Review
"THE NIGHTLIFE: NEW YORK is chocked full of naughty characters and I mean naughty in every sense of the word - dirty cops and pimps who need to be taught a lesson, along with strippers, hookers and pimps and let us not forget the VAMPIRES!" ~ Bookie Nookie - TheRomanceReviews.com
"Has restored my faith in the PNR (Paranormal Romance) Vampire...Luedke's style is an easy-going eloquence...five stars to Nightlife: New York for giving me a good time without being campy...a multi-layered, atypical romance." ~ C.E. Kilgore - Author of the Corwint Central Agent Files Space Opera/Science Fiction Romance
"The Nightlife New York is a raw brutal tale that slaps you in the face and keeps you asking for more! Travis Luedke has taken a genre flooded with angsty teenagers to an adult level." ~ teenblurb.com - "Young Adult, New Adult, and Adult Book Reviews"
"Nightlife: New York is a paranormal romance unlike I've ever read and it took me a little while to pinpoint why. Surprisingly, I think it is the fact that it was written by a man. It changed the feel and focus of the romance. There was a realism to the main character, Aaron's, thoughts and actions that I can only imagine was born of the male author's innate ability to relate to the emotions of a male character." ~ Sadie Forsythe - sadieforsythe.com
From the Author
A few notes on The Nightlife:
This story begins with Aaron, a simple man in the wrong place at the wrong time... or maybe it was the right place. Forever changed, Aaron is plunged into the dangerous and sensual underworld of vampire nightlife, struggling to adapt to a rigid set of rules and answer to his seductive femme fatale vampire master, Michelle.
The series spans from city to city, following Aaron and Michelle's struggle to survive the corruption of pimps, exotic dancers, escorts, mafia, cartel, vampires, werewolves, fallen angels, and all those creatures who go bump in the night.
Enjoy this wicked, decadent world tour, but be warned: The Nightlife is sexy, violent, and occasionally violently sexy.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2013Although I dabble occasionally in the Paranormal Romance genre, I steer clear of the whole wolf/shifter/vamp phase that the genre has been going through lately (Thanks, Sookie. Really...). I haven't read a Vampire story-line centered book since they all started featuring pouty-faced, cover-model, broody Vamps that lament about their lost humanity and sparkle in the sunlight. (Seriously, sparkles? It is the single most important reason you will never find Twilight on my reading shelf. Ever.) No, I believe that the last true Vampire book that I read where the Vampire was actually a Vampire, and not some underwear model that drinks his non-fat blood latte from a bottle, was Queen of the Damned (and don't you dare bring up that movie that we all pretend was never made.) My favorite Vampire-centric book is The Vampire Lestat, back when a Vampire was a sadistic S.o.B. who reveled in his own glorious existence, saw the world as a steak-house and never whined into his blood-stained hands about how he wished he were not a monster.
So, it's safe to say that I had pretty much given up on the genre as more and more books appeared that only compounded my belief that the genre, as I had known and loved it, had died. I was challenged to read Nightlife: New York by two people. I hrmed and hawed and finally gave in, ready to give Luedke a run through the iron gauntlet that is a C.E. Kilgore review. I do not toss around Five-stared necklaces frivolously like a drag-queen in Mardi Gras. (I love you gals so, so much)
Luedke starts by introducing the male protagonist, Aaron, your everyday young-twenties man working as a waiter, numbly living through the routine of his life. The first chapter gives the reader a good feel for Aaron's character, and it was easy to connect with his pretty typical sounding life. He wasn't drop-dead gorgeous or anything uber-special. He was just a guy who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time (or right place, depending on your perspective.)
I'll make a quick note on style here. Luedke's style is an easy-going eloquence. No big words that made me reach for the dictionary, but it's not dumbed down to tap-water, either. It's relaxed enough to accommodate the rather fast pace of the novel, but it still allows the reader to get comfortable inside the lives, thoughts and actions of each of the characters. There were a few times where I felt there was a slight language barrier where I wish I spoke French and Puerto Rican, as Luedke seamlessly inserts the character's native languages into the dialogue. Translations are provided in the form of thoughts or asides, and the languages do aid in character authenticity; still, I wish i had paid more attention to French when I lived in Canada. I probably would have enjoyed Michelle's character that much more.
Michelle is the main female character, a Vampire with a French accent who is a drop-dead bombshell. I do kind of wish that Luedke had perhaps gone on a further limb away from the PNR circuit and made her not quite so attractive, but much of her attractiveness is explained with the inherent Vamperic magnetism, which is an accepted piece of Vamp lore, so I let it slide. Plus, Michelle was a lot of fun.
Fun. Yes, I think fun is one of many apt words for describing Nightlife: New York. Though not as dark as I would have liked (I really like my Vampire fiction a bit heavy and violent), the story, pace, dialogue, erotically heated intimacy and following Aaron as he acclimated to his new Nightlife was a really good time. That's all I ask for, really, in a book. Give me a really good, enjoyable time with a few new/fresh angles and I'll be a happy reader.
So, five stars to Nightlife: New York for giving me a good time without being campy, giving me Vampires that aren't apologizing for being Vampires (or sparkling), and a multi-layered, erotic atypical romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2013The Nightlife New York by Travis Luedke
Aaron left work to buy beer and head home to a party already in progress that included his ex-girlfriend, Delia, as well as his roommate, Kyle. On his way, he saw a vision of almost unimaginable beauty. He watched, stunned, as she was attacked by police officers attempting to charge her with prostitution.
As she shouted at them in French, Aaron rushed to her aid. Before reaching her side, the lovely blonde had freed herself from their grasp, and actually used one of their own tasers on them. Even as Aaron watched, one of the officers managed to free his gun; when the beauty tasered him, he accidentally fired the weapon. The bullet went wild, hitting Aaron in the chest. He hit the sidewalk, bleeding profusely.
Michelle, the blonde beauty, had noticed the handsome young man approaching. She read his aura, admiring his purity of nature. After the brief fight, she felt severe guilt over Aaron's pain. She saw him rushing to her assistance and she wanted to help him. However, she knew that the only chance he had to live would be for her to bind him to her. It was something that would require his permission. She had vowed never to do such a thing and now that she felt she must, she was not going to do so against his will.
She snatched Aaron's bleeding body from the sidewalk and ran with him to her apartment. There, she licked his wound clean and verified to her dismay that there was only one way to save him. She asked Aaron if he was sure he wanted to live and live only for the nightlife, understanding that he would be bound to her. For this creature of immense loveliness, such a binding and living for the nightlife seemed perfectly fine to Aaron. And so it began.
Travis Luedke has set the stage for a thrilling series. This is a very fast and adventuresome read. Luedke has established several plot twists and turns and left hints for the reader of evil things to come. The sensuous scenes are enthralling; Luedke certainly makes being a vampire extremely sexy. The characters are beginning to grow, getting more shape with each page. I am ready to download the next in the series to get my fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sizzling vampire erotica at it's best
It's a month since I read this so a review is long overdue. I really really liked this story from the start. At once you can't help feeling for the protagonist, Aaron, and the circumstances of his life, being used as a doormat by all who know him; his flatmate, his girlfriend, his employer and even the customers at the restaurant where he works. Aaron seems not too affected by it and ambles along, but ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time and is shot fatally by a crooked cop.
Fortunately, or unfortunately as the case may be, the one the bullet was meant for was a beautiful vampire, mistaken by the detectives as a hooker. She does the only thing she can to save Aaron's life and gives him her blood... and the story begins.
I enjoyed very much Aaron's transition from mere mortal to vampire, though not immortal, and the process of discovering who and what he has become. The interaction with Michelle is good, though I don't find her as likeable as Aaron. Their interaction and their story is interesting, and the sex between them okay. Where this story really excelled was when Michelle took him out to teach him how to feed and get what they need from humans, though without harming them.
The first time Aaron tastes human blood is one of the most incredibly erotic scenes I've ever read, or possibly ever will read. It was intense, exciting and made me wish I had written it. I found all the occasions where Aaron interacted with humans to be the high points of this story, and his relationship with Michelle to be secondary - although it develops nicely as the story progresses and it is left in just the right place for the second book to take it on further.
I was surprised by the lack of violence for a vampire novel, but this perhaps gave the violence more of a punch when it did come. It is definitely a more erotic piece of work, than a bloodthirsty violent one, and there is no fault with that. Indeed there is nothing about this story to find fault with. It is a very enjoyable read, and the best vampire story I have read in a very long time. I would recommend it to anyone, a definite 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing Vampire story
Generally I don't like too much Vampire stories. This time I really appreciated it. I started reading it in Bordeaux (where Michelle Brown the main character is coming from) and finishing it when I was in the train to Transylvania (where as you know Vampire have a lot of to do). It was full moon when I entered the mountains of Transylvania, coming from Hungary. So, I entered fully the book and its characters! It is well written and you cannot leave it before going to the end! Waiting for the next one happening in Las Vegas! I hope there will be one in Bordeaux, as Michelle was born in the Medoc area, very close to here!

4.0 out of 5 stars Slick, violent and sexy
Aaron Pilan is the average dumb schmuck living hand to mouth in grubby New York City, when he breaks the first rule of dealing with women, ie., the more beautiful she is, the more trouble she's likely to be. A botched rescue attempt ends with a bullet in his chest, and he wakes in the stunning vampire's arms, wondering what the hell she did to him.
What follows is an orgiastic blood-fest set amongst the night clubs of Manhattan, with corrupt cops on their tail and more willing victims than he can count desperate for Aaron's newfound ability to feed from beautiful girls and give multiple orgasms just by sucking their blood.
It all sounds ridiculous, and of course it is, but Luedke carries it off with such conviction, such great writing and vivid descriptions, that even the most ardent vampire hater will find themselves getting hot under the collar as the two beautiful people chomp their way through the city's glamorous crowd.
There are some faults, the main one being the tendancy to swap points of view mid-paragraph. This is a rookie error, but because the writing is so good, the see-sawing between characters actually seems to work. There are a dizzying amount of emotions to convey, and trying to write them one at a time could well interrupt the flow of the story, especially when Aaron and Michelle, together with any number of other willing victims, get it on. The sex is sensual, although the constant, immediate orgasms did get rather exhausting. It's difficult to criticise it for being unbelievable; it's a fantasy after all, but as a woman I would have appreciated a more delicate touch at times. And as an erotica writer, there is a lot I could pick holes in but I won't because the whole package is so incredibly and competently sexy. The world of the vampire and bloodslaves is told with total conviction, so much so that I almost wanted them to exist. If you love vampires, sex, glamour and the feeling of being totally out of control, you will love this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vampire events
Vampire fans, and there seems to be a lot of them, will probably enjoy this. Unfortunately I read this in tandem with Sebastian Faulks' 'Human Traces', which I also found a little uneven, but 'Nightlife' definitely dimmed strongly in writing quality comparison, which is why in all conscience I couldn't give it more than 3 stars.
I have no trouble with the sex scenes, it is after all an erotic fantasy, but it felt a touch like a martial arts film or a porn movie where the story has more to do with linking obligatory and regular punch-ups or love-ins than following the development of character, resolution of conflict, unravelling of a mystery or whatever the main story line is. This didn't actually seem to have a page-turning story. It established a vampiric situation between the two main characters well enough, played around with that, but at base little had altered between them. This may be one of a long series but I felt it didn't have a satisfying plot that could stand alone and I believe that is imperative to avoid mere repetition regarding the relationship of the two main characters.
It has a lot of five star reviews so you're probably better off trying it yourself because the author describes the individual episodes very well, but to my mind the overall shape was just that - episodic.
Now and again the word choice was imprecise. For example, "tenuous relationship they had". One thing Michelle and Aaron did not have was that: they are firmly bound together for life.
Also in the first couple of pages we have a vampire, who considers people "like cattle. We feed from them", making the moral judgement: "what was wrong with the world today, authority figures seeking out the seemingly weak for predatory purposes". "Sick desires" that filled her "with disgust and loathing". Even in this fantasy world consistency must rule.
I guess 'conductive' was a typo for 'conducive' and in general the level of proof editing was good.
I also thought there was nothing distinctively New York about this night life. It could have been any major western city where cops are armed. The Vegas follow up should be easier to add the individual city touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gimme More!
The Nightlife: New York (The Nightlife, #1) by Travis Luedke kicks of one of the best vampire series, okay the best vampire series this reader has devoured. There are lashings of gore and sex, violence and sex and sex and gore and sex and violence and yet it all rolled off my proverbial tongue like butter melting in my mouth. It's not that I am indifferent to sex and blood, it's because I am a vampire, well wannabe one anyway. Can you imagine what life as a vampire would actually mean - well read this awesome book and you will know what it is to be a vampire.
Michelle is a sexy vampire who is accosted by two very crooked cops. Aaron is a young waiter who sees the woman of all desires in some serious trouble and intervenes. Only to get shot instead of her. Michelle has no choice but to make aaron her blood slave or he would die.
Aaron's life changes from meek guy to a blood-thirsty monster who needs a leash from Michelle. He doesn't like thinking of himself as a servant to her dominatrix master but that's exactly what he will be from now on. The sex is equally as brutal as the violence and written with a film noir no nonsense way that this reader found thrilling.
The author did a great job of revealing character issues through vivd visuals that left nothing to the imagination and everything was visceral and messy. Cool!
This reader has all the sequels in this awesome series and can say without contradiction this author is going places. This is one of those novels to read in the last two hours you have before a real vampire turns you. Lights out! Very highly recommended.
