like any other, Calla drops off Finn at one of his therapy sessions and meets this guy Dare. Her connection with him isn’t so much as insta-love as it is soul recognition but there is just something about Dare that makes Calla hyperaware of him and him of her. They bond over similar past ordeals and Calla finds that the more time she spends with Dare, the more she feels free from all of her worries. It’s clear, however, that Dare is hiding some pretty important things from her and she from him, so as much as they come to like and love each other, there is an unspoken agreement to avoid confrontation about their secrets. But the truth can’t be hidden forever and soon enough, both of their pasts – especially Calla’s – catches up with them and when it is revealed, it is absolutely shocking and devastating to both the main characters and everyone around them. Nevertheless, it doesn’t change Calla and Dare’s relationship a bit; if anything, their rocky relationship only motivates them more into making things work.Up until the big twist, I was a little bored with the book in terms of not really knowing what direction the story was going in. It’s written in alternate Finn and Calla POVs, and many of the Calla scenes bored me with mundane descriptions of daily life activities. Finn’s POVs, however, really captivated me with his dark, edgy ferocity, and the author really captured his sick mental health and channeled it into his POV, projecting a very unstable individual who’s both fascinating and frightening. So when that big reveal came, I was shocked speechless. I finished the book in a daze and sat in my chair for half an hour staring at nothing and contemplating everything I read. Books like these where the enjoyment level is mainly contingent on one huge turning point in the book I’m always wary of reviewing because I may let the shock override my true feelings. I’ve let the shock wear off and I have to say that while the actual twist itself is original, imaginative, and unique in the context of this book, the fallout is huge and the wake left behind presented several plot holes that made me scratch my head. Sorry, not going to say my actual complaints here but if you want to know comment and we can discuss. Voicing my complaints would spoil the big twist. This is the main reason why I can’t give 5 stars because I am a very logical, factual reader and even if I get emotionally overwhelmed and let my feelings dictate my review, the facts also must align in order for me to give a high rating.I think it’s no secret that the ending is a cliffhanger, and might I add it is one MASSIVE cliffy that has the power to cripple you, force you on your knees and beg the author to release the next book at once. However, I knew it was this kind of ending and still decided to read it because I was just SO curious about the book, you know? And so even though I wished the book didn’t end the way it did here, even though I admit it would’ve made me heart feel a lot better if I read this when at least book 2 released, I don’t regret reading this book one bit. In my opinion, the shock, agony, and pure torture of not having the next book available is worth experiencing.Nocte is the first book in the Nocte trilogy and not a standalone. The story will continue on in book 2 Verum which will be released in February.

When I finally sat down to write this review, I kept thinking back to the letter Courtney Cole wrote to her readers, a "warning" of what to expect in Nocte.

Is this story dark? Yes, she said.

I say...Eerie. Chilling. Instantly foreboding. Courtney Cole's words had the power to make the real world fade away and easily transport me to Nocte's version of Astoria, Oregon. Gray. Somber. Where waves break on menacing cliffs. Where a strange house stands isolated at the end of a winding, coastal road. The imagery often gave the novel a mystical, dream-like feel, then it would turn downright disturbing and spooky in a quick second. A gothic-like touch I wasn't expecting, but was fascinated by.

Is it twisted? At times, she admitted.

The two narrators in this novel, twins Calla and Finn, captured my attention immediately. Their world has been fractured by tragedy, by death. They are two voices portraying that emotional struggle, two sides of the same troubled coin. The way this author was able to bring that inner torment to life--the psychological twists--was incredibly riveting. What spilled out from certain chapters was darkly poetic. Ominous. And I never wanted to put this book down! The writing pulled me in completely and consumed me!

Will it have you flipping the pages, trying to figure it out, trying to get to the climax, trying to breathe?

God I hope so, Courtney Cole confessed.

Yes. All of the above, yes. Suspicion festers from page one, and it doesn't go away. I was anxious while reading! Nocte was cryptic--so, so cryptic--and I loved how the author built up the anticipation, then carried that tension through every reveal, one after the other, methodically. Because things have to happen in order...With books like these, you can give yourself a headache trying to connect all of the dots, but Nocte had such a rhythm to it! Yes, it messed with my head. Yes, it made me constantly brace myself and wonder WHAT is going to happen next. But also, that tight grip on my heart and my mind would release at just the right moments, only to surprise and grip me all over again a few page turns later. It all came together with a beautiful flow and pulse!

This was such an enthralling read! Tangled in the mystery and darkness surrounding Calla and Finn, there's also a tale of young, can't-resist-this love. Dare DuBray is a character in the story that Calla can relate to, someone to lean on. A seemingly ideal "escape" from her problems. Dare is a very thoughtful and enlightening character. Every scene or conversation was intriguing. The chemistry between Dare and Calla sparked instantly, but the relationship began as a slow burn. You could practically feel that current of electricity humming from the pages, the burn building. It was so hypnotic! He was something different and unexpected in Calla's life, but by the end of the book, you will realize that not all things are exactly as they seem...

Will it slap you in the face?

    Absolutely, the author declared.

It's like fire finding more oxygen to spread. It escalates until chaos erupts. The flame--while fascinating--is ultimately destructive. The writing was so evocative and so compelling throughout. There was even a moment when I actually flinched while reading. The truth? The secret we were teased with from the beginning? Wow. It turned my heart and my head upside down. I was stunned speechless by how Courtney Cole pulled it off flawlessly. That's what this book does to you. It happens to you. The emotions. The environment. The actions. You're experiencing everything.

After all of the hype and buildup, there needed to be a spectacular bomb that finally goes off, and this author did not disappoint! The revelation is explosive. Shocking and heartbreaking, yet fulfilling, making so many pieces of the story come full circle. It's also an ending that left me begging for more! Since this is the first book in the trilogy, there is a cliffhanger, but I loved how it wrapped up one storyline and set up the next one perfectly. (Those last lines!!!) Book two, Verum, can't get here fast enough!!!

This was outstanding storytelling, from cover to cover. Perfect setting. Captivating characters. Distinct voice. A romance as enticing as the mystery. All of the things I love about suspense were well-executed--the anticipation, the mind-blowing feeling after it's all said and done. When I finished that last page, I was shaking my head, awestruck. Then, I couldn't sit still for hours. I had been on edge, so wrapped up in Nocte's pages, that winding down was not an easy thing to do! I wanted to go back and read this again immediately, and I've only said that about a limited handful of books! This is on my Best Reads of 2014 list. No question. Nocte is a hauntingly atmospheric and cunningly crafted tale, a highly engrossing read from start to finish!

Così l'autrice ci accoglie all'inizio del libro.

    F I N N
He's crazy.

F*****iNonPuoiFareNiente. FeriscimiFiglioDiP*****a. NonPuoiFareNiente. SeiCosìF*****o. Feriscimi. Feriscimi. Feriscila. NonPossoFareNiente. UccidimiAdesso.

Uccidila f*****a femminuccia uccidila adesso. Spingila giù dalle scogliere. Lecca le sue ossa. Lecca le sue ossa. Lecca le sue ossa.
    NonPuoiNonPuoiNonPuoiNonPuoi. Sei pazzopazzopazzopazzo. NonDirleIlTuoSegretoSegreto.

È a ogni angolo, a ogni virgola.

    E allora fallo.

Ma c'è una cosa che non vi ho detto.
C'è qualcuno che non ho citato.
    Perché tutto inizia
    e finisce
    con lui.

I just finished this book last night and WOW. If you can look past some incorrect use of words, this is a must read. I have never had a book affect me the way this one did. It's difficult to explain this book without giving away the ending but it is different than any book I have read. I'm hesitant to read the second only because it will be awhile before book 3 is out. The four star rating (tried to do 4.5) is for the obvious editing errors.

This book has given me more feeling than any I’ve read in a long time. I loved everything about it! The writing, the plot, the plot twist. Amazing.

Portraying the story of Calla – who calls herself “one half of a whole” due to being a twin – Nocte is a fast-past, engaging story about love, loss, and the ultimate lengths our subconscious will go to to save us.

The first thing I noticed about this novel is the beautiful writing. Each moment is written uniquely in stunning detail, submersing you into this world after the first paragraph. I was hooked after the first page, and couldn’t stop reading after that, simply because of how captivating the writing was.

Personally, I love creative writing like Courtney Cole’s, because it helps to paint such a vivid picture in my mind, much more so than simplistic descriptions can. Furthermore, Cole was consistent with the beauty of her writing, not simply interjecting special moments where she saw it fit, but constantly writing in this style. This really interested me, and ensured I wanted to keep reading, explaining as to why I couldn’t put this book down!

As well as this, the plot for Nocte is very original (from what I’ve experienced, anyway). Frankly, I’ve never seen anything like it! I highly recommend you listen to the synopsis – “A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming. You won’t either.” – because I really didn’t, and I’m usually good at predicting endings! Cole was extremely clever when crafting this novel, for – once I knew the secret – everything feel into place, and a previously confusing book was brought into a beaming light of clarity. Looking back, I can shuffle the pieces back together, yes, but I’m definitely not surprised I didn’t predict it.

Another great thing about this book is the fact that it addresses mental illness. I find it very difficult to find books that discuss this theme well, but Cole definitely succeeded with Nocte.

In terms of characters, I found Calla very likeable. Reading from her perspective was really interesting – because not everything made sense – but also really nice, because I felt like I could relate to her a lot. Her development was also really great.

Dare was a little cliché, but he suited the story perfectly. He is so good to Calla, and it’s great to read about a relationship wherein the guy wants to take it slow, not the girl.

Finn was probably the best character, in my opinion, in terms of development, and general character building. At first, I found him quite loveable, and felt for him with his mental health status. However, this soon progressed into chilling moments from Finn, and he – by the latter half – really began to scare me.

This book is told primarily from the perspective of Calla, with a few interjections from Finn every few chapters. Finn’s chapters were always really short, but so captivating at the same time, for they were coming from an unreliable mind. Cole did really well to portray this, because it felt extremely real to me, and made me feel so many different emotions.

Overall, this book is beguilingly dark and a real page turner, captivating me from page one, and not even releasing me at the last page. (I’m starting book 2 tonight!)

I highly recommend this book to everyone looking for a unique page-turner that is deliciously dark and thrilling. 5/5 stars.

Finale esplosivo e commovente. Trama geniale.
