- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2014I've leapt between musical genres for years, hyperactively switching CD's in my car once I've been satiated by a hook or chorus. tUnE-yArDs (and "nikki nack") occupies a strange place in my library; it self-shuffles this impulse without irritation. Most reviews include metaphors and comparisons to describe what would appeal to others (and what drew themselves into the song). But this is rough-around-the-edges on purpose, posturing its' own style while appreciating its' origins. I suppose the challenge for the listener is avoiding the familiarity and fondness for what you love about music in this album.
There are gifts in these songs neatly folded in the arrangements. Good music makes you appreciate the craft and the discipline needed to make music. Merrill Garbus is making great music right now, linking our love of popular music into the manic world of today. Rhythm and melody clash and fly by during the most upbeat tracks ("Hey Life", "Left Behind", "Water Fountain"), while familiarity oozes into the songs "Real Thing" and "Wait For A Minute". There is an appreciation of the nonsensical, the whimsy of singalong, the depth of glossolalia pulling you into a track like "Rocking Chair".
Some years ago, I heard an album that made me feel this same sense of nostalgia. "Idiology" by Mouse On Mars is my personal parallel for this album; it is more than a carefully crafted electronic album (with mostly instrumentals). But when vocals are used by that group, they are distorted, processed, into melodic tools that propel the listener into a very specific state. Does it take patience or focus to enjoy this kind of music? Absolutely not. "nikki nack" occupies the same space that most good music lives within--it will be one of the best albums of this year, and will likely stay in my regular rotation. Be challenged.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2016Merrill Garbus, dr, voc, keys, uke; Nate Brenner, b, synth, voc; others, incl. the a capella group, Roomful of Teeth.
Merrill Garbus, of the hip hop/clubbing music group tUnE-yArDs, is the most exciting pop vocalist to come along since St. Vincent’s 2007 debut album, Marry Me. tUnE-yArDs may function as a co-op but Garbus is clearly its driving force, writing or improvising as she goes the lyrics of their eminently danceable tunes and singing, doubling on drums or drumsticks, ukulele, whatever, and creating sound loops from them as she goes to add to the musical mix. She probably writes or co-writes the music as well –it’s impossible to tell from the liner notes, which don’t supply credits for composer and lyricist. A typical song starts with drum or electric bass beat, then the drums are doubled back electronically and other beats layered over them, then Garbus’s voice enters, singing fast and fluently, sometimes like rap or hip hop, at others jazzlike – Garbus’s clear, strong vibrato-less voice could just as well be scatting, she is so fluid and sure. The musicians that support her are strong too and the result is an infectious brew that should please anyone who remembers how much fun it was at times being young, alive and active. All it takes to listen to the group is a touch of adventure in your soul.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2014One of my friends posted a video clip on his page; and I immediately ordered the CD. What a blast "Nikki-Nack" is! It's so unlike most music being put out. It sounds a bit like some of the things Blue Man Group was doing with drums and splashing neon paints about, very tribal feeling. While nothing is poor on the set, two tracks have captured my attention. "Water Fountain" rocks relentlessly backed by a great bass line, "I saved up all my pennies & I gave them to this special guy; When he had enough of them, he bought himself a cherry pie; He gave me a dollar, a blood-soaked dollar; I cannot get the spot out." "Real Thing" is another rollicking track that grabs you and will not let go with lead vocals that bring you in and harmonies that counterpoint, "Water if water is wet; Don't have a penny, I look good in debt, red white blue course through my veins, binge and purge the USA." Tune-Yards' sense of humor comes through on "Why Do We Dine on the Tots?" More than anything, this set is fun! Enjoy!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2014I liked "Whokill", the last Tune-yards album; there were a few songs that I loved ("Gansta", "Bizness", "My Country"--how can you not love a song that ends with the line, "The worst thing about living a lie is just wondering when you'll be found out"?) but I didn't play the whole thing an awful lot.
Then I saw her live, and my head was rearranged. I'm a middle-aged music lover who's been going to shows for the better part of 40 years and not to be jaded but I've seen a lot. Tune-yards live was one of the best shows I'd seen in a long while--witty, clever, engaging, inspiring, and just a lot of fun. Merrill Garbus has some mad layering skills.
So I was pretty excited for this album, and it does not disappoint. It's a little funkier than "Whokill" and I find I listen to it more. Ideas ricochet back and forth though the songs are (slightly) more structured than in the past. It's still kind of all over the place but if you give it a few listens, its logic starts to unfold. References that come to mind include playground chants, Laurie Anderson, the B-52's, Solange, Tom Tom Club, Micachu & the Shapes, Chicks on Speed, and Haitian drumming (which Merrill has studied).
Easily among my preferred albums of 2014.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its a challenge not to dance to this
I had heard some of the tracks on radio 6. When played loud you won't be able to stop yourself from dancing.
